I've been away from the desk that has hubs on it so don't really have any way of knowing whether this affects me or not, but it's funny that the fix may be telling the OS to "ask for new accessories".

In that: I've had a chronic problem on my MBP with that setting (which I'm pretty sure is the default) where the prompt for a newly-connected device will appear, then almost instantly disappear. I preferred the security of the OS asking, but was reduced, quite literally, to unplugging the device then plugging it back in while rapidly clicking on the area of the screen where I knew the "OK" button was going to appear, in hopes of catching the dialogue for the brief moment it flashed on the screen.

I assume that this isn't a common problem or there would be more widespread complaints, but it persisted through many OS versions on what should be a pretty clean system, and I eventually just resorted to the "allow automatically when unlocked" setting as a workaround.

Happily using Ventura until yesterday, when I upgraded to Sonoma. I have a LG and Dell monitors, both have their own USB Hub. My soundbar which was connected to the LG hub did not show up as a speaker. The keyboard connected to the Dell monitor hub works fine BUT, the external mouse that is connected to another USB port of the same Dell monitor hub did not work. Maybe only one USB ports (out of 2) is working. That is the bug but regardless, what a mess! I have to take out an old bluetooth Trackpad to work.

Since the update my 2018 MacBook Air (Intel) does not connect with my Photos Library on an external Samsung T7 SSD (necessary because of the absurdly pathetic 122GB total usable native storage). Disk Utility cannot repair whatever broke. Frustrated.

Some Mac users who updated to Apple's latest macOS Sonoma 14.4 software release are experiencing connectivity issues with USB hubs and monitors with USB ports, with several reports of mice, keyboards, and other peripherals no longer being detected.

While Apple works on a fix, a handful of users have had some success by changing the setting "Allow accessories to connect" to "Ask for new accessories" under the Security section of System Settings ➝ Privacy & Security.

Have you had a problem connecting peripherals over USB hubs since updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4? Let us know in the comments.

(Thanks, Matt!)

I tried the allow access under privacy and security BUT the allow access check box is not showing up??? I have 14.4 installed? Why is it not there.??.

Anyone have SIP disabled and is still seeing this issue? I've got a USB KVM and it's working without issue, but I have SIP disabled.

Close to throwing out my 16" M3 MBP and my 14" M3 MBP, plus a bunch of other devices and moving to windows entirely. This is absurd!
Oh wait till you get a Windows update that fails, only to find out from Microsoft that did not need it because you did not make a recovery partition. Or something they did not tell you about in the update security update.

Microsoft **** the bed with that update. And the "fix" was hair-raising.

One of the most fundamental functions of an OS and Apple @#cks it up. Tired of channelling Steve Jobs.

I attempted to disable SIP as mentioned elsewhere here. Didn't work. I also changed the device connection permission setting a few times. Seems to have worked with a Kensington TB dock, but not my Dell TB dock. This is going to require an Apple fix. Hopefully soon.

Always one major version back. Then when the next major version is out, I switch to the next one.

Sorry, I just have no time nor patience to be a free beta tester for these trillion dollar corporations, be it Apple or Microsoft…whatever

Unless you absolutely need to be on the latest version, I wholeheartedly suggest you to try the same

At least M$ addresses the issue. Apple doesn't they just ignore it. You know its bad when your regional Apple SE gives up on trying to find answers and just says, "You have to be patient I'm sure they'll patch it soon." Still waiting for Apple to fix the Webkit security issues. Seems like they just don't care.

I have a CalDigit TS4 and experienced a similar issue when I first upgraded to Sonoma 14.4. However, there was a firmware update available for the TS4 and after installing that everything is working just fine. My CalDigit TS3 Plus that I use at an alternative work site works without issue. So my recommendation is to check for firmware updates for your monitors/hubs.
Thanks for your post, it never occurred to me to look for firmware updates for the TS4. After updating the computer, it was running slower than normal on start-up, slow to recognize the various SSDs and sometimes didn’t recognize any of them, including the one I have plugged in directly to the computer. While it wouldn’t recognize the SSDs, it would still indicate that the computer was getting power (I use the TS4 to power the computer).

After updating the TS4’s firmware, the computer has returned to normal. Thanks a lot!

I’ve had random kernel panics since 14.3 through 14.4 on my work MBP M2 Max at least once a day. Replugging my Caldigit TS3+ and clearing nvram would help for a little while. Logitech Brio would occasionally not be detected when doing this which required it to be replugged into the dock.

Just went into the office the other day and plugged into the Kensington dock there and it asked to “Allow”. Came back home and plugged back into the TS3+ and this time it asked to “Allow” it as well. Haven’t had a kernel panic since…

I don't see the big problem here.
Why aren't you all just using wireless products sold by Apple Inc?
Wires are gross

The way they "fix things", it'll probably languish like this until a new version of macOS in the Fall
Meanwhile my hubs are useless, and even the wired keyboard I had plugged into my M2 mini caused a panic eboot. Sigh.
