Ok, Is my Nike + broken, or my ipod?
Today I ran a full workout without touching the ipod once I had started the run. When I finished (53 minute run on my watch) I pulled out the nano to see how far I had run. it said 37 seconds, 0.06 miles 8:39 mile pace. Hold was on, so I flipped it off (my hold switch works properly). The lock is still displayed on the screen. I flip the hold switch twice and I hold menu & center button and it resets. What is wrong?!?! Is it because I tell it not to play music and I don't put in any headphones? I don't think it could be the cold, because it stayed on the whole time yesterday, which was about 5º cooler than today, plus the ipod it in my shorts under sweat pants. I am very disappointed with this thing as I was hoping to gain some ground today now that I had calibrated it.

not sure what the problem is. here is what i do:

first, i have my nano in a hard clear case. i once had the duo something case and it worked good also.

second, i run with the nano in my hand, whether i'm listening to music or not.

and third, even if i don't have headphones, i let it play music anyways. this one probably doesn't matter, but what does it hurt?

i would advise this for best results. putting in your pocket and stuff, you never know what's happening to it

I don't know how warm it is in Georgia, but here in Saint Louis it is cold. today wind chill was 13. I run with a pair of mittens and some thick gloves over them to block the wind. Also, I put the hold switch on before putting it in my pocket, so no buttons could be pressed. I did step in a puddle with my shoe that the nike + was on, but this was nearly 30 minutes into the run, after I had checked the ipod and tried to reset it with no luck (I got it to reset after the run on the warm bus when I could actually push buttons.).

it was warm today, but it was cold last week. i ran in the teens as well. i run with gloves, and i carry the ipod in my gloves still. yeah, the gloves aren't super thick, and yes, my hands turn to ice, but it's the only gloves i have (and they are running gloves). i wouldn't recommend running in big hunting gloves either

if you stop and stretch or something, then it will pause your run from inactivity

Yeah, it skimped me out of about seven minutes yesterday when I stopped to tie my shoe.
Today it just froze, like the ipod crashed at 37 seconds, and it displayed that on the screen for 50-some minutes until I reset the ipod because it was crashed and unresponsive (lock stayed on screen whether hold was on or off).

OT: Noticed you joined Mac User's Forum, hope you visit often!

yeah, i don't know, maybe the nano just had a bad day i guess. next time try to keep an eye on it if you can.

yeah i joined. hopefully i can get help with bootcamp on my mac pro

I love the idea of the nike+, but the implementation has me ready to give it up. One day my sensor overestimates my milage by a good 10%, and the next day it just cuts in and out during the run. Today was the latter. My 4.5 mile run turned in to 3 miles, according to the nike+. It would stop tranmitting (I'd get the "workout stopped" message), I'd press the center button, it would transmit again for a minute or less, and then it would stop again.

I don't know if it's the sensor, the receiver, the ipod, or what, but it's just so frustrating. The only saving grace is that one of the errors overestimates my milage and the other cuts out milage. ;)

I've had this technology in another nike product (a lace-mounted sensor + watch) for about 5 years with no problem, so I don't see why this can't just work.

give it time. they'll work it out eventually. believe me, i've had my problems as well. but i don't wanna go pay $300 for some GPS thing

I feel pretty lucky, I guess, because I've not had a single problem with it. I only wish the song navigation while jogging was a little easier, but that's a little problem, not a big one.

my problem is that I don't even know what to try to fix. The sensor? The receiver? The ipod (which has been having problems)? The shoe pouch (blocking the signal?)?

My new theory is that the incase sleeve that i use is the problem. It has a flap that is supposed to close over the cable port but that cannot close when the receiver is attached (and thus somewhat covers the receiver).

i guess that could be it, but i wouldn't think so. but just try different things and maybe you'll eventually find the problem

It has been fairly accurate for me. Never lost a whole run. It just 'cheats' me on the treadmill, but that is because I refuse to calibrate for that and mess up the outside running.
I have had success without holding it or putting it in hold. I purchased the Marware pouch and arm/wristband. It has worked great so far <knock on wood>. I sometimes fat finger the iPod to move songs and pause the run - sometimes there is voice notification and other times there is not, but wearing it on my wrist allows me to check from time to time. I can attribute most if not all of my issues to user error.

One thing that is possible is that the battery in the sensors are bad - that is a possibility - has anyone had one go bad on them yet?

I hope you guys get the things to work soon - It is not accurate for me inside (but accurate enough), but since I am doing this for exercise the loss of recordable distance doesn't affect me too much.

Good luck.

Well, my PB for the mile and I'm still 40s behind the leader! Must go faster, faster, faster! For those of us with a varied diet of exercise besides running, these speed challenges are definitely more entertainment.

Besides a brief nano glitch, I've never had a problem with my nike+ kit.

You don't have to ever turn off the sensor. Its meant to stop transmitting automatically when not moving, preserving battery life. If you wear the same shoes when not running, remove the sensor to preserve its battery life.

Re your other problems, QCassidy, they do sound like a faulty transmitter. If I was you I'd take it back to the apple people.

When I run without music, I put the headphones in the jack anyway, because I had an inkling the ipod pauses when it is without headphones. I may well be wrong on that point.

q- i still think you should get a replacement from apple (i assume that's where you bought it)... and then if that one has problems, troubleshoot.

i assume that your sensor is in the pouch the way that it should be. my brother's girlfriend had a pouch and it was in the wrong way for a while and it totally screwed up her results. don't mean to go over something seemingly obvious, but it's not obvious to all.

I have figured out the problem, the faster I run, the longer my strides are, and thus the nike + is basically always going to be wrong for me, unless I re-calibrate it for each each workout based on if I am doing speed or just a long run. My stride also lengthens the longer I run.

thanks for posting the stats so far. you're stepping it up a notch, huh? good job :)

I'm heading north in less than a week, so running might be difficult - but I do have a treadmill. It won't be the same, sadly. And I don't think I'll be able to run as much.

I did go out and run 8.5 miles yesterday - the longest I've run in almost 20 years :D

yeah, not the same on a treadmill.

good for you.

i had a the worst run of the year today. 10.5 miles, but the whole first half i was "prairie doggin it". and not quite as bad on the way back, but pretty bad.

i think i have some kind of stomach virus. i didn't think i was gonna make it back this morning

yeah, that's what I did yesterday. They gave me a new transmitter and receiver. :)

The nike symbol and the :apple: are both right side up, as is the text on the back. I assume that's the right way...

I don't know if it's because of stride length, but the same is true for me.

For example, I ran at a normal pace to calibrate, then ran 3 laps - first one normal pace, second one fast (~5:20 mile pace), third one slow (over 8 min mile pace). The first measured at .24, the second at .22, the third at .28, and the total (due I guess to rounding) was .75. So accurate overall, but only because my total pace was probably close to the pace I'd calibrated at.

To further test, I ran a fast mile. I did it in 5:29, but at that point the sensor thought I'd only gone .91. I had to run ~1750m before it said I'd done a mile, so the time was recorded as 5:59! :( After that I did my 3rd calibration, this time at a fast pace. Ok, so that's fine... but then a normal lap came up as .28. Well, that's no good, so I recalibrated a 4th time, back to a more normal pace.

Basically, after calibrating my first sensor twice and this one 4 times over 400m today, the result is always the same - the sensor is accurate at the speed you calibrate it at, but if you run faster than that pace it underestimates, and if you run slower than that pace it overestimates. This is very disappointing, since the point of it is to measure the speed at which you run. :-/

Good for you! This is great motivation for me too, techinical frustrations aside. I haven't just gone out and run a fast mile on the track for no reason in a long time, and I'm sure I wouldn't have today if not for our challenges. :)

I've had plenty of those days! At least it rarely carries over to the next day, so don't worry. :)

Ok, now that I have been running for a bit (9th week) it is becoming a bit boring going out and running the same distance each time. I was wondering if anyone here is running for a purpose other than weight loss or 'to get in shape' and if they are following a program that leads to a specific purpose.

I have browsed the internet and there are as many plans to train out there as there are variations of a plan. So my question is does anyone prescribe to a particular plan or is it always about just increasing mileage? Anyone care to share tehir plan and purpose of it.

I am currently running about 25-30 miles a week with the long run on the weekend slightly over 7 miles. I try to rest on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My point in running was to lose pounds and even though I haven't really done so (in 9 weeks!) I am hopeful that each week will bring the switch back so my metabolism is back on.

What is your plan and purpose for running?
