it disappears because it is not a notch. it's an xdd display bezel with built-in camera.

anyway screen is much bigger than 15" MBP. And they said it is 16.2". so in full screen mode, it's probably something like a ~15.7" screen.

I’m embarrassed that I’ve never once thought of or considered thickness when it came to FaceID on a MacBook…

Maybe they‘ll do something similar to Huawei’s laptop and put the camera and FaceID tech in a pop out on the keyboard 😂
Or they could move the notch to the bottom of the screen area. Maybe the complainers would find this less obtrusive. And then we would call it the "crotch".

Originally posted this in another thread but its relevant here too.

Imagine editing a photo, using your trackpad to zoom into a section and the big black rectangle notch covers part of your image, so you zoom back out again and move it around so you can see the full image again.

The notch was ugly enough on the iPhone, now they've gone and added it to the MacBook. For clean aesthetic fans, the notch is awful. Even more annoying that the iPad looks better and is the more futuristic device (touch screen, pencil, attachable keyboard etc.), but people need devices like the MacBook to do their day job (Xcode, Ableton Live, Unity, Unreal Engine to name a few).

From a programmers perspective, it makes app design that little bit more awkward and I'm wondering if Windows will ever have support for this awkward layout.

I had high hopes for this machine, reluctantly will hold on to my 2013 MacBook pro for now.

Did you even read the article? there is not a single scenario where this is possible!

On full screen mode it is a black bar (or optionally displays Menubar)
When not on full screen, it is the Menubar, how are you possibly going to move your image up there even while zooming? it's not possible even intentionally....

No matter how hard you try to justify it, the notch is a failure. This is when we miss Steve the most, he would never allow this to happen.
I tend to agree with you. We wouldn't have these half-assed attempts to productize brain dead ideas, Butterfly keyboards, Touch Bars, and now notches. It's easy to say Yes but tough love from Steve would be a No for all these whacky ideas.

More elegant could be to just not have a notch? its not giving you ANYTHING beneficial and its one of the most hated things on phones. Why would anyone think its a good idea for a laptop?
OK but some of us like it, and for those of you who don’t, it’s not taking away anything.
Also, if the notch were one of the most hated things about the iPhone, than the iPhone X through iPhone 13 series wouldn’t be doing so well, now would they?

Nobody would have moaned if the bezel was slightly bigger with no camera notch. Apple knew this would polarise people. They purposely amend features in stages to give people more of a reason to upgrade again and again (just like the small incremental changes they have in each iPhone). You know for a fact that there won't be a notch at some point in the future.

This is what I also saw after watching the keynote. The thing is though, what resolution is being used when in full screen mode? What is the net resolution (visible)? What is the net size of the display when in full screen mode? How many inches are really being used? This is an 16,2" display only with the notch visible.
On the 14" display the situation is similar. Comparing this to my M1 13" MBP, I can see the following advantages of the 14" MBP:
  • Better performance
  • Better display with ProMotion
  • Better Audio
  • Better Camera
  • More Ports
  • MagSafe
On the other side the 14" MBP has also disadvantages compared to the M1 13,3" MBP:
  • No touch bar
  • It's heavier and thicker
  • Worse battery life
  • The notch brings no advantages
Especially the last point is a deal breaker to me. When The M1 came out most people were impressed by the combination of performance and amazing battery life, never seen before on any computing device. Now with the M1 Pro and Max battery is great when considering the performance, but it has become normal again. It's not amazing like with the M1. I would have liked to order a 14" MBP, but considering the disadvantages I will probably stay with the 13" M1 MBP. If I could only have the ProMotion display though..
the notch brings a better camera, which is great for some not so great for others, but the screen is bigger
so for most the notch won't affect a thing.

Sooo…why not just keep the top bezel at that point? Extra space just for a taller menu bar?
Exactly. I don't understand the people that are so excited about this. If you are going to go through the trouble of hiding the notch when in full screen, why not just do without the notch completely? Besides, it's not like the menu bar takes up a lot of vertical space anyway.

the lack of Face ID is a crime. its so much better for this form factor than the other devices even

It would have been nice to have but I have to reach for the keyboard anyway if I'm going to get any work done so touch ID isn't much of a downgrade on a laptop.

Do people actually use programs in full screen like that? I surely dont!

Maybe watch a photo full screen at times, thats the only time I'd notice this!

Yes. When apps are in this mode I can three finger swipe left or right to switch back and forth between them.

OK but some of us like it, and for those of you who don’t, it’s not taking away anything.

Please, explain to me how you can validate that when there is NO iOS notch less option for the sales to be compared against?

I'd like filling a car sales lot with automatics, making people have to custom order a manual if they want it, but wait 3-4 months of delivery, and then bragging about how automatics out sale manuals, and clearly people don't care about manuals.

also with the apps running in full screen, the notch is hidden because the app does not extend all the way out to the border which makes sense as you dont want the notch intruding your application. but it also means you have have got a big bezel at the top like the 16 inch macbook. so we are back to square one?

and yet people that with no intent to buy one.. will still complain
Or, people with the intent to buy one have now lost that intention.

Or people with the intent to buy one now have to put up with it, like they had to for the TouchBar, the lack of HDMI, SD slot, or MagSafe, or the butterfly keyboards, or the soldered RAM (moot now) and SSDs, etc. etc.

If Apple customers could live with the butterfly keyboard for FOUR YEARS, they can and will survive the "Notch Era".

I don't like it, but Apple KNEW people wouldn't and mitigated the issue by making the screen taller and forcing the OS to not use the "horns" other than for the menu bar, unlike the iPhone. Which is good.
