If Apple is moving to numbering the OS with the year, then why bother with the name? Close your eyes, and tell me the numbers of Mojave, Monterey, Mavericks and Mountain Lion.

The name obscures the numbering. MacOS 26. That is all you need to know.
The name has always been secondary to the number. They started out as internal codenames. People found out about them and liked them, so Apple played them up a bit. But it's still the number that matters.

Tahoe. Interesting if correct. However, I originally thought they would have nominated "Mammoth" because of the big UI redesign. But Lake Tahoe is nice.

"Apple is expected to unveil macOS 26 alongside iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26 during its WWDC 2025 keynote" Ah too many 26's now 🤣.

More translucency, guess everything comes back again just like bell bottoms did... :)

cheers.

So much easier to type with a Dvorak keyboard.
I'm not sure why people are talking of macOS being a bug city these days, I don't see many bugs. The only ones I experience are those Continuity/hand off features where phone calls are not working properly and pasting from the clipboard after copying from the iPhone simply won't work.

I'd also love it if my Mac stopped asking for my password. I mean what is TouchID on there if you're asking me my password all the time?
Try Mail. Set the notification to a smart mailbox. On the next day or two, it will reset to the default Inbox.
Try Console and open a big log file, clicking on "Now" doesn't show the most recent log.
Try closing a tab on the Script Editor while multiple tabs are present with a script, it will crash.
Tried Terminal groups? Couldn't get it to work.
Safari tab groups feature, fortunately, is working fine now.
Voice Control, after using a while, the settings page stopped opening anymore.
This morning, macOS just froze on me, had to do a hard reset.

ymmv.

The trouble is you're then locked in to releasing an OS update every year.
At the same time as approaching the saturation point where customers are sick of that.

That sounds like a great video game!

Since I have used them all, I could name them all really easily with my eyes closed. I mostly remember the numbers more than the name for writing. Speaking is their nick name and the numbers are secondary. It all depends on how people remember things better (number or name).

Mountain Lion 10.8
Mavericks 10.9 (last one to run Shake supported by Apple)
Mojave 10.14 (32-bit App Island)
Monterey 12 (what I am using right now!)

Apple really is running out of ideas. If they really want to drop Intel Mac support, they should just do it and stop hiding behind the pretense of a new OS that no one needs or is even asking for. /rant

I noticed that MacOS always have name every year but never iPhone's iOS.

I find the new number SUCKS. Why not give every Apple products NAMES rather than numbers?

That's why cars and trucks have different NAMES, not just numbers.

They should name it MacOS Tent City and donate a portion of every Mac sale to helping with the state's homeless problem. That would probably have more of an impact than the green initiatives they blather on about at every event.

Still happy with one of my MacMinis still running Catalina, cannot remember what Number it is. If I found out, I'd be wanting to buy new hardware, when it works fine for what I want it for.

Remember the Futurama episode about having the biggest TV? it's like that, people always want the biggest number.

It would be good to have some cool wallpapers with this release... I'm still using one of those galaxy ones... can't even remember what macOS that was... anyone? 🙂

I was hoping for Vasquez Rocks. Vasquez Rocks County Park was the mountainous desert background for outdoor scenes in Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, MacGyver, Bonanza, The Lone Ranger and Twilight Zone. Remember Kirk’s duel with the Gorn? I was there. The Pacific Crest trail crosses through the Vasquez Parks Natural Area Park.
