I cant think of anything physical "i" related removed under Cook unless iPods count, and that was a long time coming...

iBooks vanished with the switch to intel under Jobs

iPods led to and were basically replaced by iPhones, and while iPods no longer exist the iPhone does, continuing the lineage.

iMacs still exist.

iSight as a standalone product ended in '08 under jobs and the term's usage petered out over time, and also under Jobs. I think technically the name for iPhone's rear cameras is still referred to as iSight though FWIW, not that it changes anything to this point either way

As for software:
iOS is still called iOS.

iCloud still exists

iMessage still exists

iMovie still exists

Technically iTunes still exists (on windows).

iWork still exists

I guess if someone wants to winge about iTunes becoming Music and co and iPhoto --> Photos etc in MacOS, sure, they could go for it, it's not really a big deal though
Well notice that I said “introduced“ as in Tim Cook has never released a new product or service that starts with the letter i, but obviously existing ones still exist. All those things you listed were introduced during the Steve Jobs era. And I’m not complaining or anything, I’m just pointing out a fact, Tim Cook prefers to start names with the word “Apple” and I think that’s fine and makes sense.

Less than two hours after Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said a MacBook with either an 18.8-inch or 20.2-inch foldable screen would launch in 2026, display industry expert Ross Young has said the device will indeed feature around an 18.8-inch screen.

A foldable-screen MacBook concept by Astropad

In a post on social media platform X, limited to his paying subscribers, Young said he expects the device to be equipped with an 18.76-inch display instead of a 20.25-inch display for "cost reasons." In a folded position, Kuo said an 18.8-inch MacBook would be similar in size to a traditional 13-inch or 14-inch MacBook.

It is expected that a MacBook with a foldable screen would feature an all-screen design with a virtual keyboard, but exact design details have yet to be rumored.

Kuo said Apple is aiming to make the foldable screen "as crease-free as possible," and he said this could result in the device being nearly as expensive as Apple's Vision Pro headset, which starts at $3,499. He also said the foldable-screen MacBook will be equipped with Apple's next-generation M5 chip, which has yet to be announced.

It seems like a foldable-screen MacBook is still a few years away, and Apple will firm up its plans for the device as its launch gets closer.

*Steve Jobs has left the chat*
Interesting...

I trust that Apple can find a way. Much in the same way that we all laughed when iPhone first came out with virtual keyboard. All the Blackberry owners said it would never work, and yet here we are in a world where almost no phones have a physical keyboard.

And... of course it will be expensive!

I still curse at the iPhone to this day when I type words it replaces with nonsense or misreads as a tap on the letter to the left or right. I do not want this on a machine I use to do a job.

You must be using it wrong. :p

How on earth are they going to pull this off under their current "Make Everything Thin" motto?

Apple in 2021: Touch screens on laptops are for losers.
Apple in 2026: We will give you nothing but the touch screen.

Providing that all of this comes to pass, one wonders... I mean it could be an interesting niche, but I am guessing that touch screens would need to come to other Macs too? I guess we'll see what happens...

Give me something like the Asus Zenbook Fold or Thinkpad X1 Fold. Having it fold with space for the keyboard, instead of with both sides touching, would probably solve the crease issues. Additional tricks like letting the sides f the screen move in the case when folding would also help.

this is stupid. and unnecessary.
Is it? I'm imagining using this with the fold when, for example, traveling by air, then unfolding it to use an 18+" screen with an external keyboard once I arrive at my destination. Seems like a potentially very powerful setup for my work.

A MacBook has to have a physical keyboard because that's probably why most people buy it. Onscreen keyboard typing sucks for anything more than several sentences.

The folding screen in the picture will certainly be a folding iPad.

Just being "something different" but not having a killer App or obviously great use case or problem being solved IS a legitimate problem.

That's not people unfairly complaining
Those folks are correct
I hear ya, my point was more to the fact that there's a ton of negativity here. The product is only a rumor of course, and Apple would certainly have some use cases in mind if it came to fruition. Otherwise the keynote would be a disaster. While this product would open up usage of Apple Pencil directly, it doesn't solve a problem that a Mac with iPad/Wacom/etc doesn't solve already.

If this product were a reality, I'd personally be interested in:
  • Clean smooth surface, rather than a filthy keyboard (that will power Mx computers on when trying to clean, without separate software)
  • Better dust/liquid ingress protection by removing keyboard
  • Dynamic keyboard, displaying hotkeys for software you want to learn
  • Dynamic keyboard, displaying anything you want
Would it be something for early-adopters and enthusiasts? Certainly. You could say the same about AVP. Plenty of users are happy with their AVP. However, after a demo, I personally don't see a killer app, obviously great use case, or problem being solved. It doesn't make me anymore correct than the users who do see such things, just thinking differently.

The killer app is an ~19” screen which fits in your bag like a 14” laptop. The use case is a big screen for creators.

First the headphone jack, now the keyboard. Next they’ll summon the courage to take away the screen.

Prob will still fold tho.

They'll take away the brains of the thing and have it remotely operating from the cloud too...

The device that nobody wants. Foldable screens are more acceptable and make more sense on iPads and iPhones.

Apple really is heading for a downward spiral. Its the Newton all over again.
