System status says all good, but I still have the error!
That's because it is the server hosting the file.. not Apple

well Success !
1. connect vpn to australia.
2. download starts slow as hell
3.disconnect the vpn , download freeze for a min and than resumes at rocket speed !
I can confirm the same from Ireland. Disconnected from Japan and it's now blazing fast without any VPN.

Any reports back on that twitter link? I am too afraid to try to install it from that one.
I got it downloaded - it's the right size and signed by Apple. I'm installing Catalina on a VM right now and I'm going to isolate the VM and try upgrading it with that file.

Apple this morning released macOS Big Sur to the public, and since the software went live, it has had extremely long download times that have prevented many from being able to install it.

Even those who have made progress through the download have run into problems where the software downloading process is suddenly interrupted and must be restarted. Others have reported being able to download the update and then having the installation fail. Apple's site appears to be having some major issues due to the number of people attempting to download the update at once.

In addition to these Big Sur download problems, Apple's developer site is also down at this time, and as a result, some third-party apps are unable to be opened up at this time.

An error occurred while installing the selected updates

It's not clear what's causing the problem. It could be that the macOS Big Sur downloads are failing due to a developer site issue or the developer site could be failing under the strain of macOS Big Sur demand, but it is clear that those hoping to get the new software should hold off until things are more stable.

Apple's System Status page is listing an issue with macOS Software Updates and says that the problem is "currently being investigated."

Mine is stuck at this screen, the bar doesn't appear to be moving. Anyone know if it does get stuck here for a while?

Disconnecting the vpn didn’t work for me in the US. So I have turned it back on, this time to Germany, to see if that’s faster. Seems to be about the same speed as Australia from here in california.

It's suddenly downloading fine on all 3 of my Macs here in the UK - no VPN or clearing caches - I just clicked the button again - expecting the same error - and it's downloading :)

Once it started working it came through quickly & smoothly. Just about to click that 'Continue' button...

Again wondering if someone knows where the installer is stored...I can't find it. It used to be in Applications, but its not there and I can't find it in Alfred searching "macOS Big Sur" or any other installer name for that matter
this is where it appears to be on my machine

Same here (also in CA) -- although I'm connected to Switzerland now, instead of Australia.

Those of us that "supposedly" downloaded the FULL file earlier are still in purgatory. Won't even initiate a download because the broken file keeps trying to install first. I'll just pile on to the group asking how do we delete that file so it can start over! UGH
