Okay, so maybe you can help me understand. Everything that I can find online (and the RipIt website is about the least informative of any online resources) seems to say that RipIt only rips into ".dvdmedia" file format. In other words, RipIt only works with the DVD Player app, not, as the above tagline suggests, iTunes, iPod or :apple:TV. Even the RipIt site doesn't say anything about playing the movies on anything other than your computer, and the screenshot shows the ".dvdmedia" extension.

So, beyond the fact that the user interface is very, very simple, what is the advantage of RipIt over a free app like HandBrake that has easy to use presets for just about every type of use you could want?

Actually, there is now an option under Preferences to "Use '.dvdmedia' Extension". If you uncheck this option, RipIt saves the DVD as a Video_TS folder. Also, there is a new Beta option for compression when the DVD is first inserted. This will allow you to copy a compressed version of the DVD, and it includes presets (in Preferences) for High Quality MP4, Apple TV, and iPhone/iPod Touch; however, you must download these components separately. You will be prompted to download these components when you select the Compression option.

IMO, this is the easiest, most straightforward, but plain-Jane way to rip DVDs on the Mac if all you want is an exact duplicate. I also have Slysoft HD DVD, but that is Windows only.

i don't know if this is appropriate to ask, but, i already have a license for rapidweaver and ripit.

if it is allowed, i would love to sell it to somebody who would need it. PM me.

if it is not a good idea, i would love to hear from a MOD and i would edit my post appropriately.

thanks.

I've never really liked macheist. In most cases, these little apps are not really that useful in my experience. For the one or two useful apps, I prefer to purchase directly from the source rather than from the macheist marketing machine. In the past I have noticed the apps are usually 'updated' with a non-free, major revision shortly after the macheist scheme ends.

Great, then don't participate
The rest of us are happy with our purchase :)

Yes the latest version does not really need Handbreak any more, just got the update, love it. Now if they only made one for Windows 7 because the Windows ones tend to really suck and are really flaky. :(

What's wrong with Slysoft AnyDVD HD?

PS--I run XP SP3. Isn't it compatible with Win 7?

I would KILL for 20$ right now, I really want Tweetie in all honesty. I just don't have it ;( Why could this have happened in like a month *grumbles* Gotta keep using twitterific and tweetdeck ;(

Not to mention Monkey Island would have been cool and monkey solitaire.

ok so use rip it to get the movie and download it, then use handbreak to compress it making it the same size files that you'd down load off itunes?

But it seems from two earlier posts that RIP-IT will not only RIP it to the HD BUT will ALSO COMPRESS the files? Anyone have experience doing both with Rip-it?

My needs are as follows:
• get some DVD movies and DVD TV shows onto my wife's iPod Touch
• ease of ripping and compressing to use in iTunes for putting on a iPod Touch is key!!!

I'm getting my MBP back thursday how does this work does it download right then and there or can you go back and download at anytime want to buy it but not sure about the whole download process can anybody help?

Clips seems to be less than ready for prime time

looks like a good app, but has issues with memory leaks (some reporting 1GB usage) and abbreviations not working. caveat empor

Don't take this as gospel, because the rules might be different from what I'm saying here, but here is my experience with this in the past. I tried to buy two separate individual apps (from separate people) in the past and couldn't get either to work. Here's why:

  1. You either need to sell them before you buy them so that you can "gift" the apps to someone during the purchasing process. This violates the MR rule that you must actually already own what you are selling.
  2. You can't, or at least there doesn't appear to be any way to, gift the apps after you've bought it. On my bundle page, it lists my email address and name for all of the apps. I don't see anywhere I can change that. So, when I tried to buy an app from someone, I couldn't register the app in my name. I didn't want to pay for an app that was registered in someone else's name.

Again, perhaps the mod team might feel differently about selling the individual apps- it has happened in the past- but it didn't work out for me, and I can't see how it would work out according to the Marketplace rules.

But it seems from two earlier posts that RIP-IT will not only RIP it to the HD BUT will ALSO COMPRESS the files? Anyone have experience doing both with Rip-it?

Okay people seem to get two very different functions confused or worse think they are the same task...

DVD RIPPING - To move the contents of a DVD to the HD without any nasty protection that otherwise gums up the works. Except for the removal of the copy protection and possible macrovision removal the movie data (audio and video) is left all but UNMOLESTED... No loss of quality NOR file-size takes place.

RIPIT is an EXCELLENT program and the developer works quite hard at keeping up to date with the random and crazy protection schemes movie companies are utilizing in a ever loosing battle to prevent people from coping their DVD movies to their computer. To the best of my knowledge the develop has never entertained transcoding within ripit and I (as a long time customer) hope he never does. A DVD RIPPER needs to do one thing EXCEPTIONALLY well.. workaround all of the latest DVD protections and copy the otherwise untouched movie files to my HD. Trying to glue on a transcoder to the product would be a big mistake since it would siphon off the time spent working on the DVD RIPPING CODE for all of the THOUSANDS of requests that would come up on the transcoding feature.

TRANSCODING - To covert an movie (media file) from one format to another. In most (all?) cases this WILL cause a loss in video and audio quality however the file will take less CPU to play AND will be smaller. Often the QUALITY LOSS isn't missed since the device the file is intended to be played on has a much smaller screen size. Common uses include moving movies to an iPhone or iPod or PSP or any other handheld device.

HandBrake, despite what people insist on stating is NOT A DVD RIPPER if a DVD is WITHOUT PROTECTION then HandBrake will generally transcode the movie files without incident. With the use of 3rd party applications that do their best to remove DVD copy protection behind the scenes FAIRMOUT comes to mind HandBrake will then be able to work directly from a DVD to transcode a movie (provided FAIRMOUT can circumvent the protections on the DVD). In short HandBrake is a FANTASTIC product once you fully comprehend what it does.. and that is convert video files from one format to another but ALMOST ALWAYS with a price, usually a loss of movie quality in exchange for a less CPU intensive movie format and almost always a smaller file size..

You do know that there's a free version of Tweetie for the Mac, right?

ok I paid for the applications and have downloaded them. Thing is where can I locate the serials to unlock rapidweaver and monkey island the two I care about. The others are just great benefits, also this is the first macheist bundle I have bought so I'm not use to how it works. The receipt just provides a link to monkey island website.

I think what other people have said here though, is that in the RipIt preferences there's an option to have the video saved in .mp4 format.

Is that not the case?

You do know that there's a free version of Tweetie for the Mac, right?

Right, but when Tweetie 2 comes out (which will be soon), are they going to have a free version of that? I've tried all flavors of twitter clients and Tweetie beats them all IMO.. Great user interface and everything is easy to find and nice on the eyes. I just wish it supported newer twitter functionality. Can't wait till version 2.

in my lexicon, ripping is the process of transferring media content from a physical disc (i.e. a CD or DVD) to a digital data file. This is frequently accompanied by compression (i.e. while you can choose to rip a CD into a lossless file format, such as WAV, AIF or Apple Lossless, the vast majority of people rip their CDs into AAC or MP3). In a recent build of Handbrake, the dev team chose not to continue to try to fight the security systems that the movie studios keep coming up with, when there are simple backdoor ways of approaching the same problem. As a result, if you want to use Handbrake as a DVD ripper, the only requirement is that you have VLC (also free) installed on your system. With that, Handbrake acts perfectly well as a DVD ripper. The one thing that is true, however, is that it will transcode into a standard digital file format, and won't leave the movie as a VOB file. But, if you've got the disk space, you can set it to encode with 100% quality.

So, I still maintain that Handbrake is a ripper.

I'm not sure but I would assume that they'll have a free version of Tweetie 2 when it comes out. What I'm wondering is what happens if they don't get to 56789 bundles. Does that mean we won't get our Tweetie licenses? If so, what's the point? I really only bought the bundle because I like Tweetie and figured I could buy it and get a bunch of other apps for free in the process.
