Fortunately, my USB C hub still works perfectly in Monterey or I'd be livid right now cuz this thing only has two ports. o_O
Yeah. My MacBook Pro is the lower end one and only has two USB-C ports on the same side. Thankfully my cheap hub bought from Officeworks works (puns intended) throughout the beta and official Monterey release.

There were multiple reports of hub failure in the beta releases. Is it just me or does it look like Apple is forcing customers to buy a new machine?
It would be a nice burn if one of those $6000 16” MacBook Pro has the same issue using USB hubs lol.

But how is it "the future" when they've just released laptops which bring back other ports, negating the need for adapters? And people are only using USB-A adapters because they have legacy devices and old cables so that's not really the future either.

Breaking usb hub functionality though is obviously terrible.
Them bringing back ports on their new laptops won't magically bring back ports on a computer I bought last year and intend to use for 4 more years. It's funny how companies think they "solved" a problem by releasing new products, but never think of those who bought the previous products not long ago.

This is why I didn’t get the M1 Mac mini. It has fewer ports than I’d like, and I don’t want to spend extra on a hub that may behave flakily or else may lose function with an OS update.

I’d rather spend that extra money and get an M1 Pro Mac mini with more ports, and a case design update too.

Yes, I have the M1 Air with two ports. The adapter plugs into both ports and it works really great. Kind of pricey though: Adapter Thingy

Apple folks probably test `n` number of adapters , and if you have one outside of that - you might get unlucky. Staying in the eco-system - or at least parts from Apple.com is probably safer? Does anyone have malfunctioning components sold from Apple directly?

to Flip the coin I would have figured this would be protocol-based and hard to break.

Good ol' days!

Why does this keep happening on macs?
Catalina on my 2012 mini also has a USB hub issue. The hub works fine when it’s not connected to power (passive hub). If I connected it so it’s a powered hub, Catalina can randomly crash.

Agree. I advise a loose fam/friends circle on Mac/iOS stuff. Told all, iOS 15.1 is cool. But Monterey? No way - stick with Big Sur maybe 'til Dec-Jan, and longer if you're on Intel CPUs - nothing compelling or urgent as far as I can see and most goodies need the M1.

Hey Apple! Screw you and your dongles! Give us Mac with ports.

… Apple releases new MBP 2021 …

Hey Apple! I cannot plug dongles in my new mac!

For me the HUB is cleaner more durable experience except when Apple decides to break the hardware.

In this case the HUBs were working just fine. Apple released software that broke it.

1) Not everyone is rushing out buying laptops with notches....
2) People like myself have monitors as hubs, usb-c connection powers the device, and have keyboards/mice/webcams/security keys attached to the monitor - this breaks it...

People are working from home, they should do better about capturing these bugs..

Not funny. Did Apple put any USB Type A ports in the new MacBook Pros? ADD?

Mine’s still working fine, it’s some brand I never heard of before buying it cheap off Amazon too.
A Hootoo if you’re curious
I haven’t tested my Satechi, maybe I’ll swap them out and test it out

I suspect whatever hubs have been killed by Monterey share the same chipset

I guess that explains why my external hard drives (connected via USB hub) kept disappearing. I'm on Monterey and an Intel 2020 Imac. It is sporadic. Sometimes all is fine and sometimes life... Replicating life.

This seems a power issue, I aide this problem with my HyperDrive 12in1 USB-C because I was using a 60w PD, then I switched to 65W PD and all ports works fine and my MacBook Pro charge fast.
