Why does it say it BRICKS the system, but then says that you can just reinstall 12.2.1 and be back up and running?

It's unfortunate the OS update is broke, but it doesn't brick the system.
You need a second Mac to do a DFU restore, Apple Configurator 2 and old IPSWs. Not everyone affected has that, or are able to get into DFU. This isn't something the "average" user can do.

What is so special about a replacement logic board? It gets "bricked" while a normal board does not.

Also, why does Apple need to update the firmware with every OS update?
Good question! I've tried to figure this out. It has to be something to do with the way the logic board is programmed to take a new serial number, or the link to a new Touch ID module... essentially, it seems to be something about the T2 security chip not liking the fact the logic board is different.

I’m disassembling yet another iMac this evening that someone here used Target Disk mode on (corrupting the SSD firmware) after I just went through this & forbade TDM last week. Luckily it’s old enough that the drive is replaceable. Bc AppleCare expired 3 months ago, Apple offered a replacement 1TB (Samsung) SSD for $700 lol. On the plus side, it’s a good opportunity to bump it up to a 4tb aftermarket SSD for $500 instead, with the added benefit of Monterey not being able to be installed on it ever again. Mojave forever.

The Genius Bar techs were familiar, confirmed they’ve been seeing a lot of this, & narrowed it down to the changes in how Monterey handles higher level aspects of the file system. In looking up the specific errors of this problem I found quite a few others having to shoulder the costs of new SSDs & Logic boards.

Monterey has a big problem.

Last year, my kid puked on his MB Air, and most of the internals had to be replaced.

Updated last night, won't start.

It's always something.

I'm curious to know which versions of Windows. Windows 10 is vastly more stable than macOS Monterey.
I hope in a future with human kind can't stop spreading such things for any reason they have. Windows 10 is a mess on many levels and we today lost 6 hours (3 of US) for idiotic issue and even 2 complete freeze on clean Windows 10 machines. Sure Windows 10 is stable is you stand see watching the monitor.

Do you think those kind of issue happens much less on other platforms? I work with about 200 Windows PSs just for one of many company, I see the worst daily.
Yes, but how is this an excuse? People pay a premium for a Mac because of all those "it just works" promises, and the idea it's a superior user experience.

The Windows machines that give me these issues are mostly purchased because they were the lowest price option for a certain CPU/memory/SSD config.

Wow this is timely. I tried updating my daughter's 2020 Macbook Air to Monterey two days ago and it completely bricked. It won't boot in any way, shape, or form. Fortunately, it's under AC+ so it goes in this week. What an embarrassment.

I suppose that means there's something wrong with Apple's logic board replacement process. They missed some kind of ID update, which the FW is using to checksum the machine (like the iPhone "your screen has changed" thing). Luckily it sounds like it's recoverable, which implies that it's some new integrity check.

Wonder if it's happening to Apple-replaced logic boards or all providers.

This is embarrassing. Sometimes I wonder how this software makes it through beta phases. No doubt, a new software update will be out very soon by Apple.
Easy how many devs and PB testers testing 12.3 betas spilled coffee on their new 2021 MBP and had to have their logic board replaced? The fact that you could just do DFU using 12.2.1 IPSW could get you working again is acceptable until iBoot is updated for recognizing logic board. I am glad this been made more visible, as it’s good to know what to do if it occurs.

Hey we have 12.4 betas coming soon so new system FW will be part of that. ;)

Google confirmation bias. It's like a police officer thinking his jurisdiction is a mess just because he caught a couple of breaking and enterings and got a homicide case landed on his desk.

Windows 10 isn't a mess. You only think so because your job requires you to deal with the worst of its problems. I never had a machine bricked doing an update of Windows 10 or from prior versions of Windows but I hear about macOS Monterey bricking Macs all the time. If you think about it, Windows 10 is vastly more stable since there are a myriad of configurations it needs to deal with but macOS only Macs that Apple itself sells.

Whaddabout? Irrelevant to this discussion. Whether it happens on platforms or not, this is a Max discussion.

I really wish Apple would pull their finger out and make Apple Configurator work on an iPhone or iPad (more likely thanks to USB-C) so that it can be used to easily revive a firmware knackered Mac, or another iPhone, or another iPad. In essence, what would be great is if a user has at least two Apple devices running iOS, iPadOS or macOS - it would be possible to put one device into DFU and use the other to restore its firmware.

Would save a trip down to the not-so-local Apple Store.

Well, so long for fully locked down system. When it works it works wonders, when it doesn’t work, the effort to get it back to work can be absolutely daunting. Doubled with no data security feature on their soldered SSD, even with daily backup I'm still very concerned about my Mac becoming unusable at any point.

I've been using Apple products (and writing software for them) since 1986. The decline in QA over the last decade is very obvious to me.
Yet Apple has known nothing but increasing success over the past 10 years, becoming the world's first publicly traded $3 trillion company. That hardly screams declining QA, does it?

Two different things.

Apple needs to just slow down, offload distractions like TV programs, and get back to doing a better job on core products and software.
