Ok, now that I have been running for a bit (9th week) it is becoming a bit boring going out and running the same distance each time. I was wondering if anyone here is running for a purpose other than weight loss or 'to get in shape' and if they are following a program that leads to a specific purpose.

I have browsed the internet and there are as many plans to train out there as there are variations of a plan. So my question is does anyone prescribe to a particular plan or is it always about just increasing mileage? Anyone care to share tehir plan and purpose of it.

I am currently running about 25-30 miles a week with the long run on the weekend slightly over 7 miles. I try to rest on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My point in running was to lose pounds and even though I haven't really done so (in 9 weeks!) I am hopeful that each week will bring the switch back so my metabolism is back on.

What is your plan and purpose for running?

well my purpose is that i'm on the track team. so i guess i'm a little different than most.

but for you, i think you first have to decide between 2 things:

i want to run farther, or
i want to run faster.

you need to decide that first, before you make any plan. since you're already up to 25-30 miles a week, and you still want to lose more weight, i'd say run faster.

if you're bored, just try to go to different places to run

I've been doing the 30-minutes continuous running thing for several weeks now, and I get about 3.5 miles in (8:20/mile or so). I feel like I've hit a bit of a wall in terms of progress, since I'm not getting any faster. Do you have any suggestions for speeding up my pace? Should I be doing some shorter distances (1 mile, for instance) and going for speed? Maybe work in a 45 minute run every once in awhile to improve my endurance?

I'm very new to this jogging thing, so any advice is welcome.

well, it depends on what you wanna do. if you want to try to go faster, then yes, you should try shorter, faster runs. i would try 2 or 2.5 miles at a little bit faster pace, unless you really want some speed, then go down in mileage even further

if you want to go farther, then keep the same pace, but increase the distance (but not by too much) and work your way up.

My reason for running is that I was a cross country and track runner all through high school and college and I still love it. I'm in law school now, and a combination of lack of time and lack of motivation mean that I'm not in the shape I used to be (and would like to be), but I love running and don't see myself every giving it up entirely. Actually, this nike+/macrumors thing is great for my motivation and I find myself running more than I have in a while. :)

If you're interested in speeding up, or just breaking your routine, I recommend starting out with some "pick-ups," which are just short (30 sec to a few minutes) accelerations followed by slow recovery jogs. That's an easier (and more fun) way to start than something like 2 or 3 continuous miles going hard or measured intervals on a track.

Eff'ing hell.

OK, after buying a Nike+ kit that doesn't work, getting a new one (took 10 days through a reseller because they had to confirm that it doesn't work  ), eye and nose medication that gave me severe heartburn, and a total body rash that lasted for 5 days and was total agony, I have finally run using my Nike+ system. :D

It's uncalibrated, and Google Maps is telling me that I ran 7.25 kms rather than 6.84 kms (only a 0.40 km difference), so I'll need to calibrate it. It doesn't matter anyway, since I have no chance of catching anyone. I'm a bit out of shape, I guess.

Oh well.....next month.

yeah, just get going and you'll be fine for next month

haha, well, I've been having quite a few problems with my sensor's accuracy. Even after I got my replacement unit, it was overestimating distances by about 10% after calibration. So I went back to the default settings... and somehow that seems more accurate! It's nearly correct now. I don't know how that's possible unless the track I calibrated on isn't 400m... but who builds non-400m tracks? Oh well... at least my accuracy is getting better (and this new sensor doesn't randomly lose the connection!).

Thanks for the feedback. I ran a 1-mile session today, just to see how fast I could go. My previous 'best' (1st mile of 3 mile workout) was 8:04, today I did 7:11. Man was I tired after those 7 minutes. Seriously sucking wind. But, I guess it sets a new bar for me. I think I'll keep mixing up my workouts like this to try and improve.

Cheers.

He-he... independently of the MR challenges, I've had a goal of my own, and barely, just barely I got my first medal:

some tracks aren't exactly 400m. my school used to be like 405 or so meters. it was an old track. can't remember why it was though. so a full lap was more than 400 meters. but there were markers for the 400

congrats on the improvement! that's a pretty big step up. now you goal for next time should be under 7:00. :)

congrats on the getting goal! :) good job ;) :apple:

Way to go Mitty! I've got a calorie-burning goal going this month, and I'm *barely* on pace (about 40 calories ahead). Here's hoping for my first medal also. I certainly won't be getting any on the MR challenges.

Not necessarily true. If, for example, they set up a challenge that required all members to complete a goal then you could score some harware.

As soon as basket ball ends I'm going to try and run, but with basketball I tried the first week I got my Nike+iPod and it was just to much

Congrats! I set up the exact same goal last month as my first goal.

This month my goal is for 110km in 4 weeks. After that I'm going to aim for 120km in 4 weeks, but eventually I'll hit a wall, and I'm going to have to start extending my runs past 5k.

Hopefully it gets nice out soon, because when I'm on the treadmill I just always want to quit my run, it takes a lot of will power to stay on it for the whole 5k. I find myself looking at the clock nearly ever 30 seconds, it's quite the drag.

my current goal is 145 miles in 4 weeks. I'm 2.5 miles "behind" because of my various problems with the technology, but everything seems to be working correctly now and I'm sure I can make up the miles the nike+ lost. :)

yeah you should be fine. even though i found a while back that the nike site wasn't very accurate in telling you if you were ahead or behind the goal.

last semester my goal was 200 miles in 4 weeks. after 1 week i was over 50 miles, but it said i was way behind my goal. since then i haven't touched the goal section

But come on, that would account for an inaccuracy of less than 1%!!

When I run on the treadmill, I don't use the Nike+. Should I? I really have run more than 11 km in my 1 week. :p

Oh man, this is a blast. Every time I want to stop, I feel like I should keep running so that I beat your asses. :D

that 1% of 400 meters adds up real quick. believe me

why not use it on the treadmill? listen to some music and add to your mileage

FYI - I have been experimenting lately on the treadmill due to the white and slippery stuff on the ground. The nike+ is more accurate if you run toward the front of the treadmill versus the middle or trying to keep up position ;) (why not recalibrate? - because I usually like to run outside and did not want to have to keep recalibrating).

So, Try running up front for better treadmill to mileage matching.

That still does not explain the time travel issue I have noticed - treadmill starts up - runs for 15-20 seconds then I start the nike+ and then later when looking at the times they are the same or the nike+ is ahead of the treadmill...weird - so it is hurting my pace if there is a time issue - but is it a slow clock on the treadmill or a fast on on the iPod? Who knows?
