I would love to use keychain but I won't use anything that stores all my passwords in a cloud. They need to add the option of syncing devices over local wifi or bluetooth like some other passwords managers provide. I know the cloud is secure and all that but its just a simple buggy update away from a nightmare scenario. I've been around long enough to see too many oops, sorry we had a breach. There is no way I am storing a Database with all my passwords on a cloud no matter how safe they tell me it is.
Exactly. That’s why I use DataVault.

Does... Does no one know about the Keychain Access app in the Utilities folder? It's been there since 10.5! It's synced to iCloud Keychain since day one.
Yep, it's a pretty decent app and the secure notes feature even enables you to include attachments such as PDF's and Images (drag and drop into the body of the note). I'm a die-hard 1Password fan. 1Password is still my go-to due to it's OS Agnostic approach, but I can see a day when the Keychain App could be a worthy competitor - particularly for those of us heavily invested in the Apple eco-system.

There is some fears using 2FA but since I have multiple Apple devices those fears are long gone.

And with Recovery Contact it now is almost impossible to get locked out of your devices again.
There is a fresh case of someone’s account gets a new recovery phone number he doesn’t recognise and bam. His account gets disabled, just like that. 2FA is extremely unfriendly to users who only has one apple device, be it iPhone or iPad or Mac.

Password managers are really helpful, but it is a terrible idea to store them on iCloud or any other service.

If there is one thing that you should self host - it is your password db.
Exactly! Passwords don't belong in the cloud, I am using Safe+ on my iOS devices and my Mac (it syncs perfectrly using WiFi).

I'm a big fan of Strongbox on both macOS and iOS.
Then moving them between devices is going to be difficult, If even possible at all. I dunno. iCloud Keychain don’t have any other easy password migration option other than from a backup.

Good but a simple update, still no match for 1Password.
You know I decided about 1 1/2 years ago to try 1Password and by far the best decision I have made in a while. I try not to use the same user name on sites or apps so I’ll have it make up a 8-15 character username and depending on the website some up to 30 character passwords and I save those in both 1Password and on my iCloud Keychain. Again no ties to the company 1Password just a very happy customer.

One has to ask themselves - why why every effing year Apple has to update the OS when most of us haven't even gotten to know Big Sur ? This is why I HATE Apple of today compared to the Apple of the Jobs era (2000-2011). at least with Tiger or Leopard you had those for at least 2-4 years before an update, but with Apple of today under Commissar Cook, it seems they don't care about the users. DISGRACE.

I don’t yet see how this will replace third party Authenticators with built in iOS apps and watch, plus all the other benefits?

I also read an article that said keychain is not as secure as we are led to believe. Still better off with third party solutions - with research!

what about Enpass? Is really storing it in iCloud that bad for syncing?

Wait, it has built in support for code generators for 2fa? That's kinda neat, and it would be backed up together to icloud, right? Less things to worry about with external generators.

Way back before iCloud Keychain, you used to be able to export and import your Apple Keychain data! Then they took that away... and now they're finally giving it back, apparently.

But still - I'm gonna stick with Bitwarden. The Keychain has been lagging behind the others for so long, just because it's finally gaining some of the features is not really a good argument for moving back.

"Use Apple Keychain! It sucks less than it used to!"

Import and export is good, I’ve been manually moving passwords as i go over to 1Password. 1Password isn’t as well integrated as keychain but it does mean I can use it on all my non iOS devices including my Ubuntu dev vm and store the MFA tokens.

Yes, we know about that. It looks like preferences will be faster for many people, unless one uses keyboard shortcuts with apps like Alfred.
A dedicated app is always faster than a preference pane you have to navigate to first.

I had 1Password however I moved everything back to Keychain when my subscription ended this year. Just the idea of having everything integrated in iCloud except all of my passwords didn’t make sense to me.

Keychain is free and works OK, I don’t really mind the trade-offs even though they are annoying: it doesn’t always offer offer the auto fill, password generation is more of a workaround than a useful feature and some place don’t accept the standard Keychain password formula which you can’t change (I do this manually based on what’s generated by adding/removing characters).

Great to see Keychain is getting these much-needed updates.

I’ve only read the summary you quoted, but it looks like he only had the old Two Step Verification enabled and not 2FA.

Two step verification was upgraded automatically after 2FA is introduced. No more 2 step verification for Apple ID. It’s just that for most people, the process still takes “two steps” so they mistake it as two step verification.

I have jumped from 1password to this new apple function now :)
My secure notes in 1password are now in notes as a secure note.

also I have jumped Bear for Notes now also with the new notes features.

and soon with iCloud+ when you can use your own domain I’ll also jump from Microsoft 365 to iCloud all the way.

damn…. Apple owns my ass ;)

True, but it’s two different products. 1password are not only a password keeper anymore it’s so much more.

if you use / combine all of apples softwares then you have 1password.
I’m jumping over to apple all the way. Why you might ask? It’s simple I love the integration etc.
