Not sure what happened but this update failed concurrently on two of my Macs, neither with LB replacements.

One, my personal MacBook — 16" 2021 M1 Max. The other, my work MBP, 13" 2018 Intel (4 port).

Started upgrade of both at the same time, made dinner, came back, both stuck on the Apple progress bar screen. No movement after one additional hour, no time estimate. Hard reboot of both, same issue.

Followed Apple's guidelines:
- Boot into recovery, disk check, reboot. Failed.
- Boot into recovery, reinstall. Reinstall failed.
- Boot into external drive with macOS 12.3 installer. Reinstall failed.
- Revive firmware from other Mac. Reinstall macOS. Reinstall failed.

Only resolve I had for both machines was to nuke via the DFU "Restore" method. Luckily had Time Machine backups for both from that day.

No idea what went wrong and why both failed.
I had the same issue with 3 out of 4 virtual machines. Luckily I have snapshots and backups. If you ever find a solution, let me know!
 
I agree. Can people stop using the term bricked?
The Dev used the term when he reported his predicament. Brick is usually associated with something that is electronically inoperative and can't be undone. Consider this a instance of not looking at what you can do DFU wise going back to a older MacOS, instead of trying to reinstall the same MacOS 12.3 that messed him up. Yep lack of experience with something like this, but we always learn from our mistakes. ;)
 
Different things? Yes. Unrelated things? No. If Apple's QA were truly awful people would vote with their wallets and not buy Apple.

The latest macOS Monterey update, released to the public this week, is bricking Macs that have had their logic boards replaced, causing panic among customers who are unable to get their Mac back to a working state, according to a cluster of user reports posted on social media and Apple's support forums.

Apple this week released macOS Monterey 12.3, which among other things, brought Universal Control to users. Sadly, not all users are being able to experience Universal Control or the latest update at all.

As chronicled on an Apple Developer forum thread, users who attempt to update their Mac to macOS 12.3 from macOS 12.2.1 or earlier are met with errors, endless restart loops, and possibly a bricked Mac. The reports are limited to just Macs that have had their logic boards replaced, specifically new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.
According to the reports, there are two possible outcomes users are facing. Either a Mac becomes bricked and unusable, or a Mac finishes the update process and reboots but doesn't update and displays an "iBoot Panic" message.

A thread on Reddit by users also reports similar issues. "When I attempt to upgrade to 12.3 on a 2021 M1 14 inch macbook, the entire download and then upgrade sequence completes (30 or 40 minutes in upgrade sequence) and when it reboots has not upgraded and is still on 12.2.1," one user said.

In the case the Mac does not boot up after the update sequences, users must put their Mac into DFU and revive it manually. This process, however, requires users to have a second compatible Mac to revive their bricked Mac. As many customers only have one Mac, or no compatible Mac to use Apple Configurator with, they're forced to head to the Apple Store for assistance.

Even a trip to the Apple Store, however, will result in staff likely replacing the already faulty logic board with another logic board, putting users in an endless loop until the bug is patched. Users are generally reporting mixed results when trying to put their Mac into DFU mode, but one user on Reddit has offered some advice:
There are also reports on the MacRumors Forum, with one user saying, "I cannot install macOS 12.3 in any way: direct upgrade, install via App Store, Recovery Mode, DFU Restore, all failed. All versions before macOS 12.3 works. I have to download IPSW for macOS 12.2 to use it." Apple does offer IPSW files for macOS updates, but as stated above, that process requires a second Mac to install onto the bricked Mac.

Apple has so far not commented or acknowledged the specific issue bricking Macs attempting to update to macOS 12.3, but we've reached out to Apple for comment and will update accordingly.

My mac got bricked and got it back today. Tried updating it and it won't update. I sent it in for repair after spilling water on it back in January. Glad to hear it isn't just me!

There could be fluffy unicorns dancing on the other side of reality too. You don't get an unending $3tn success story based on shoddy QA. It's common sense, dear.

I was just trying to point that yes, I agree with you on a general sense, but in my opinion there are more factors at play (like their current hardware, the best in the industry, or the interoperability between devices -no other real tech ecosystem truly exists-) since Apple software has been on a steady decline (bug wise, particularly), in the last decade, and yet, like you say, they are the most valuable company in the world.

I agree that Apple software has bugs, but what software doesn't? I just dislike the whole canonisation of Steve Jobs, which is a way of implying everything would be perfect if it weren't for Tim Cook. Apple is a business. When it starts losing money, then go after Cook.

No canonisation of Jobs in my case at all (like i said, remember the IOS 4 fiasco on the Iphone 3G), but in my view, the Apple from 2000-2010 had particularly good software, in general (there were misfires, of course). I attribute it more to people like Bertrand Serlet and Forstall, though.

If you don’t want to update and you’re okay with the inherent risk that’s fine, however, you shouldn’t be misinforming those who may be looking to learn.
 
IMHO, Apple should support reviving a Mac from iOS devices (or even just an iPad) — be it via bluetooth or via USB-C/Lightening.
Wrong answer brosky. You shouldn't have to do this nonsense in the first place. Neither should I have to deal with it as someone who works for an MSP.

Monterey, what is it good for....

Following my experience with Monterey kernel panicing and destroying the file system, this latest feature doesn't exactly fill one with confidence for another attempt.

Sidecar's good, but most other features are decidedly Meh. New emoji's, rounded boxes... oh, my life's so complete... Kind of like Catalina. That also took 6 releases before it worked. Only three more to go Monterey!
 
Yet Apple has known nothing but increasing success over the past 10 years, becoming the world's first publicly traded $3 trillion company. That hardly screams declining QA, does it?

It says people are interested in price over quality. And Apple today is interested in stock price over product quality.

i have an Intel Macbook Pro, I got this issue too. 4-5 attempts and fails with system messages it finally installed. I had to keep trying as the system would not let me get into it. Kept saying system update failed, restart.

Attached is one of the two errors I got (i only snapped a picture of this one).

You must not remember IOS 4 performance on the Iphone 3G and the Ipod Touch 2G, for example.

I had an iPhone 3G (that I bought at midnight on the day it was released in Prague, Czech Republic). It worked fine for me, but it's been a long time.
 
So this applies only to a MBP that has had its logic board replaced? How many are you talking about here, reasonably?
 
We can only assume Apple already factored-in this inevitable side-effect of making a completely irreparable machine and decided it will affect so few computers that it will be of little consequence. We'll see how this pans out. My 2012 MPB non-retina is still soldiering on at ten years old, on its third battery and second HDD cable, my iMac is even older and has had a graphics card replacement...wonder how these new completely irreparable wonder-machines will compare in ten years.
I don't think Apple cared about repairability. For them, if a customer has a problem, all they need to do is replace the whole thing and charge a good amount of money. Oh you think that's expensive, Apple also has a solution for you, AppleCare. Apple wins the money either way.

Completely agreed. I have been a Mac user for the last 25 years, I switched companies in the past to Apple. I can't believe how pretty bad Apple quality control and customer care has been abandoned. I do have a brand new 16" , 3k macbook pro M1 Pro sitting aside never used, just to have as backup if my macbook 2014 16" fails. I can't trust Apple products anymore and I'm really considering switching to linux pc.
In the past we had some limited but possible ways to fix Apple devices, now they turn into pretty expensive paperweights if they fail. Simply can't believe that after Steve jobs gone his customer care legacy has been taken care so badly.
I'm happy now that I canceled my 64Gb 16" M1 max, maxed out macbook since I waited for two months and would not come before a trip. Can't trust Apple devices anymore.

Apple customer care and respect has been abandoned. After 25 years just on the Apple ecosystem I'm really considering moving to linux pc. Not windows for sure.
New macs just can't be trusted and do have a lot of issues since beginning. Powersafe, charging, memory leak ssd wearing and so on. I do have a new mac since november 2021 never used, 16" M1 Pro, 1Tb nearly 3k sitting on my pelican backpack not even setup. Can trust, it is a backup for my 2014 macbook pro 16 in. I trust my old mac and the newer ones. Apple is losing Steve Jobs credibility and legacy.
