I really don't understand why the redesign was so hated upon, nobody was forced to use it and it's not like there was not an option to switch back from it. 🤔
There were some aspects you could not revert such as the tabs being disconnected from the website.

Having to click the side bar button then click again for bookmarks in the new Safari is also very annoying.

I know its only one extra click but when your using it all day, its very annoying.

Please sort it out Apple :(
I have the same frustrations.

next thing they're going to be designing by focus groups and the race to the bottom will be upon us. they will be just like microsft or google. i say have some balls. the safari changes were a big improvement.

I came here to say "Thank goodness!" because I have been closing the wrong tab for weeks. The problem was that the coloring wasn't consistent and in the past, darker meant "in the background." However, I just downloaded 12.0.1, and clicked on Compact mode to compare after reading some of these comments, because I actually do like the coloring in compact mode... and THEY FIXED IT! Now the active tab enlarges and is very obvious. Ok... keeping this on.

I like the new Safari. Will there be a way to keep it? Would be great if customization is available.

They probably looked at the data on how many users on iOS and iPadOS 15 and Monterey beta reverted Safari (or reverted as much as was possible) to the previous design.

Underwhelmed with the new macbooks?
Did you even see the Macbook release?

Wtf is wrong with some people lol that release is INSANE
yes, i saw it — they are ugly af.

they are thicker and heavier than previous ones. that hinge looks awful in the side view.

they have the notch, which doesn't bother me too much, but the least they could do is flush the menu bar with it.

option-wise they are the same, sans the processor and ram. it still costs a butt load to add some sufficient storage. the iphone now supports up to 1tb, yet the mbp still starts at 512.

so, to answer your question — wtf is wrong with you?

You’re not losing screen real estate compared to the old models. The notch (and menubar) provide an extra 72 pixels. The remaining screen (minus the 72 pixels) remains at 16:10 and the same effective resolution.

Good news. Even better news that they actually listen to their customers - that's how you maintain loyalty.

aha aha, and why couldn't the two flush?..

Disappointed in apple not sticking to their guns. I liked the new design. The ones who shout the loudest are normally the vocal minority.
It's not about shouting. It's about legitimate usability issues. This was the right path. The "new" design was exactly opposite good (and well-studied) design concepts.

I don't like the compact mode but I don't understand what's wrong with the pill-like tabs in the current version available for Big Sur?
Because they weren't connected to the content, breaking the metaphor of tabs entirely. They weren't "pill-like" tabs, they were buttons that were hard to distinguish context and state. Worse in every way except for "looking cool".

I feel like the only person that has liked everything they did with Safari, both on Mac with that design and on iOS with the address bar dropped to the bottom of the screen. Does this also rollback the way the nav bar inherits colors from the web page?
Your not the only one.

wait, are you saying that the unevenness between the two is where the 72px lie?

I’m not sure what you mean by “unevenness.” It looks like the menubar extends a little beyond the 72px (probably to whatever the height already is in Monterey). Are you saying you want the menubar to be exactly 72px?

i'm talking about this:

they couldn't have made the menu bar shorter by however many pixels that would be?! i know that it's a bit ocd, but a lot of apple users are! :)

I think a straight cutoff to make it flush would actually look worse. (It’s just a personal opinion.) The way they‘ve done it, the menubar envelops the notch, and the menubar is still a single, non-bisected strip.

I like current Safari on both Mac and iPhone but my god it's confusing as to which tab is active.

I mean, they definitely must have prototyped it and come to the conclusion that it looked better with it not being flush.
