one of the reasons post count (the actual number) was removed from under the member name. It seemed to contribute more to actually keeping track of your post count and spamming in general.

I can imagine. When I set up a forum a year or so back, it was one of the first things I removed too simply to avoid the one word/one smiley answers people gave just to make themselves look good.

I suppose that as a 'demi-deity', it's obvious enough that you have a 'commitment' to the community spirit here which is what makes MR the fun place that it is and encourages posting in the first place.

As I said before, I think a lot of people on this Forum don't care about post count, although the rankings are fun of course. I think they come here to help and to be helped, and be part of a great network of people. I've checked out the other Mac-related Forums, and this is by far my favorite. Great community, and <shameless brown-nosing> excellent Mods. ;) Seriously, though, I'm impressed with what a tight ship they run here - it makes the experience more enjoyable knowing that people who spam, swear, insult, etc. are simply not tolerated.

I agree we have great mods! :) Best mac forums out there!

Hmm, I was initially looking forward to hitting 50,000 posts (or whatever the # is!) so I could be a 970, but now perhaps a more interesting ranking will be the one past that, and seeing "Macrumors x86" below my name.. ;)

Hmmm..........yeah  :D

wander if when people hit the G4, it'll go 7400, 7410, 7450, 7455, 7455A, 7455B, 7447, 7447A, 7447B, 970, 970FX, pentium M :S

Regardless, there's defnitely going to be a lot of rankings to go around, I don't think Arn + Co. need to worry about running out of them for a few more decades - especially if they are at 5000+ post increments... ;)

yeah i think there are plenty of processors to go around, not to mention that we have to get someone past 601 still and at this rate it will be awhile before that even happens

Yep - I think we'll be in this for the longhaul... The way I look at it, I have one more ranking to acheive in the relatively near future (601), and after that, I'll just post as I normally do, and perhaps in a few years I'll see a new ranking... ;)

Agreed...it'll be a while before anyone finds out what the higher rankings are. I won't, at least not until I decide not to renew my contributor status.

Yah, but it keeps things fun. It wouldn't be any fun if anyone could be a G5 after a reasonable amount of posts. It's what will ultimately separate the true, long-standing, dedicated MacRumors members who will support this site for years to come, from the newbies who simply up their post count to get a 'tar and then give up after realizing they'll need 10,000 posts to rank as high as some of the regulars here. ;)

Well, I'm just working on being a Quadra. I thought it was at 2,500 posts, but apparently not. 2509 and counting.

edit: Dang! I thought 2510 would be the one!

If Mr. Anderson would get rid of the mod and the demi-god status (only title wise), what would his ranking be? 20,000+ posts...

This has already been discussed, and we're not sure. ;) The guess is after the 601 rank @ 5000 posts, the next rank will not occur until 10,000 posts, since members such as jefhatfield are well above 7000 posts and are still 601s. Whether future ranks will occur at 5000 post increments or not is anyone's guess (well except Arn/The Mods, they probably know... ;))

Regardless, after the 601 processor, technically there was the 603e processor, followed by the 604e/604ev processors. After that came the 750s and then the 7400s, (I might be missing a few minor ones), but it's anyone's guess how granular Arn +Co. will make the rankings, as technically there are quite a few flavors of each of those chips.

So to answer your question, no one knows what Mr. Anderson would be, but there's a good chance he could be a G3 (750 series), which is quite impressive.

He's not a G3. I will say no more ;)

And all the mods in the special mod forums are like, "haha, we fooled them!" and then laughing because there IS NOTHING AFTER 601! HAHA! IT WAS ALL A JOKE! wow, I need to go to bed...

Perhaps the second-to-last cutoff is a googol, and the final cutoff is a googolplex. Which means Mr. Anderson would need more posts than the number of atoms in the universe to attain the last rank. How many Macintosh rumors would it take to keep up the discussion until then?

That's just evil Doctor Q, did you guys set this up this way just to torment him? ;)

So, judging from these posts, perhaps rankings will not go up in 5000 post increments - but what then? Logarithmically? Exponentially?

Well, personally I'm fine with you Mods keeping that your little secret - I think it's fun - we'll find out when we find out, and it'll all be good. ;)

I agree that the secret is fun, however at some point the distance between titles vs. the speed with which the tecnology is moving is going to have to be modified. Already we have finished G5 production (perhaps some updates, but no really new products based on this platform due to the Intel switch), and yet no one is even close to these standings, not even in G4 territory.

I think at some point the structure has to be revamped to bump a few proc decades and get into a more current setup. Once someone is a high G4 or a G5, I wouldn't be surprised if that ranking stuck for 10,000 posts!

Quite true, but keep in mind as well that it depends how granular they decide to get with the different processor types. Being that we've seen "rare" processors like the 65832 and 68010 (whihc albeit only exist for 5 posts!) I'm thinking that we'll probably see not just single G4 and G5 rankings (i.e. 7400 and 970) but instead, 7400, 7410, 7450, 7455, 7455A, 7455B, etc. - who knows! It'll all be part of the fun. :)

It is an interesting game that we're forced to play. It's just one of those things about this forum that *most* people just accept. Unlike other forums that hand out avatars for nothing, MR makes you become a serious member of the community. (It's a ploy to get you hooked!) I didn't even really think about my post count until I hit 1,000 (last summer) even though my member ID number is 540! (Takes me long enough, no?)

Now, I'm pretty excited to move up a level (or two). But it will happen when it happens. ;)

I completely understand. It is really too bad that some of the wit put in place by our lovely staff  is missed because it only survives for 5 posts (in your example). I know sometimes I have a different thread open in a each tab, running quite a few and after you read through you respond to each (example) and by the time you are done and update your CP with subscriptions, you might have posted 6 replies, completely gapping the proc update :(

I hope that they keep the same idea going to the G4 and G5 procs, having the ranking stick for as long (relatively) as the proc did in the market. A few posts here and there for uncommon procs, and the good ones sit forever and ever, neat idea.

I ran a forum on my site for a little while and I based rankings off of the Roman Empire, myself being Caesar just because I could. I like it, but it really didn't fit in with anything on the site....so I will concede this is far far better.

I agree, I think it's a cool premise. That being said, how long was the 601 around for in relation to the previous chips? Does it warrant 500-post lifespans for the previous chips (with the 68040 being 1000), while the 601 gets a 5000(?) post lifespan?[/QUOTE]

That's a cool idea too. :) What was the Forum about? Or just general stuff?

What labels are ranks?

Are Moderator, Contributor, etc. considered rankings?

Are the rankings only newbie, member, regular, and the processor numbers or is there something else besides those that also represents a rank?
