macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

David: The iMac has a 2 TB Fusion Drive. 128 GB SSD and a 2 TB 7200rpm mechanical drive. So far as I posted on the Ventura thread, it's running fine from a 1 TB WD Blue 7200 rpm drive in a powered usb 3 enclosure for 3.5" drives. So, will wait for open core 69 to be officially released and then monitor the thread for anything that might come up.
Rbart, thanks for the feedback. I don't know if this is standard behavior or not, but Ventura got root patched during install, so when I went through the setup it was already fully functional. Not sure if it was due to Monterey already being installed as the main OS, or if they changed the process. However, upon first boot after setup I had acceleration working, and the only thing OCLP asked was if I wanted to install to the system drive over the usb flash for the boot loader. Checking the root patches showed them already installed.

Also, wanted to make mention that a friend of mine from the #macosx IRC channel mentioned that in his testing, he was able to get the delta updates like on supported Macs by reverting the root patches before checking for updates, and reapplying them after the update so you don't have to get the full download. He did this with Monterey on I think, a 2012 iMac, maybe 2013. It was an older Mac either way.

The OCLP developers have merged the changed incorperated in the Sonoma branch into the main OCLP 0.6.9n branch, and that latest version is now available, dated 9-18-2023 9:19am the laast I checked. You might consider using that version. The final release of the Sonoma branch may be due soon after Sonoma is released on the 26th.
As you must know, it is possible to split the Fusion drive into two separate drives, but that means you have to back up the 2TB drive as splitting the drives will erase all of the data. It isn't a difficult process, but it is time consuming and managing the small Apple blade SSD will require keeping large files elsewhere. I have 66GB free on mine now, so it is possible. You may consider doing that isn't worth the effort and/or time.

I'm aware of the ability to split the fusion drive, I had considered it a few years ago, but I decided that I was happy with the performance, that I just left it alone. When I first tried Ventura when it was released, it ran without issues on the Fusion drive, I reverted to Monterey mainly because of the initial issues Ventura had on this mac. with that said, Ventura runs great from the external drive, so I could try Sonoma on the same drive to see what I get. If I'm happy with it on this drive, it should be fine on the fusion drive.

My biggest frustration, is mainly the way Apple changed the layout of settings, and other things I'm used to in the older releases of the OS. So, I probably should get used to Ventura, then consider sonoma.

No, it's the inverse: they have merged main into Sonoma branch.
 
@MacinMan I'm late the the party and not sure if you're still looking for opinions about Ventura vs Sonoma. It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. Sounds like you have gobs of disk space. Create another APFS volume and install Sonoma there. Multi-boot Ventura and Sonoma until you confirm for yourself that Sonoma does everything you need.

Yes you are right, main branch merged into the Sonoma Branch. But then they changed something in the main branch too. In any case, I am running the Sonoma RC, so I have the Sonoma brach installed. Works great.

changes in main branch are very minor for a while now. Nothing that bring a better support.
I am also using Sonoma branch with a triple boot:
- Monterey 12.6.9 (supported - stock)
- Ventura 13.5.2 (OCLP)
- Sonoma 14RC (OCLP)

@rbart I will soon be patching Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura and Sonoma with 0.6.9n Sonoma-dev branch. For now, I patch Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura with 0.6.8 and Sonoma with 0.6.9n Sonoma-dev. Since OCLP post-install patcher does not touch the EFI, the post-install patches from 0.6.8 and 0.6.9 co-exist (on separate APFS volumes) without issues. I use a single 0.6.9-generated Open Core EFI to multi-boot all 4 macOS versions.

BTW: I fully recognize this is an unsupported config and still advise those with less Open Core experience to use the same OCLP version to generate both the OC EFI and apply post-install patches. For the MBP6,2, I diff'd the OCLP-generate EFIs from 0.6.8 and 0.6.9 and manually resolve differences that were important to me. Again, not for the average user.

Any update on the Sonoma patch for the MBP14,x hardware please @dhinakg ?

Not sure if any of the Nightly builds support it, or if it is looking likely?

I have a MBP14,1 sat on my desk if any testing needs carrying out.
 
Pinging the Devs is a great way to incur their wrath (or to just be ignored). Did you mean this?

Best to know the link to the github repo and monitor yourself for desired changes and revisions.

I'm looking forward to seeing how well the final release of Sonoma works when it's released next week. The thought of being able to run the current version of macOS again to go with iOS and TvOS is a nice thought. Just for the integrations that may not work due to older software.
 
I am unsure if I am doing something wrong or missing a step. I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2017 (MBP14,2) model that I am trying to upgrade to Sonoma via OpenCore. After I boot in to the installer via my USB it does not detect my Macintosh HD after loading in to the installer and only shows the USB stick. I've checked Disk Utility as well and it doesn't show there either. I have installed OpenCore on to my Macintosh HD so unsure as to why it is not being detected. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you are using the Sonoma branch version of OCLP?

Why are you booting from a USB stick drive? The Sonoma RC has not been released in a form that can be used to make a RC USB install disk, it is available as a Public or Developer beta from a working ventura install only. So you should be installing Sonoma from a running Ventura install, after running the Build and Install to disk from the Sonoma branch OCLP.
BTW, the final release of Sonoma 14.0 is scheduled for the 26th of Sept.
 
MrMacintosh has installer links through the last beta. It is the only way I could bring up and update Ventura & Sonoma. Incremental updates never worked for me on any version.
With the latest nightly builds, I have had a lot of issues with the standalone GUI installer. I just run it straight as a Python3 command.
I have Ventura running nicely with the 0.6.8 Release GUI app. I run the nightly Sonoma OCLP builds from a separate EFI partition.
Wasted hours on that before getting smart.
I do have an original Mojave SSD in slot#1 of my Mac Pro with BootCamp Windows 10 - totally stock. Also a DosDude Catalina on another SSD. Rarely booted but useful. Mojave is slow in comparison to Catalina (native boot and OCLP,) Sonoma, and Ventura.
Installation of Ventura on a PCiE M2 SSD was from Catalina booted under OCLP. The GATEWAY DRUG.

My card is broadcom. I haven't solved my problem yet. However, they made a regulation for the OpenIntelWireless kext used for Intel cards and suggested it as a solution. If your card is Intel, you can find the installation of kexts at https://github.com/OpenIntelWireless and the Modified kext is available at https://github.com/OpenIntelWireless/itlwm/issues/883#issuecomment-1625204187.
 
RC is strange, if I open a window or program, it puts the window in the background after a few seconds. quite annoying. there is a solution?
