because that would make sense!

Ah, but on becoming a demi-god you eschew the mere mundane such as post count.....

D

So, we are all reduced to a digital form of comparison in order to feel as if we have somehow earned a place in the universe. What a concept! As for me, I am terminally mediocre on my best days, and proudly to reside in a blissful world of imbecillic incompetence.(hehehe) I admit it is fun to see for example, how well your processor is folding proteins, and a comparison against other processors is at the very least an arbitrary benchmark, but I think that there are a very small number of MR members who post simply to improve their ranking, regardless of their interest or ability to contribute to any certain thread. That being said, does this post get me any closer to becoming a MacRumors DemiGod?

Just give some money and you can be as close as you want.

Yes very good idea ;)

but shot down already because the mods would have to manually update for the contibutors..... either that or they really want to keep it a secret ;)

Proberly right but....then I guess I just have to see in something like 1 year or so when someone reaches 10 000 or I like 5 I do myself  :(

I think it's a good idea - if you're a Mod, demi-God, contributor, whatever, you shouldn't have a rank displayed - you are "above" those with ranks. ;)

Once someone who is a regular member gets to the next level, you'll know. And for now, there are only a select few who are unknowns as it is :D

Hmm... true. But it's taken me a while to get to my rank with both serious and silly posts and although I'll contribute when the system comes back up, part of me would like to have my 'earned' rank rather than a 'paid-for' one... Perhaps I should contribute as a new newbie user... :p

I guess. But for some people, they are here to contribute, engage in good discussions, become educated, educate others, and all that - the majority of people here probably don't even care about their rank or their post counts, and find it irrelevant.

But yes, the rankings are a fun aspect of being a MacRumors member as well, I won't deny that! :)

Yes, there are quite a limited number of members in those positions. It'll happen eventually...

If anything, these larger spans between rankings makes it more meaningful when they are acheived, and it actually seems like more of an accomplishment (at least to those who put a lot of value in their ranking I suppose...)

You could always ask to not have "Contributor" status added to your name when you contribute - don't know if there's any rules to that though, or if that somewhat defeats the purpose...

I think you could do that but, the contributer won't get an AD-free Front Page, and no access to the private forum. All these "goodies" are due to the status you have.

EDIT:

Here's a link (post #7)

Well, yes... but then you don't get the benefits of contribution... as the ad-free page and private forums rely on your forum status.

Maybe adding a 'contributor/(Demi-)God' line under the location -in the left user ID, tar, IM space- would be more easy?

edit: And make it bold and flash colours so that people will notice it ;)

Yes, but people here know who you are - and we don't care about your rank ;)

Besides, if anyone is really concerned, they can look up your post count in your profile.

one of the reasons post count (the actual number) was removed from under the member name. It seemed to contribute more to actually keeping track of your post count and spamming in general.

D

That's one of the reasons I stopped visiting Spymac. Apart from the drab monotonous tone of the site in general, with it's few splashes of gaudy colors, the post counts under Spymac avatars causes a lot of spamming and 1 sentence answers, or in most cases, that stupid smoking smilie.
