Hi Benga101,

glad to see that you've gotten yourself a Nike+ kit. i'm sure ziwi will send you an invite to the challenges, so be sure to check for it in your email.

if you want a beginner's challenge, there are plenty that you'll find on the nikeplus.com website. but don't be scared with our challenges. you are on a team in ours, so you're not alone. you can join my team, or the other one if you choose, it's up to you.

but we have a few different team challenges. i hope you enjoy them;)

Should be good - welcome.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the welcome! Typically I decided to start now - then this morning its frozen outside. Oh well :)

Any preference on the team I join? I saw the numbers were out - who wants the unfit lazy one?

hey, just put on a few layers of clothes, and get out there! ;)

you are always welcome to join my group (Twood's) :)

Welcome to all the new members! We're glad to have anyone with a nike+ kit, a nano, and a pair sneakers - plenty of room for everyone of every ability level!

As far as picking teams - everyone is welcome to join any mac team and either twood's team or my team. With the mac challenge, everyone just runs for their mac, and the chips fall where they may. ;)

With the TW/QC challenge, however, the goal is to have a competitive challenge, hopefully all the way to the end. As of now, the TW team has 5 more people, but the milage is working out to be very close. So just keep competitive balance in mind when you select a team - it'll be more fun for everyone that way. :)

Happy trails all!

yeah, the TW/QC challenge is very close in mileage, it has been the whole time. so as long as it's close, just pick whichever you like :) don't worry about which one has more people. ;) the mileage is all that matters

I joined the TW team as he was the first to reply. Looks like we're behind atm though.

Joined all the challenges except the Thanks Giving one. Running for my Mac Mini at home - the MacPro is at work can wait :)

Thanks for all the support. I intend to go out for my first run tomorrow.

Don't put off til tomorrow what you can do today...;)

it is 17 - 12 and the mileage is now tilted to the team with less folks. I still think that the potential to have a quick and large increase in miles is doable.

Is anyone running for training or just running? Do people run everyday? I like to do 4 or 5 days a week and have been doing 5 lately as a prevent defense for the holidays...

good luck on your first run :)

what do you mean by quick and large increase in miles?

how are we looking for the 2250 challenge? (i assume pretty good)

i've stated before that i am on the track team at my university. i was on the cross-country team, but i've used up my 4 years of that, so i'm not on that team anymore. i have an internship right now, so i'm not taking any classes.

anyways, i wasn't able to run yesterday b/c of my internship. i left for work at 5:45 am, and i got home at 8:30 pm last night. so therefore i didn't feel like running after that

I mean that if a team with 5 extra folks has those folks go out and all run 3 miles that is a quick and decent mileage upload day...there is power in numbers...If the numbers decide to run it is easier to reach a total or cover more ground than the team where the burden is on fewer to run more...just simple math

I'm doing the 'couch potato to 5K in 8 weeks' training plan. So far, it's VERY easy and I feel my abilities go up with each 'run'. I add a long walk to the end of the training program. Last time out, I went exactly 2.5 miles. as the program increases, so will the mileage. I run 3 times a week right now, but will increase to every other day once I'm done with this training program.

I'm running for weight loss and health reasons. But one day, who knows? I may actually run in a real 5 or 10K run just to say that I done did it! (ya'll):p

but there there is no "if's" in math. all of that is based on "what if". yeah, i could go run 50 miles tomorrow, but in reality that's not gonna happen. i just think it's funny that the top guys are all against me (or so it seems, besides Rick that is. just seems like ya'll are out to get me)

anyways, i'm in a lot of other challenges also, including this one that's speed vs distance. i mean, don't get me wrong, these macrumors challenges get me going, but this new challenge is interesting. and this girl is killing me in it. last week she ran like 107 miles, and this week 81. i managed to get 45 miles in this week, which is really good considering my ankle. and i've averaged 6'50" a mile also (where the speed part of the challenge comes in), but i'm still no match for her 81 miles.

glad your training is going well! keep it up ;) you'll get that race in no time :)

 off your medication?????:p:p:p

well, as i recall, me and QC have been going at it whenever he's in the challenges, and me and you went at it in June.......and ziwi took QC's side when i brought up the issue about the uploading thing.....

i know it's no hard feelings or anything, just competition

Is anyone running for training or just running? Do people run everyday?

I am training for a marathon right now. Even when not training for anything in particular, I try to run a decent amount because I've run since I was about 11 years old and just don't know what to do with myself when I don't run. I try to run 7 days a week, but some weeks it's 6 (and this week it's 5, but that's very unusual circumstances!).

there is power in numbers...If the numbers decide to run it is easier to reach a total or cover more ground than the team where the burden is on fewer to run more...just simple math

I agree. Ideally, this challenge would have equal numbers overall as well as equal numbers of "high," "middle," and "low" milage folks. Seems it's hard to make that happen when people choose their own teams, so maybe we could work out some kind of assignment system for future months?

i just think it's funny that the top guys are all against me (or so it seems, besides Rick that is. just seems like ya'll are out to get me)

whoa whoa whoa. This challenge is not personal! At least, I sure as heck have been assuming it's not... if it is, then I think I'm the one losing the popularity contest here. ;)

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that it's "my" team against "your" team is just arbitrary. The only point was to have two hopefully equal teams, and the starting point for that "hopefully equal" was to split up the two guys who have most often been at the top of monthly challenges. Maybe next month we should just call it "team one" and "team two," or "team PPC" vs. "team intel" or something...

you might not call it personal, but, clearly you are trying to win the challenges, correct? and every time it was you and me at the top going at it (or most of the time). and in June it was me and 748's. so of course, you want to win, and i want to win, so therefore it is somewhat personal (we can have an intellectual argument about it if you want). clearly that's why 748's joined you. if he was on my team, and you had 5 extra than me, my team would still be winning, by a lot.

and ziwi didn't like that i walked with my sensor, in fact, you didn't either. so that's most likely why he joined your team.

so again, you could say it's not personal, but in some ways, you can't avoid it.

but it doesn't matter. i was just stating the fact, not meaning to start an argument or anything. it's just the nature of competition. i get the same way sometimes

Wow. I'm sorry you feel that way. It's "personal" in the sense that we all want to win, but it's not "personal" in that you should feel like the "top runners are ganging up" on you, or I should feel disliked because a greater number of runners have joined you.

I think you're assuming a lot about why people joined one team or the other. I don't know why desmonator, ziwi, or anyone else joined one team or the other, and neither do you. Everyone has to be on one or the other, right? So should I be offended that rick, beholland, or any of your other 16 teammates chose you instead of me?

My belief, and hope, is that people chose the teams they did because they saw the names and numbers on each team and picked so as to keep a competitive balance. I just don't think this challenge is a commentary on our (your and my) respective popularity...

The only thing personal with these challenges is me!
I'm always going up against myself.
I've got things to achieve.
November was always going to be a big month for me (even before the teams thing happened)

If all your assumptions were any where near correct (which, in my case, not even close), it's a huge compliment to you, not a conspiracy;)

Must be tough trying to fit running into your new lifestyle. A lot of us have been working for years, so have a developed routine for fitting in running between work and family life.

In other news.............My hard work is paying off. Finally cracked 60 minutes for 10KM, 59:07 @5:53 per KM. A year ago running 10KM was a fantasy (I couldn't run out of sight on a dark night, even 5 KM was a fantasy). My career average is down to 7:00 per KM down from 11ty billion.

well, maybe it's just me. but being a competitive athlete, i know how some people act/react to certain things or certain people. maybe i'm wrong here. maybe i'm right. either way, it's not a big deal.

but i'm not sure if you can tell how many is on which team before you join. (well, i didn't have a choice on which to join :) ) and beholland is my girlfriend, so she didn't have a choice either ;)

on another note, when are you running your marathon?

i'm curious then, why did you join QC? are you sure it's not b/c of June? (whether it is or isn't, it's not a big deal, i'm not mad or anything) i mean, it could be that you don't like the kind of person i am, or at least, the person you think i am.

anyways, enough of that. i was just stating what was on my mind. i just find it funny the top guys all on the other team. some i've beaten in the past, that's all.

congrats on your 10K time! keep up the good work. pretty soon you'll be under 50 min ;)

VERY nice! I'm starting where you were a year ago. I'm struggling to train up to a 5K without needing an airlift to the hospital!! At this point, I'll nail 5k, then alternate working on speed and distance up to 10K. I'm 'running' around 12 min/mi which is more like walking, but hey, ya gotta start someplace!!:p

As for the team issue....I can't recall if I could see the roster before I joined or if it was just the trash talk, but I DID know that QC had fewer numbers and I joined that team simply to make the number of runners more equitable. I had/have NO idea who is on what team that runs 100's of miles or no miles. I went SIMPLY on number of members.

(heck, for that matter. look at my RunForYourMac team!! I'm one of 3 iMac'ers and the 3rd person has logged ZERO miles so far!! Should I be offended??:D But then again, I'm DOMINATING the iMac'ers, so I'm a powerhouse!!! lol)

The 1000 mile journey starts with the first step......(or something like that).

You just got to keep doing it.
Once I got a habit of running going it was hard to stop.
The early weeks felt like I was going to die.

Start small and keep building. I'm living proof it will happen:p

Here's a link to free running mixes. Not to everyones liking but they have helped me along. I don't use them daily, now and again.

GO YOU POWERHOUSE:D

Even though I won't be running again until at least March (winter rock climbing season is just too delicious to pass up!) I'm excited to see what the outcome of this month's challenge is going to be.

Physical fitness is a very important aspect of overall health that's all too overlooked these days. I hope they have a touch-ready version of Nike+ when the spring rolls around.

Keep on running!

Dude, I love your work. You crack me up.:D:D:D
First off, I'm a zen sort of guy. It's me against myself.

June was very interesting for me.
I exceeded my physical limits.
I kept running through the pain to see where I'd go with it or where it took me.
With one day to go I knew I had had enough so I stopped.
I could have managed a couple of more KM's that last day and won.
Winning is not a priority for me.
I had got what I wanted out of it.

OK. Are you ready for this? I'm going to tell you why I went with QC's and not TW's. Can you handle this? I hope so, it will be tough for you to deal with...................ready?.............I got a coin, heads TW's, tails QC's. You know the rest:p:p:p

Did it! Didn't go that far or that fast - but I'm just pleased with myself for actually getting out there.

Just got to keep it up now :)

How long does it take for the stats to update on the nike+ site?

Could the teams next month be based on what people have run this month? That way there should be more even numbers.

Good Work. Distance or speed don't matter, the biggest hurdle is getting out and doing the first run. Make sure you do run number 2, then 3 etc.

My stats can take between a few minutes and an hour to appear.

Could be difficult making teams based on this months stats.
People come and go.
Others have different objectives each month.
See what happens

Keep on rollin'

and ziwi didn't like that i walked with my sensor, in fact, you didn't either. so that's most likely why he joined your team.

I just thought it was petty of someone who could run to pad stats with walking. If all they can do is walk or if they are beginners fine, but if you are at the top of your game and padding stats by walking then it seems petty - that was my comment. That plus the fact I was working my @$$ off and never getting close to winning and knowing I wasn't scoring the 'walking' when others were...it got under my skin. For myself - I turn the sensor on after warm up and turn it off for cool down - I am trying to get my lifetime time per mile to be informative and realistic for me - this way when I look at the charts I can see my improvement in time over time - I think it helps make the nike+ more of a tool when you record your training.

May be to difficult to 'make' teams as folks do come and go and most months only a few are actually consistent in mileage. It seems that the one challenge that was made in fun is becoming a bit too personal - so I will probably steer away from that again. Notice that there is little contention on the run for your Mac challenge. Ultimately, it is about everyone improving their health and having fun. So let's all do it.
