cheating is doing basically anything to give you an advantage over others. an unfair advantage, and holding back how many miles your doing is one of them, in my opinion. if all i do is upload every so often, but watch what everyone else is doing, i know how much i need to run to win, while no one else knows that.

(My emphasis.)

Defining "cheating" as "doing something that gives an unfair advantage" just begs the question of what is "unfair." In my opinion there's absolutely nothing unfair about uploading milage every few days (that just happens to be how often I have to recharge my ipod).

I think what's being referred to here is the following:

You're number 2 in a challenge. The number 1 guy is out front by ten miles. Up front guy averages 5 miles a day. You're about the same. You deliberately STOP uploading data and increase to 7 miles a day. Frontrunner uploads daily and sees his lead increase by comfortable margin, and drops to 3 miles a day.

At the last second, you upload ALL your data and blow past the other guy (who admittedly slacked off). You win by a longshot. Subterfuge at it's finest.

The implication here is that the challenge SHOULD be a fairly honest exchange of info. It's not like playing poker...bluffing etc. and sandbagging aren't really the 'right' way to win.

If you have a legit reason for not uploading, fine. But otherwise, show your cards after each run (if possible) to give everyone a chance to up their game and in the end, EVERYONE increases their skills.

IMHO, a challenge means everyone gives 100%. DELIBERATE sandbagging someone is a cheap shot. Maybe not cheating, but it's a cheap shot. If you can't win on your OWN merits, why bother in the first place??

How do you judge the time - Looking at you watch every 30 seconds to see if you should be running or walking doesn't seem like the best solution when you should be out for 20 minutes. Is there any way to get the iPod to beep or otherwise tell you the time in 30 second intervals?

I don't know of a way to make your iPod beep. I simply look at the time on the iPod itself and use that as a guide. I carry it in my hand, so it's not a problem. I tend to look at it to gauge when my pace is too fast etc.

As for the couch-to-5K program. Up through week 3, keeping track of your progress is very easy. Starting in week 4, though, it might get interesting as it starts mixing up the runs and walks with differing times for each. I may actually have to bring a cheat-sheet with me so I don't forget what comes next. Tonight I accidently did a 90-second-run-then-90-second-walk segment twice.....and what was I thinking about when I screwed it up? YOUR post asking about how you keep track of the time!! :p Oh well!!

Get out there, and remember: Beat the pavement like it owes you money!:D

Here's a link to free running mixes. Not to everyones liking but they have helped me along. I don't use them daily, now and again.
http://www.djsteveboy.com/mixes.html

GO YOU POWERHOUSE:D

Thanks for the link. I checked them out the other day at work, and will get a few of their mixes as soon as I figure out what my running=BPM is.:D

I love trance/techno mixes to run to. Simultaneously mind numbing AND distracting at the same time!

thanks for the example. it is what i was trying to say.

................and will get a few of their mixes as soon as I figure out what my running=BPM is.:D.................

I've no idea what my running BPM is. I randomly select tracks. Though I don't use anything over 170BPM. Starts getting to frantic for me. Tracks with BPM's 130 to 170 suit me best.

I think what's being referred to here is the following:..

I agree that would be underhanded. But in the past I've been accused of being underhanded or in fact outright "cheating" for not uploading miles every day, even when I've explained that it's simply more convenient to recharge every couple of days.

I don't know of a way to make your iPod beep.

Yet another reason I wish nike would make a watch compatible with the sensor in the absence of an ipod. It'll never happen because it would piss apple off too much, but I'd much rather run with just the sensor and a watch most days. A real running watch is so much more useful than a nano!

but i don't see that as i real reason not to upload. only takes a second, and if you don't want to charge your ipod, then just eject it after you upload. it's not like you aren't online.

i will agree with you here. there was a rumor that they were going to release a watch like that. i guess they still could

I've gone through my reasons for uploading every few days rather than every day when we've had this debate in the past. I've also pointed out that my milage is quite consistent, so it's hardly like I'm taking anyone by surprise.

Sorry if my reasons are not satisfactory to you, but IMO the way I do it is fair, it's the way I normally use my ipod, and it's not going to change.

And once again, I'm hardly the only one who does this. In fact, of the top runners this month, every single one has had days with considerable jumps that can only be explained by uploading more than one day at once.

i will agree with you here. there was a rumor that they were going to release a watch like that. i guess they still could

I think apple would be very displeased with that. Lots of people would stop buying nanos and just use the watch (including me). I don't think nike wants to make apple angry like that.

If I may interject. I am online alot and it is not always from the Mac. Another issue would be with the stop gap mini in my possession as an example - the hard drive is so small that I tend to store the itunes library and larger folders on the external hard drive - I am not a big fan of turning it on for a start up and shut down (as I am sure they all only have so many in them). So that would be another reason that some do not get it uploaded each day.

In other news...;) Ran my first 5K in 22 years (last one in H.S.) and while it was not as good as Thursday (My hammy's still aching from that) it was good enough to place me 28th out of 205 and I was 2nd in my age class...not too bad - I may just do more. Felt like I left too much out there though - and forgot the basic items like saving time not starting in the back of the pack and weaving through them all. It was 30 degrees as well, but it was apparently a nice turnout for the event. Was not the happiest with the final time, but surprised with the result.

I know I would have done better if I was training for it like one is supposed to - resting prior to race - decreased mileage in t he week before, but these challenges...boy oh, boy :) - You guys are cracking the whip on me...;)

One more thing...without these challenges and the great group we have here I do not know if I would have been motivated to run the last 11 months - so a quick 'thanks' to everyone for the motivation.

Thanks for bringing that up ziwi. You bring up a point that I've made in the past (my nano is sick and rightly or wrongly I think that only plugging it in when necessary may help extend its lifespan). I'm just not going to go through the entire litany of reasons for the way I upload again because a) I've done so in the past, and b) I don't think the way I do these challenges is even remotely unfair.

In other news...;) Ran my first 5K in 22 years ... it was good enough to place me 28th out of 205 and I was 2nd in my age class...

Wow, that's fantastic!! Don't worry about the time being not quite what you'd hoped. Running back-to-back 5ks, racing in 30 weather, and starting at the back of a 200 person pack do not really make for ideal PR racing conditions.

Almost any competitive runner will tell you that it's the place that matters because what you're trying to do out there is compete against other people. And regardless of the results, actually getting out there and racing is really something to be proud of. As someone who used to race all the time and rarely does so anymore, I mean that sincerely because I know how hard it is. Congratulations!!

...........Sorry if my reasons are not satisfactory to you, but IMO the way I do it is fair, it's the way I normally use my ipod, and it's not going to change.........

Mate, keep doing it how you want.
There is nothing wrong with it.

Twood has set a few precedents on these challenges, he can't dictate how he wants these challenges to be run.
If it doesn't fit with his need to win, it's not acceptable.
Errrr, no.

I might try a one upload 10 minutes before the end of a future challenge:D:D:D
That would cause an uproar:p:p:p

Ziwi, good work on the 5k run.
It's giving me motivation to do similar.
Thanks!

well, usually it's me and you at the top, so therefore, it means more to me than others, as far as what you do. and even now, the others at the top are on your team, so again, it matters more to me than others in this challenge. but i think it's funny that you and ziwi try to make me feel bad that i've walked in the past, yet you continue to do things that i don't approve of. why should i change my ways if you're not willing to change yours?

you might be right about the watch, but i did see a rumor website about it. it was from January of this year though, so maybe they cancelled it?

well, you can upload from any computer if it's windows formatted, and any mac if it's mac formatted. and you don't even have to sync with your library to upload your miles.

congrats on your 5k. like QC said, don't worry about your time. there were many factors that come into play with your overall time. just keep at it, and eventually you'll have to not let these challenges get the best of you. (i have to do the same)

Mate, keep doing it how you want.

what? what are you trying to say? well, saying things like this is what makes me win. keep doing it, and i'll keep winning

New User!

Well, just thought I'd say that I picked up a Nike+ kit yesterday and have just been for my first run this morning.

I play a bit of non-competitive football (or should I say Soccer?!?) with some work colleagues but that's about it and obviously you're not constantly running around.

Only did 2.5K but I can feel it in my legs now and I don't think I could have gone much further. I've set myself some personal goals which I can track against and I think I've set them so they're stretching but achievable.

Have to say I'm pleased I picked up the kit and I can see it being the motivation I need.

As it's so close to the end of the November, I won't join the challenges this month, but I'll join in for December.

Send Ziwi a PM with your nike+ name, he will sort it out.
Start off slow. Know your limits and build the runs up.
Don't overdo it too early.

The Nike+ kit gave me the motivation to keep running. Well worth it.
Welcome to macrumors Nike+ Challenges.

...........what? what are you trying to say? well, saying things like this is what makes me win. keep doing it, and i'll keep winning

You can't win this month.
The challenges are all team challenges.
(Except the 5k run and Ziwi aced that one).

One of your teams might win a challenge.
November will acknowledge teams not individuals (except Ziwi's fantastic 5k).

I love team events, I hope we have more team challenges.

It's hard to believe that the month is almost over, but I can't wait to go run for Cupid. After December I'll have to stop using my iPod daily because indoor track will start and then I'll only use it every once in awhile. That's why next month I'm going to push myself. ;) BTW Team Cupid will dominate, trust me. :)

I agree. Team Cupid will be a veritable juggernaut!! I mean, c'mon!! That cute little guy with his bow and arrows? How cool is......

uh.......

....ummmmmm.....

HEY LOOK!!! IT'S ELVIS!!!

glad to have you! :)

like someone else said, ziwi needs either your nike+ user id or your email address to send you an invite to all the challenges. join whichever you like.

that's really good that you've already set yourself goals. that's the first step towards success.

good luck

i can still have the most miles individually if i want. (but i probably won't. last week was for another challenge, and i think i won it :D )

i see why you love team events

sorry to hear that you'll have to stop after December. you've had a nice month so far, and hopefully an even better month in December. good luck to you in indoor track ;)

i think it's funny that you and ziwi try to make me feel bad that i've walked in the past, yet you continue to do things that i don't approve of. why should i change my ways if you're not willing to change yours?

and i'm not trying to compare walking to uploading every 3rd day, it's just the principle of the thing.

It's not the principle of the thing. The two are totally different. It's not a question of each of us doing what the other wants, it's a question of fair play.

and again, it takes under 30 seconds to upload your miles, so it would be no wear and tear on your nano.

And again, it's not the amount of time it takes, it's the process of syncing and then powering back down (which my nano periodically refuses to do).

Look, it's not like my syncing every couple of days negatively impacts you. You know how much I run. And on days when I go long, I always upload on that day because the nano needs a recharge after a long run. So really, there's nothing that could be taking you by surprise.

you might be right about the watch, but i did see a rumor website about it. it was from January of this year though, so maybe they cancelled it?

Yeah I remember seeing that too, and I was really hopeful for a while, but not so much any more.

i can still have the most miles individually if i want...

You mean you can *compete* for the most miles individually if you want. ;)

yeah they are totally different, but still refer to the same thing, fair play.

no one runs exactly the same amount all the time. and honestly, i don't sit around and add up your miles everyday. and since you're training for a marathon, your training is going to be different.

Yeah I remember seeing that too, and I was really hopeful for a while, but not so much any more.

yeah it would be nice if they released it. there is always a chance though. it took them awhile to release the amp+ watch

You mean you can *compete* for the most miles individually if you want. ;)

technically speaking, yes. but if i really wanted to, i know i could. (even though i might regret it later). i did run over 80 miles last week, just to win a different challenge. i won't be doing that this week though. it's not in my best interest

well, that's where we disagree. I think one's about fair play and the other isn't.

I could do 100+ in a week if I really had to. But I have a training plan and a busy life, and no online challenge could possibly be worth my compromising those things to the degree that it would take to run 100+ miles in a week.

If both of us decided to go completely all out? I have no idea who would win. But it would be a really, really bad idea.
