I have the same model laptop, no AppleCare. Battery 1 died a while back, so I bought a second. Thats been replaced 3 times already for free by Apple (had the Service Battery message on the last one that died - bring it in to the Genius bar and they'll test it, and likely give you a new one for free).

The tech was hinting at that they were having issues with Sony-based batteries. The new one I got this time was made by SMP, replacing a bad Sony. Not sure if there's truth to this or not, just what the tech told me.

LOL i had that model once too. My first battery literally expanded from the inside out as if out of pressure until the battery case broke open. The G-bar was baffled and never could figure it out. Oh well applecare just replaced it for free.

Wow, I'm actually shocked that on a site like this that 54% of the poll responses are "no" or "maybe" (as of 9:53 AM PDT when I answered with an "maybe"). I really expected an overwhelming "yes" response.

Interesting.
There are a lot of haters on this site.

Also, there are a lot of high school and college kids, i.e., youngsters without disposable income.

Some of the more sensible people would rather demo the unit in person before making a purchase decision. A few (like me) are waiting for version 2.0 or later, price drops, availability of refurbished units, etc.

I will buy an iPad 64 wifi when i go to the usa

i didn't believed the hype with the iPod and iPhone so i wouldn't let that happen to me again...

I also had the 2006 MBP original model. Went through 3 batteries on it as well; I guess they weren't very good.

Yours expanding sounds almost like it was potentially one of those exploding/burst into flames kind of laptop batteries that were making all the news a few years ago. You're lucky that's all that happened!

An iPad just might not be a priority for some people. I myself struggle to find a use for one, a PDA, or smartphone.

No! Apple has really miss the boat as far I'm concerned. The iPad COULD have been something real special. It COULD have been a hybrid platform device where computer applications and iPhone applications worked together. Of course Apple has that kind of technology. Don't try to convince me otherwise because I'm not buying it for a second! Look at iWork for example.

I'm NOT spending $499 just to have a giant iPhone WITHOUT any phone capabilities. RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!

I'm holding off on getting one until I know for certain that I'll have a use for it, and that I'll be able to justify the cost with something other than just "it's new and cool."

i'll think about getting an ipad after i replace my powerbook and g5 which both died in january. it's now april, and im still waiting for pro machine updates.
the ipad is cool and all, and i will get one eventually... but its ultimately a toy, an appliance for the home. what i need right now are tools, which apple does not seem to feel are important anymore. sorry guys...
give me some pro machine updates and i WILL be in the store the day they are released, cash in hand. no joke.

I agree on the price point and I mentioned this in my post. But if the initial investment is not a hinderance then a MacBook will do all that a Netbook can do and much much more. It is not that super heavy also. The difference in performance/experience/functionality would far out-weigh the differences in weight and the battery life. Also a MacBook will outlive any Netbook.

The initial investment _is_ a hindrance point. $351 (tax included) vs $899 plus tax, and I _still_ need to have Windows on it in some form because too many elearning web sites require ActiveX, and MS Office for Windows because Office for Mac still blows chunks in comparison.

The Macbook weighs 4.7 pounds, the Aspire One 2.79 pounds. Quite the difference; bearing in mind that the college text books you're also lugging around are quite hefty, too.
Performance? Not an issue. Experience? What does that even mean? Functionality? Again, not needed. Already got a desktop computer. It does everything it needs to do and has more functionality than the iPad.

Nope. If it was a dedicated computer (like the ModBook) I would have thought about it. I'm not too keen on spending that much on a walled garden system. I already own a Macbook so I don't see any use in this.

edit: not sure I want to even bother reading the previous 150 posts, which surely have devolved into some sort of fanboy argument between the yes and no respondents over what makes a decent tablet or not by now...

The iPad is initially geared as a convenient multi-media tablet, surfing, reading, movies for the consumer electronic masses.
... many on this board are enthusiasts and may have more sophisticated needs (judging from the outcry for a MBP refresh).

Some of the enthusiasts are early adopters, or see immediate value for themselves, whilst many are saying 'meh' it's still too immature, or not full featured enough to meet my needs - I'll wait or pass.

I don't think there are a lot of haters on this website. They probably comprise < 3% of the total posters. However, there are a lot of whiners. I'm probably one of them. I want the iPad I want, not the one Apple wants to make for me. I can live without Flash and can live without the forward-facing camera, but I need either a USB port or SD card reader. Now, jailbreakers may allow us to use the port adaptor as one. But, until then. No sale. And, it hurts me. Because it does look like a nifty device. It would just be too impractical at this point.

Maybe I'll go with an Android-based device like the Adam Ink. It may not look pretty, but it is 10X more functional and the Android Marketplace will likely surpass the App Store at some point in the next 5 years. OT, but here's some evidence for this statement:

can't wait

The recent reviews and videos have really changed a lot of people's minds about the iPad. Also, the Netflix App announcement yesterday was huge!

Can't wait!

The thing is, and another poster has pointed this out, it's mostly the printed media (& the one's that Apple has content agreements with) that are gushing over the iPad. Newspaper subscriptions are at an all time low right now. These corporations need new revenue streams. They need new subscribers. They see the iPad as a way to get them. Therefore, I believe most of these reviews are on the biased side.

Actually a pretty civil conversation all the way until page 5/6, and only then, just one or two name callings.

I'll watch and see how it develops. I think it's got good potential but there's nothing I've seen so far that makes me want to rush out and buy one.

Yeah, that's pretty much my attitude from day one, but it's been tough to not get into the fever all they hype from the big name fanboys (Mossberg, Ihnatko, LaPorte, etc) are generating. If I could have pre-ordered one this week for pickup tomorrow, I would have after falling into the RFD I'd managed to stay out of until now. LOL.

If I did it would be the 3G model. I travel with my laptop all the time. I know how hard it can be to find wi-fi when you really need it. Right now I solve that by carrying a 3G Card.

The data plan they setup with AT&T is very reasonable and seems very fair.

Sounds like you should be using a MyFi or some phone that allows tethering your data via adhoc WiFi (like a Nexus One or a Palm Pre or the upcoming Sprint EVO) instead of that 3G card. Then you could use the data for your laptop, or your WiFi only iPad, or both at the same time.

As reasonable as the data option that the 3G iPad comes with, you're still paying for data twice with it if you already have an iPhone/3G-card/whatever...

Will future software updates (for example iPhone OS 4.0) be free for the Wifi version of the iPad? Or is the WiFi iPad being treated like an iPod Touch where you have to pay each time there is an update?

From what I've seen the mainstream media in general has been dead on iPad news until this week.

Definitely...maybe!

I would get the wifi, as I wouldn't want to get into 3G plans (even my hardly used mobile is pay-as-you-go).

But it's a toy compared to my other upgrades this year: my ageing PowerMac really needs to be replaced with a MacPro; and I'd like to get a full-frame DSLR in place of my Canon 40D.

After that, and the software upgrades that an Intel Mac will allow me, the iPad is on the list. :)

It's not that, people here believe v1 products of apple are buggy. I personally think this is an outdated mantra...

Yes, you're correct, it is an outdated mantra, i think a more accurate mantra would be that ALL Apple products are buggy, regardless of version, in both hardware and software.

60% of all Apple hardware I've purchased over the years has had major hardware failures within the first year, this includes desktops, laptops, iPhones, routers, iPods, Cinema Displays, etc.

OS X 10.6.x is still full of bugs to listen to some people, iTunes is a bloated mess, Airtunes still drops out music on remote speakers even after years of it being a known issue.

Not being a hater here, I wouldn't buy any computer other than a Mac, but anyone saying they're of better build quality and bug-free has sure had a better experience with them than I have had over the last decade.

Outside the US...

Looking at all the video's with people sitting with their feet on tables to be able to comfortably type, I would need to hold and especially type the slate before " thinking about planning" a purchase... But my biggest gripe is that being in a small country lost of the interesting content (in this case Ibooks, movies, tv shows) is not available. I made this mistake with the apple TV...
