Yup. No one is losing anything. They’ve just made what was a static black bezel dynamic everywhere except the notch, allowing menu bar text to live there and not eat into the screen real estate. Works for me.
Don't bet too much on that one. It only exists at all because the 1080p tech doesn't fit behind such a thin screen.... yet.well, look at that - who would have thought???
Notch haters, get on with life, it's going to stay for years to come
The menu bar is moved up, and the space for everything else is the same. So extra space for windows/full screen apps as well.Sooo…why not just keep the top bezel at that point? Extra space just for a taller menu bar?
I disagree. Losing a slither of the entire width of your screen for the sake of short, thin, unnecessary notch is a lose-lose.Great design solution! It's really a win-win.
Do the menus disappear when you do that?I do all the time. VSCode, Xcode, MS Teams, Calendar, iTunes even. I much prefer switching desktops with a quick keystroke (or, more often, finger-flick) than trying to find a particular sub-optimally-sized window.
Enjoy WindowsThat’s ok, I won’t buy an Apple laptop then if it has that notch then, I’ll spend my money elsewhere, Apples loss at the end of the day. I accept it on my iPhone, it would annoy me endlessly on my laptop screen, wasting space for
Don't be so unimaginative. It would detect the screen being lifted, or you could simply tap the touch pad, of which both cases work exactly like that in older MBP's, and then the face detect would kick in.Face ID on a MacBook is a waste of time because to authenticate an unlock or purchase you need the user to press a button... a button such as the one with Touch ID already in it.
That combined with the fact that many of us like to cover our cameras with a sticker means Touch ID is the better option all around. Not sure why people are so upset that MacBooks don't have Face ID.
Yes. Pressing the mouse against the top of the screen makes them slide down.Do the menus disappear when you do that?
I shall be waiting for that day.Nobody would have moaned if the bezel was slightly bigger with no camera notch. Apple knew this would polarise people. They purposely amend features in stages to give people more of a reason to upgrade again and again (just like the small incremental changes they have in each iPhone). You know for a fact that there won't be a notch at some point in the future.
Back in 2017, they sold the iPhone 8/8+ alongside the iPhone X.Please, explain to me how you can validate that when there is NO iOS notch less option for the sales to be compared against?
I'd like filling a car sales lot with automatics, making people have to custom order a manual if they want it, but wait 3-4 months of delivery, and then bragging about how automatics out sale manuals, and clearly people don't care about manuals.
Nope. It’s a 14.2 inch MacBook that goes down to a 14.0 inch screen when you’re in fullscreen mode, unless you go into the system preferences and enable the menu bar in full screen apps, a new feature in Monterey, and then the 14.2 inches is fully utilizedSo it’s a 14 inch Macbook that reverts to a 13 inch when you‘re actually using it.
Yes, Monterey gives the option for the menu bar to always stay visible. If anything, this makes full-screen mode even better than before. I dislike how the menubar pushes down in full-screen mode, today. Now that there's a dedicated space for it, I hope it can just appear and disappear (or optionally stay visible) in full-screen mode without pushing into the window content.
There isI hope they add a setting to show it as it would be a big improvement over the current system of having to put your cursor at the top of the screen for a second to get the menu bar to drop down. I'd rather always see it.
Sensible would imply less complexity, and apple has shown us how the substrate needs to be curved and curled in order to form a notch. Sensible would imply no notch at all.Why are there so many people here with no logic at all!? Just rant about notch without sensible arguments and haven’t done any research either before comment. You lose almost nothing at all from that notch compare to previous generation beside aesthetics. What Apple do with the notch is the most sensible choice.
I think he was talking more about things like Apple Pay or password verification, where currently on the iPad Pro and iPhone, you have to verify that you’re trying to do that by double clicking the side button.Don't be so unimaginative. It would detect the screen being lifted, or you could simply tap the touch pad, of which both cases work exactly like that in older MBP's, and then the face detect would kick in.
Not pointless at all. I use full screen between multiple applications and on my primary desktop I have windows open, too. Full screen offers greater focus opportunity and that's how I utilize it.I'd like to see how multitasking between many apps/windows in full screen does you any good? You need to swipe completely between screens, on top of that, your dock is gone along with your menu bar all in an effort just to save a few vertical pixels.
Pointless.
But they did didn’t they? The windows area is still 16:10. Nothing obstructs your productivity or entertainment area.Sensible would imply less complexity, and apple has shown us how the substrate needs to be curved and curled in order to form a notch. Sensible would imply no notch at all.
