Yeah, you can do that. Just make sure to run the post-install patch on the volume after you install. And yes, your WiFi card should work fine.
That's great to hear. So when I reach the post install menu, do I select Mac Pro 3,1 2008 or do I select the macbook 2010 that i use to update the drive as the boot volume?

KernkraftX360 bist du ein Deutscher ? was denkst du über mein Problem.. der dosdud1 schreibt, er versteht nicht was ich sage, frage mich nur warum nicht, das englisch ist doch gut übersetzt von Google Übersetzer.

+pkouame and +dosdude1,

I forgot to mention that I have a GTX750 with my Mac Pro 2008, and I don't have a boot screen EFI due to the fact that my card that came with the mac pro HD2600XT was burnt and spoilt. Any idea how do I upgrade the OS through USB update method proposed by +dosdude1? Will I be able to boot from the USB without EFI screen? Or should I remove my SSD from the Mac Pro 2008, update it using a macbook pro 2010, and then shift it back to the Mac Pro 2008? Would it work that way? Cheers.

Ouch! Yes , best to see your boot screens during this entire process...;)

options (no particular order)

- 1. Flash your card
- support and ROMs available here and on other forums like insanelymac.
- Hackintosh sites specialize in this.
- Will need a PC.
- May be complex if this is your first time
- search this forum for relevant threads and other support sites
- 2. Ship your card off to get flashed
- macvidcards.com may still offer this service.
- 3. Beg, borrow and steal
- Do you still have an old pcie graphics card laying around?
- can you borrow one?
- I still kept my old 8800gt.

I Never tried what you are proposing. Theoretically possible, since that's how external boot disks work...So you may be on your own if you do... Although there is at least one user here that succesfully Target Disk'ed their install from another pro (I think?)

Good luck.

Thought I'd share my experience with my MacBook 5,1 late 2008 aluminium which might help someone along the line. Did a fresh install (booting from USB made with Dosdude's util). After the install I used Dosdude's tool and selecting the Recovery partition patch option. On first boot track pad or keyboard didn't work.

I fixed this by rebooting from USB, running the tool, didn't select Recovery partition patch, and then ticked the Force cache rebuild. Trackpad, keyboard, wifi, and isight camera all seem to work.

I also got my MacPro 3,1 up and running, cheated and ran the install from my 2009 Mac Pro 4,1. Then ran the tool and all booted up fine on my 2008.

Thanks Dosdude1!
Yes, the Forced Cache Rebuild worked for me. Thank you raymanster. I'm back in on MBP 5,1 late 2008.

To everyone that offered and rendered help, I'd like to say thank you. And, dosdude, I'd like to extend my thank you for the use of your tools. Unfortunately, the incompatibility of the Macbook 5,2 trackpad while using Sierra isn't worth the aggravation it causes me. Add to that the fact that I use this little laptop in low-light conditions a lot, which makes it worse. I considered trying Sierra on my MacPro8,1, but honestly, what am I gaining? The use of Siri?

I also use a MacPro5,1, which I do have Sierra on, and other than a slight bump in OS speed, I don't need Sierra. So, I'm "un-watching" this thread, and cloning back to El Cap. Good luck to every one, and thanks again.

Yeah, things ran really well for me on Sierra, but I want to take a step back for a bit to see how well updating it works, etc. If for the next few updates they all go smoothly, (and I hope they do!) I may go back to 10.12

I have but can not install a loaded sierraupdate.pkg (1.21 GB).
it always comes the error message "there are missing components".

how can I now my Final Sierra 10.12 update to the beta 1?

Hahaha, I know, he must be asking himself "what did I get myself into?!" Haha

Yeah, I'm not going anywhere, not unsubscribing either! I'm still gonna read every message!

It's been too much fun to go anywhere! I love this kind of stuff! Kinda wish I had another Mac I could use as a guinea pig, haha I do have another Mac, but it's a G5 (power pc).

And if updates run smoothly I might be back on 10.12 soon..

Hi Guys!

Installed sierra on my Mac mini 3,1 (Early 2009) and installation was fine. However my WiFi card doesn't appears on the system even the card type is 0x14E4, 0x90. Reading the dosdude1 guide, I guess it should work.

Anyone have this issue? Is there a chance this card is unsupported? Thank you all for this amazing topic.

Can I take out the SSD from the mac pro, insert it to a macbook pro 2010, update it, and then put it back in the mac pro 2008? Also, do you know if my wifi card would work? Picture of the wifi card specs as attached.

Same Atheros card as I have. Yes it works fine with Sierra.
[doublepost=1474689111][/doublepost]I'm trying to troubleshoot a kernel panic. I did a clean install of Sierra that went well, but after I migrated my El Capitan User folder into Sierra, it panics really early in the boot cycle. I have a Mac Pro 4,1 (with 5,1 firmware)

If anyone sees anything that stands out in this panic report, I'd appreciate the help...

Make sure you use a stock copy of Sierra; you don't need the patch tool if you flashed to 5,1 firmware.

No, something went wrong with the automatic translation in your first post. It resulted in a German (!) text that made no sense whatsoever. That's weird, because translation worked properly in your subsequent posts. Am I correct in assuming your question is if your wifi card will be supported if you install sierra?

Just to note, the final Sierra catalogs for the AUS (Alternative Update Server; yes, I gave it a name) are in two branches:

http://swdist.furcode.co/index-10.1...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
10.12seed (Developer Previews) contain beta updates before they go out to users. Notably, this branch is usable by both Public Beta and Developer Preview builds, so there's little point to maintain the Public branch anymore (10.12beta) since it gets the same updates, but on a delay. 10.12.1 is already available in this branch.

http://swdist.furcode.co/index-10.1...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
10.12 is just standard updates in their final and regular schedule, and it is the same set of updates used in the production version of Sierra.

Both contain Application updates in general (iTunes, Safari) and new updates are on autopush, so the Mac App Store should be able to notify when they're available automatically.

I have a 2008 3,1 Mac Pro.
Using the patched installer I get to step 7 - I can format and click install.
Then it reboots after a while and I get the Prohibited Sign. Is this expected behaviour? Is this when I am to reboot to install the post-install patches?
(I want to double check first, because late last night I gave up and installed El Capitan, and it works fine).

Yes. You must now reboot with the same installer and post install.Follow the directions carefully.

Wow! This is great. The circle on Sierra is now COMPLETE, with a MAS like update for all our Apple patches and updates this year.

Can't thank you enough. Bravo.

Perfect.

Just got my first update: 10.12.1 Beta via standard Mac App Store (MAS) using @foxlet Sierra catalogs. Smooth as silk...

NOTE: And NO need to patch, it installs and reboots straight back into Sierra.

RESULTS:

video (Photo Booth) ok
microphone ok
wifi ok
kbd ok
bt ok
trackpad ok
screen ok
USB disk ok
restarts ok
cold reboots ok
HOW:

Code:

I have but can not install a loaded sierraupdate.pkg (1.21 GB).
it always comes the error message "there are missing components".

how can I now my Final Sierra 10.12 update to the beta 1?

Are you really certain that you want to and need to mess with the betas?

Considering how many problems we have all encountered with trying to successfully use Sierra on our unsupported machines, it might be wiser for you to wait for the official public updates, such as 10.12.1.

In short, you may be playing with fire if you decide to install every minor beta that comes along.

Of course, it is your choice. I am just offering a word of caution.

@Pinarek

I second that.
The betas target developers.
Caveat Emptor.
Your call of course.

Indeed. He has taken on a huge responsibility. So many unsupported Mac users are now counting on him, including myself. I am sure that sending a little donation his way will encourage him to remain hard to the task at hand. There is no better feeling than feeling love and appreciated. Ah, gee . . . now don't just feel all warm and fuzzy all over? :)

It's been too much fun to go anywhere! I love this kind of stuff! Kinda wish I had another Mac I could use as a guinea pig, haha I do have another Mac, but it's a G5 (power pc).

Well, if it is fun you are after, why don't you go in the opposite direction and install SheepShaver on your G5? Then you can take a blast into the past and play with OS 8 or OS 9.

As you may have noticed, I in fact have SheepShaver running under Sierra right now, and I have Mac OS 9.0.4 running in it. I use it to run my old Hermes II BBS from the early 1990s, as well as my old Hotline server from the late 1990s.

Awesome. As far as I can see all working on my new (to me) 2008 Mac Pro. I purchased this all of a week ago, and I'm pumped there is still a lively community around extending the life of these forever.

Now for some more RAM and then some faster CPUs.

Ah BBSses...the gold old days. This will date me (Ahem), I use to write assemblers for Apple 2 6502s (remember them), even met Jobs and Woz a few times when they were peddling their wares in the area...So a long history with Apple...

The "gold old days"? That's odd . . . I have never made any money from BBSing. Mine has always been free.

Yes, I know what you meant, but I just felt like ribbing you a bit. :p

Tim Cooke would go nuts if he truly realized how much we relish our old machines, and how much we don't want to give them up so easily. Why else would we be in this thread? :)

Sadly, I am on my last working iMac -- a 24" from early 2009 -- and then I will be forced to hand over a huge sum of money to that overly rich company. How will I even feed my fish after such a purchase? :p
