Unlocking with Apple Watch ("Auto Unlock") requires the support of the 802.11v feature "time of flight" which is only supported by the newer Broadcom Wifi cards, which also support 802.11AC.
The "rub" is that you won't get that feature working with a USB adapter - as these aren't seen by MacOS as native network adapters. You need to have an internal NIC that supports the feature for it to work.
For Continuity / Handoff, you only need wifi that works under Sierra and BT 4.0 - then you use the CAT tool to patch your system.

Oh...and in case it wasn't obvious - disable your internal BT adapter before you plug in the USB one (having two of them running will only cause issues).
Ok, I ordered the adaptor! Yes, I was suspecting that I will need to disable one of the adaptors. Haven't looked how that is done yet, but I am sure I will figure it out.
You know there is a new feature in Sierra where you can copy something on your mac, and then use paste on you iphone. The same buffer share between the devices. So, will that feature also work after using new BTL and CAT?

Yep, all of the other continuity features should work - it's just the one that requires the new network card.

typically, just using another usb drive worked fine. thanks for the tips anywho :)

edit: aha. "macOS could not be installed on your computer" error. that is all it says, no reason why, just that. and now my El Capitan install is gone (files etc still there, i guess it just removed el capitan details from the boot record or w/e)

i don't urgently need my mbp or anything, but uh, haha. is there any magic i can put into the terminal (can launch terminal from the macos installer, before trying to install) that might help? i'll take a picture of the error and attach it if it spits it at me again.

You don't provide enough information for us to help you.
Your mbp model has been successfully patched here many times. I have a 5,3 patched a zillion times with many of the methods explained on this thread.
Can you boot to recovery and if so what OS is that? Check in terminal.
Did you follow @foxlet 's recommendation about logging? If not please do so and report.
Can you restore your system to its original state? It is quite easy to pick the wrong disk, partition, settings etc... restarting from scratch and following instructions carefully may help.
Do you have a good backup of your system?

Great! That's the main reason I updated to sierra and got into getting USB dongle thing. I don't have apple watch, so I don't care about the "time of fight". Thanks again for answering my questions.

Now that I was thinking about occupying one of my usb ports with the BTL dongle I saw my dvd rom on the side of the macbook. Then I remembered that there are things for sale like optibay that let you connect another hard drive to your laptop replacing the dvd rom. And that brought me to a thought, that technically, it would've been possible if somebody made a sata2 bluetooth+wifi dongle that we could place in there))) or maybe even a sata2 usb hub))) That would solve a lot of problems for people with outdated macs.

Anyway, after I get the dongle, the last thing I will need to do to have my macbook working strong for another 2-3 years is replacement of the thermal paste. It must have completely evaporated after these 7 years of heavy usage.

Pretty sure everyone's is. Shame they don't let you resize to eliminate the space.

Edit: Aha! Do a View, Customize and eliminate one of the icons (I got rid of mouse, as I use my trackpad). :DScreen Shot 2016-10-01 at 3.21.32 PM.png

Hi again, guys!

Successfully installed Sierra on my Mac mini 3,1 (Early 2009) with the newer WiFi + Bluetooth card. Almost everything is working well but I can't view the Time Machine screen. I can se the right sidebar, with timeline, but where I should see the folders is all black.

Anyone else with this glitch?

Thank you again.

harlleysathler .. you have a mac mini 3.1 early in 2009 and what you have for a WiFi BT card in there,
the running under Sierra?
I have mac mini 3.1 late in 2009 and my WiFi BT card BCM4321 is not supported by Sierra.
Write to us please how this is possible with you. thank you

Hi, Pinarek.

The card is from a MacBook A1342. The connector is the same of the stock mini WiFi card, but it's small and the holes are offset.

Here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ed-macs-thread.1977128/page-127#post-23625532

You can read what I did to adapt this card in the mini. It's working very well.

harlleysathler ... big thanks for this good news. They are the first he has made the exchange practical.
Are there problems with the antenna connectors? are the same as for the BCM4321? or larger ?
or because you have to change what?

The connectors look a bit different, but the antenna cables connect tight and the performance is the same, so I guess they are ok.

The bluetooth antenna cable required more attention, because of the few extra centimeters to connect, but I could mount it with no problems.

harlleysathler ... you now have the WiFi card from the Mac book in the Mac mini 3.1 in operation and works Completely restructured normal, or any problems and you have no problems with the antenna plug? because you write, "you think" there are no problems.

I have just one ordered from Ebay, comes from China and is without shipping costs for US $ 8. Is the same as you have, from a Mac Book A1342 mid 2010

Here Link my Order:

Yes, I have a macbook wifi card in my mini and it works perfectly (running it a few days now). The antennas are correctly connected. The connectors are tight, no loose connections. The speed of my link is normal so far and my bluetooth devices (Keyboard, Mouse and Trackpad) are working normal. So, it totally worth the purchase. This card works in Sierra, as I'm posting these replies from this Mac mini connected over WiFi through a MacBook AirPort card.

harlleysathler ... thank you my friend, is yes just awesome it now with Sierra EVERYTHING runs perfectly. I have my Mac mini upgraded with 8GB DDR3 RAM and a ADATA SSD (SATA3) with 480GB.

I was on the verge scoot back to sell for 320 euros, because even now upgraded.

I had him 4 weeks before purchased with 160GB spinning disk (orig.Apple of 2008) and only 2GB of RAM for 180 euros, from a private user. But since I have 2 good modern Hackintosh, have much more performance (2 machines with MSI Z97 motherboard and quad-core Intel processor 3.8 Ghz and each with 16 GB RAM) I wanted the Mac ini 3.1 repel again, already annoyed the ebe the WiFi with Sierra gets.

But now that it yes but then work, then I will keep the mini love small Mac probably nevertheless.

Mine os upgraded too, with 8GB RAM and a Fusion, with a 500GB Momentus XT HDD with a 120GB Samsung EVO SSD. This is my primary computer for manu years now. Planning a Hackintosh for the next year since new minis aren't powerful as this was when launched and I don't like iMacs and can't afford a Mac Pro.

boot options now are just my windows bootcamp and a recovery for 10.11.2 which is not too useful as apparently time machine had no backup saved. recovery states it is el capitan, from what i can see.
(i don't mind not having a backup though, this mbp is long overdue a format and a fresh install! have already copied everything i wanted over to my PC now, so i'm going to put my hdd back in and see if formatting the drive before attempting to install sierra helps.)

here is the installer log when i try to install macos right now (over el capitan) - http://pastebin.com/GWeCdZkL
i will try formatting and installing again, i'll upload another log if that fails. --edit: fomatting did nothing, log was exactly the same. i guess my patching failed somewhere?

bonus question, is it necessary for me to reinstall an old compatible version of os x just to download and patch a sierra installer - or is there a pre-patched sierra i can download and stick on my usb from my pc?

It's noted right here:

Oct 1 21:23:13 MacBook-Pro OSInstaller[482]: PackageKit: Install Failed: Error Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=110 "An error occurred while extracting files from the package “Essentials.pkg”." UserInfo={NSUnderlyingError=0x7ff178397bf0 {Error Domain=PKXARArchiveErrorDomain Code=101 "archive verify failed"

The Essentials package from the macOS Sierra image got corrupted somewhere down the line (the download itself most likely) and the Installer can't read it properly.

Extra Note: In some cases it can also happen with bad RAM as the data is read from USB, but it's very rare.

Followed directions on my mid-2009 MBP. Thank you!

But I'm stuck at the "Installing on [harddrive_name].... About 29 minutes remaining" screen. It's been here for hours without the progress bar showing up at all. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

mm okie dokie. guess i'll throw el capitan back on and try downloading and patching again. ty

I just used the AUSEnabler on the final release version of Mac OS Sierra.

Can anyone tell me if there have been any updates since the day that Sierra was officially released? Also, now that I have applied the AUSEnabler patch, can I expect to get regular OS updates in the App store along with my other app updates?

Thanks

Hi everyone! I'm here with an iMac 9,1 - was wondering 1) how OS updates and further upgrades work once the patched version of macOS Sierra has been installed. I am sure the answer is somewhere in these pages but your help is much appreciated! 2) Does Time Machine still work properly when using a patched system?

Thanks in advance for your help!
