Not for ME

I would love to have one but the price is still too high for what it dose. Maybe it it were more like a netbook than a iphone

Don't suppose either of the netbooks/notebooks above will work well as a hackintosh...theoretically of course.;) ...just kidding, no one get worked up I'm not trying to start another debate on the topic.

There is a Dell mini, older model still being sold though, that supposedly works 110% with snow leopard.

As a developer with an iPhone 3G, I'm feeling pretty burned with Apple's closed development and restrictive app store model, and I have zero interest in investing time/effort in Objective-C which Apple forces on developers to lock them in.

So, no iPad for me, and I'd been wanting an Apple tablet for some time now. I'm sure it'll be a fine product. My girlfriend already has an Android phone which is pretty nice, and I'll be looking to pick one up myself this summer. I won't rule an iPad out for the future, but I'm definitely waiting to see what the alternatives look like.

Actually, I think mine would (Aspire One AOD250). But right now it's too much of a hassle (I don't have an external DVD drive for it) and really all I need is the ability to go online on campus, ActiveX (i.e. IE ;)) for some elearning sites and MS Office for Windows. My main computer is still a late 2006 mini with2 GB RAM and a 7200 rpm, 320 GB HDD, running Snow Leo.
Also, yeah, I'm doing the "laid off, eff it, might as well go back to school" thing, too.

Dell mini 9 and 10.

A few thoughts on being an early adopter:
1. I completely realize that Apple will make a better v2 and then a v3 the year after that and so on. That's the nature of the beast. You can say the same thing with every PC, Mac, HDTV, automobile, digital camera, etc, etc. At some point you just buy it and understand that you'll replace it. I'm not sure why people are so focused on the fact that Apple upgrades their equipment annually when nearly every company in every industry does the same thing.

I agree that something better is always around the corner. However, the problem I have is that Apple purposely dumbs down their products. This ensures that the next generation will always make a bigger splash. For instance, no camera? Really? It has the physical space for it. It's not that it's not wanted or needed, because I guarantee you will see it in the 2nd or 3rd generation. This type of "dumbing down" does not happen in any other industry or by any corporation though.

Buying an iPad without camera is stupidity

For real... you do not need an iPad. If you are going to have one at least get it with the common sense features... like a video camera!

Otherwise you will be selling yours by the time the new model (with camera) comes.

I am not even getting an iPhone yet unless is fully feature and it seems the new model will be.

The HUGE thing right now is augmented reality, without a video camera any device is literally useless.

So... I have a brain, I use it, I will wait.

Itune Will Be My Light To Ipad

For those who had just updated itunes to 9.1 , Apple had created a very clear guidelines for us, if you already had existing apps that supports IPAD, then you would be able to see

1. IPHONE, IPOD TOUCH, IPAD APPS
2. IPHONE, IPOD TOUCH APPS

The two categories clearly let us know if most of our apps already moved over, and if so, then I will make a move too, I do not want to re-install new apps just to do the same existing stuff.

So you mean...

I will wait until the second generation next year and see if they add camera, drop the prices and other new features. I am not a fool to buy this device just yet.

..that all of us who are getting the first gen 'fools'?

I just do not understand this line of thinking. I also don't understand the constant comparisons between an iPad and Netbook or iPhone OS and Snow Leopard etc. iPad is in a completely different league than the Netbooks. The future is in multi-touch and Apple is taking the first big leap. Other devices (JooJoo, Adam, Slate etc)with similar form factors are coming up but it would all boil down to which device can give you the best _experience_. The form factor and the underlying hardware are just enablers and the real deal is in the software/apps.

I don't see what's the big deal with Netbooks either. The major selling point for Netbooks has to be the price. I played with several Netbooks running WinXP, Win 7 etc and the UI/experience is very ugly with a full fledged desktop OS running on a tiny device. But with the prices of conventional laptops falling drastically from where they were 1,2 and 3 years back and OS boot times getting improved with Win 7, OSX 10.6 etc, why would anyone want a Netbook? A Netbook is merely a scaled down laptop with no added features? Does a Netbook make your life easier than a laptop would? I don't see how.

I think Apple very soon is going to rename iPhone OS to Apple Mobile OS given the release of iPad.

I am but not just yet

I admit that I love the iPad (despite the name). However I am willing to wait until next year once they refresh the unit and see if they adjust the price or just add features. It would definitely be better with some kind of USB adaption for flash memory or even Apple's external Superdrive. Even a built-in webcam for video chat.

Besides I already am going to get a Mac Pro once they update them and then the iPhone may be coming out for Verizon later this year. So I will have plenty to do until the next refresh of the iPad.

I don't really care about the iPad, the only interesting thing about it is how long it will take to jailbreak it.

>.< Wow. I can't even think of words to counter your ignorant post. You're acting as if augmented reality and video recording is all people want. You're not looking at the differences between it and the iPod touch and it's competitors. You are a looking at a very narrow minded picture and not looking into the details.

Much smaller and lighter = easier to lug around in a backpack.
Much longer battery life. 7 freaking hours with a 6 cell battery.
Cheaper than a full-fledged laptop. If it breaks or gets lost, well, I'm out $351. A couple of college text books are more expensive than that.
I've already got a full desktop computer. What do I need a super duper laptop for?

You don't see it from the other major computer companies? Really? Open your eyes!

Most major PC manufacturers cut corners like crazy on case design (crappy brittle plastic is everywhere), battery life, screen quality, etc to focus on the stats that "sell". You go look at any major PC manufacturers machines at CES and you see AWESOME tech, great ideas at every booth. None of those products will emerge in the market with those same specs even remotely intact. Notice that HP didn't even talk about the stats for the "Slate" no talk of the CPU, GPU, HD, Ram, or anything. They had a great demo but wanted to wait and see what competition made (including the iPad in this case) in order to change the make up of their machine to sell at a competitive price point. There is "dumbing down" all over this industry and Apple is less guilty of it than most.

I for one don't think they cut the camera to dumb down the device. I expect it was cut so that the price could be lower. $500 for an intro price is great, for that price I'm more than willing to overlook the lack of camera.

Many thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply, that does help a lot.
The Mrs. got laid off but we are still trying to get her through school and so our budget is now very tight, but she needs something and the old Powerbook just isn't going to make it much longer, I've had it since 2001, it's a real trooper.

Also look at the u160 from MSI, my cousin just got it for school and it is amazing (takes some design elements from the old SONY 505) batteries run for 15 hrs with a 250 gig drive for about 150 less

for your other question: a Dell MINI 10v ;)

on topic... no, I have an Apple toy (MBA) with a real OS - no need for one that is useless

I'll Second that! AU isn't the biggest thing around by far. Ease of use and portability is much higher on 'need scale' than AU. Heck, I can't think of one everyday use that AU would be useful for right now. But correct me if I'm wrong.

Some people just want a convenient media tablet to couch surf, for now.

I get what you're saying. I'm not 100% convinced whether the lack of a video camera was done to make a better v2, but I definitely get the sentiment. Two thoughts on that:

1. I've been annoyed with Apple since the first iPhone for the lack of a forward facing camera for iChat. Three generations later and we still don't have that feature. No idea what's driving that decision, but I guess I'm not surprised that the iPad lacks that feature, too. That said, as I've thought about a forward facing camera, I realize that I almost never use video chat to communicate. I think it would be a cool idea for my mother so she could see family, but that's about it. I admit that I'd be happier if I had the forward facing camera, but it's not so much of a deal breaker. Obviously others feel differently and I totally get that.

2. As for a camera on the back of the device, I think that would just be weird given the size/form factor of the iPad. It totally makes sense on the iPhone, but I suspect it would be awkward to use a camera on the back of an iPad.

Just another frustrated user waiting for the endlessly-delayed MBP update. It's hard not to hate on the iPad when (a) it's obviously holding up the new MBPs, and (b) Steve implies that the iPad is a netbook replacement.

If the iPad really could replace a netbook, I'd be rushing to buy one: my five-year-old G4 12" PB died a month ago, and since then I've been using a Hackintoshed Dell Mini 9 for all my work. (2GB, SSD, it's actually a pretty nice machine with an external keyboard and 24" display in the office.) But the iPad is so crippled as an actual _computer_ -- no USB, no multitasking, no printing, all kinds of proprietary formats and lockdowns -- that the humble $250 Dell bests it easily in the netbook space.

Assuming we ignore the suggestion that it's a netbook and judge it on its own terms, I'd like rev. 2 to include at least one or two USB ports, some kind of multitasking, a true HD display, and a camera for iChat/Skype (hell, even the puniest netbooks manage to include one). A pair of cheap bundled headphones would be nice too, but I won't hold my breath.

Just an aside: did anyone else find the Stephen Fry interview to be almost totally unrevealing of the Essence of Steve? (Whatever that may be.) He built up to his hour with the wizard, but didn't seem to get anything insightful out of the experience. Stephen was winning about how nervous the whole experience made him, and I suppose Steve is studiedly impenetrable by now.

I am buying both, we need an option for the total fanatics ;)
Yes me too. I went back to add wifi model after checking of the 3G and it told me it had already counted my vote. I am sure there are lots of us who are jumping on the wifi just to be first and also getting a 3G as well. The wifi will be great at home as surfer, reader, remote for ATV, Tivo, Comcast etc. Besides with only one the wife and I would fight like cats.

You, as in YOU! Yourself

---

I have no use for a video camera. And nobody cares about Augmented reality, thats a gimmick.

Give me a device that has a color display, long battery life and reads PDF files. A kindle? What can a kindle do that the iPad can't. A Netbook? Yeah like my stinking netbook that takes a while to load an APP. A laptop? Like the things my MacPro can already do but faster?

All I NEED is a content viewer device. So far Apple is the only one that addressed my needs. I was about to get a Lenovo Tablet for $2200. But since the reveal of the iPad it covered my NEEDS. It's simple, coherent, and an elegant appliance. I'm not going to wait, its already here. I'm getting the 64GB. Skipping 2nd gen to 3rd gen until 128GB or 256GB comes around.

Prices come down all the time. Buyers remorse? Bought a PS3 for $699 when you get one now for $299 3.5 years later.

Good luck playing the waiting game if thats your deciding factor.

Wow, I'm actually shocked that on a site like this that 54% of the poll responses are "no" or "maybe" (as of 9:53 AM PDT when I answered with an "maybe"). I really expected an overwhelming "yes" response.

Interesting.

edit: not sure I want to even bother reading the previous 150 posts, which surely have devolved into some sort of fanboy argument between the yes and no respondents over what makes a decent tablet or not by now...

I agree on the price point and I mentioned this in my post. But if the initial investment is not a hinderance then a MacBook will do all that a Netbook can do and much much more. It is not that super heavy also. The difference in performance/experience/functionality would far out-weigh the differences in weight and the battery life. Also a MacBook will outlive any Netbook.
