It's not surprising to see that for almost every opinion here, somebody else has the opposite opinion.

Overall design and layout = good / bad
Looks = up-to-date / out-of-date
Colors = good / bad
Width = OK / too narrow
White space = good / bad
Performance = better / worse
Lack of positive/negative voting = good / bad
Buyer's Guide changes = good / bad
Page 2 becoming blogs = good / bad
Mobile interface = good / bad
"Change" itself = good / bad

All of these issues were reviewed during months of design and testing. It's a given that no web design will please everyone. The bottom line is that the quality of the reporting is what matters most, and that's not going to change.

Only thing that really doesn't work for me is perhaps the most important thing of all and that is how the forum is readable. Instead of stretching out the tables are crunched to the <center> command.

On a 27 in imac that doesn't work well. (safari)

Grunching, but for some reason I'm getting Blue coloured headlines, which are not very readable against the burgundy background:

I'd go as far to say that from a colour harmony standpoint, that burgundy colour now really clashes with the rest of the colour scheme. Maybe worth considering changing it to keep it in line with the rest of the overhaul?

Secondly, the tweet link is always partially obscured by the sidebar for me

Finally, fluid does nothing when I click it - I still get exactly the same behaviour as fixed regardless of how I resize the window on my 1920x1200 display.

I'm using Safari 5.0.4 fwiw

Edit: oops - MacrumorsMinimal was causing the issues - my bad! Looks much better now. Still think that burgundy colour should be changed but everything else is much cleaner looking. Nice work.

Looks Nice...

Looks nice, much less noisy than the previous design. :D
My only gripe is 'variable' apparently means you get few more inches width on screen... instead of as wide as the display will allow. In my case not even as wide as my Laptops screen width (1440px). It's like watching SD on an HD display... :confused:

Edited: "We've also added a "Fluid HD" option for those who want the design to stretch to a super-wide width." Thanks Arn!

I like it.

I like how the ads are placed all to one side and the top. The main page doesn't feel so surrounded by ads.

I'm one of those people who are getting incredibly frustrated with being bombarded by ads.

Great job!

No mobile version?

No, and thank God! I hate always having to manually switch to the full site (if the site even provides the option). If you're still using a phone that can't handle a full web page, it's time to upgrade!

+ 1 now that is gone, i realize how often looked at it. Why? don't know really, maybe to get some instant feedback if something was hated or loved by the community.

I didn't even notice it was missing. I never really found it usefull. It had no context to WHAT people were voting. If you have to read the forum for that context, the voting itself is pointless.

Can you pinky swear that the reporting won't change.

I'm just being a little humorous, I like the new design and in my opinion, change = good (except for Gizmodo/Gawker, now that was/is a train wreck).

I'm not totally sure that I prefer this new design either. It may grow on me over time, but it feels too empty right now. And not necessarily in a good, minimalist type way. Just plain empty.

Um, what's this?:

The auto-mobile detection was broken, but we've fixed it.

There is a auto-mobile version for iPhones and iPods, but you can override it.

Thumbs down. I use a 30 inch monitor and it's only using one third of the available space. Plus it looks like Gizmodo and lifehacker template and I hate what gawker have done their sites.

Exactly.

Were people voting down (or up) the STORY, or the issue behind the story?

There was - and is - no way to tell.

Basically, pretty useless. Fun sometimes, to be sure.

I think I like the new two-column main page design. Admittedly, I almost never paid attention to the goings-on in the left column on the old design, so I don't miss that at all. The extra horizontal space on the right column will allow people in the Programming forum to post subjects with long object names/code calls without messing up the main column.

I'll have to see how it looks on my iMac when I get home, but as for now, good job, arn & Co.!
