My experience with OpenCore has been so far great, but started seeing weird behaviour on my MBP 15" mid 2014 - I don't seem to be able to invoike OTA software updates to the system, the preference menu either doesn't load at all or takes forever to load, but won't download anything even if I click on it

any suggestions please?
OTA does not work with OpenCore, cause macos thinks that the system partition has been altered and loads the full OS.
Well at least in never worked on any of my machines, but this is what I read about OTA not working.
When the preference menu does not load or takes forever. I user Lockrattler to manually install the updates. https://eclecticlight.co/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/lockrattler437.zip

Yeah, I use that tool too to get security updates… the OTA updates did work previously but not since I upgraded to Sonoma.

Thanks for confirming this! I’m getting M4 Max machine this weekend and my old laptop will be downgraded to original OS it came with, 10y of hard work is a lot :)

Well.. I did it again.. put Linux mint on this 2012MBP for about a day and it did bring back my BT module so I could use BT mouse again.. but I just couldn't deal with all that right now, so reloaded Catalina and was having mail issues with hotmail again.. so I took the plunge again. I wiped it and installed OCLP/Sonoma 14.7.7. So far BT mouse working and network. About to start email account configs. We'll see how that goes.

Well, mail accounts setup just fine on this with OCLP/Sonoma. I was on OCLP/Sonoma earlier this year or last year and had upgraded from Catalina with it a couple times, using TM Backup to restore back to Catalina and upgrade again. I then had done it with Sequoia but that that OS did not work well on this old thing. Sonoma was decent. But then the BT mod died on it. I replaced it once and it died again. I threw this in the closet. I just recently pulled it back out and started playing with it with LM again.. Anyway, back on Sonoma and liking it. Just hope the Bluetooth doesn't die again.

Aaaand it's back again...lol.. anyone with a 2012MBP having this BT disappearing act?

Also, on movie downloads in TV app, the download clocking arrow circle thing doesn't show most times when downloads are going on.. anyone else seeing that too?

Updated to 14.7.7 on macbook pro 11,2 and OCLP 1.4.2 with Intel graphics through OTA. No issues.

This time I performed the correct procedure: removed root patching (no reboot), OTA update, reboot, install root patch, reboot.

OCLP 1.4.2, macOS 14.7.5 -> macOS 14.7.6 OTA, macbookpro 11,2. I hit an issue.

A couple of you - @JedNZ and @RumorChaser - have said this past week that you backed out the root patches before going OTA to 14.7.6. What is the reasoning, is this common knowledge? I’ve never heard about it before today.

I had to do this dance because I did not allow "rm" in the security settings. It is a start up item by OCLP to automatically remove non-bootable kexts in case of an OTA. If you allowed "rm" you should not have to remember to remove root patch before an OTA.

What's happening behind the scenes, is that root patching modifies the system partition by replacing the latest metal frameworks with legacy metal from an older macOS, and also puts the Intel graphics kext into the Data partition. When you boot normally, the Intel drivers works correctly with the older metal framework. But after an OTA, your system partition is wiped and replaced by Apple default one, without the legal metal framework. When the system boots with the Intel kext drivers in the Data partition, it will get stuck booting. You'll have to follow this procedure to remove the extra kext to allow it to boot. That's what happened to me last time.

Basically don't mess with OCLP settings, or if you do, know what you're doing because you will not get support for an unconventional configuration. (Same applies if you install pre-release macOS)

Updated to macOS 14.7.7 with yet again a lot of issues during reboots with crashing

Code:
WindowServer

and failing Bluetooth toggle, it does not stick when activated.

Code:
bluetoothd

Well, my BT comes and goes on the 2012MBP on OCLP/Sonoma 14.7.7. If I have my BT mouse turned on when it boots, it will usually finally connect and work as long as the machine doesn't go to sleep. If screen locks on battery and I come back a while later, sometimes it doesn't work. It's more reliable when Mac is connected to power. I'll have to start to keep detailed notes.

Smooth OTA upgrade from Sonoma 14.7.6 -> 14.7.7 on my MBP6,2. Applying post-install patches with OCLP 2.4.0. Posting this with Safari 18.6.

EDIT: I am seeing the bluetooth problems reported by others, but I haven't taken the time to assess.

My BT issue hasn't returned as of yet, however, I've ordered a replacement ribbon cable from Airport card to system board. Should be here in 3-5. Other than that, and the other browser workarounds for streaming issues, this 15" 2012MBP is working great. Even Find-My is working with it.. The last time I went from Catalina to Sonoma/Sequoia, it would not show up in Find-My. Location services weren't working as expected at that point(Feb timeframe-14.x). Works now! I haven't tried Sequoia on this again, and most likely won't until/unless I get a 2tb drive for it and do that separately so as not to ruin this drive. Thanks devs!

Yeah this OCLP/Sonoma 14.7.7 on the 2012MBP is working great. Even the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M card is working great! I have an external monitor hooked to the TB port and works great!. Just wish I could get the AMD Radeon R9 M370X GPU on the 2015MBP to work with it.. oh well.

I took a quick look at Bluetooth on my MBP6,2 running Sonoma 14.7.7 and see the problem. We've seen this before when BluetoolFixup.kext wasn't working properly:

Working Bluetooth (Ventura 13.7.7)

Non-working Bluetooth (Sonoma 14.7.7)

EDIT: I just noticed that I'm still using BluetoolFixup.kext 2.7.0 (not the latest 2.7.1). Will test and report back.

EDIT2: BluetoolFixup.kext 2.7.1 did not fix the problem.

I found this thread again this morning with a Google search. Decided to post here instead of the Sequoia thread, even though I've been trying both versions. I have settled on Sonoma as my open core upgrade for my late 2015, 27" iMac as it's the most stable. So, for macOS, for the time being, will stick to this, or Monterey. Then I have my KUBUNTU install on an external 4TB My Passport drive. The only real limitations I've found, are the Safari limitations with DRM, but considering I can, and do usually just use Firefox, or Chrome, if I wanted to, I could stream content with those two.

Besides that, Sonoma + OCLP 2.4.0 has been one of the most stable experiences I've had.

Interesting.. I didn't dig in that far before. I did just yesterday have an event where I had disconnected from power and ran it on floor watching movies for a bit. I then went outside and it went to sleep off power. When I woke it up the BT mouse was not working again. So as I suspected before, it seems to happen when off power. I was able to get it back by connecting to power, then rebooting. If I have time today I might recreate that again and check that item.

I agree. OCLP2.4/Sonoma 14.7.7 is great, other than this weird Bluetooth issue and Safari streaming content.

As far as streaming goes, even on a supported install, many streaming services still limit browser functionality compared to their mobile app, or streaming device app. I know VUDU, now Fandango at Home, one of my main digital libraries outside of iTunes, is limited to SD, or doesn't work at all in a browser. In terms of iTunes, well with MoviesAnywhere now, it really doesn't matter anymore, as compatible tiles get populated to all supported services, so it's more about TV Shows, and studios that don't support MoviesAnywhere, that make the difference for me now in terms of which service to use. The other OCLP limitation was 3D in VMs not working on some models, and I solved that with my bare metal install of Linux on my external drive.

Plus, with the iMac being my main, and only really usable mac left, I can't really play around with it much anymore. I need it to stay stable so it can be dependable as my daily machine until it's replaced. So picking a good balance has bee tough.
