"I don't hate it, I don't like it. It's simply nothing special...

I wouldn't be surprised if this is not the final design; it could even be radically different. The hardware is likely final, but the case? It's pretty bland. Anyone in love with it is just drunk on the koolaid."

My Post:

HICCUP! :eek::D

Actually, it looks better constructed then the 3GS... as in solid looking IMO. I like this better then the silver bezel of the iPhone of old, but I guess for for others it is something one will have to get used to. To actually hold in one's hands will probably determine how much one will like it, especially if they are a 3G or 3GS owner...

But really, in candy bar form, how much can one really revise the outer casing.

I am just wondering if AT&T has another year of exclusivity or if Apple will open this up to other carriers be it T-Mobile or a chipset that Verizon and Sprint can use. That is what is I'm interested in hearing at the iPhone product announcement from Steve in June.

You are on my awesome list due to this post :D

Leaked photos from non-macrumors site:
"It's a POS!", "Fake!", "I wouldn't buy that ever!"

Macrumors says it's true and posts a poll:
"Love it!", "Apple FTW!", "I'd have it's babies!"

We find out it's a non-final prototype on April 21:
"It's a POS!", "Fake!", "I wouldn't buy that ever!"

God, I love this site :D.

I totally agree.

I totally agree. Based on a number of factors I don't think this is the "iphone will be seeing this summer" Apple has gone to some incredible lengths to keep their new products confidential. Someone correct me if i'm wrong but if I recall properly when the iphone was first in development Apple gave their software team dummy hardware and their hardware team dummy software in order to keep the products final design as protected from leaks as possible. Given the importance of iPhone and its future success i wouldn't put apple past making dummy cases for one reason or another.

This external design just doesn't "in my opinion" reflect apples current design principals.

Yes...

I agree. As much as I love the look of the existing iPhone I think this looks more like a cellphone and less like fancy toy. This new industrial look would fit better into business situations, while still looking cool enough for everyone else.

I think it'll expand the market (if that's even possible) and maybe even finally sway the last few sceptics that still see the iPhone as nothing more than an expensive novelty.

As we know all too well, looking professional and businesslike is more important in corporate America than ones ability to perform. I do not see Apple's products as unbusinesslike. They actually look quite professional to someone like myself that utilizes them for business. Much of Apple's success has been to break through the beige and into the modern. What ever happened to "Think Different"?

magically, your mind will change in the next 6 months......are you a professional industrial designer? did not think so....

Nope, It won't. If thats indeed the next gen iPhone...I'm still skeptical.

and your point?....i have to be a professional/industrial designer to critique a design?. I'm all for cutting edge/new design but to me this isn't it.

You can also tell a lot of practicality/utilitarian theme went into the design presumably so that Apple can easily repair instead of replacing as its done currently given how popular the phone has become. No complex curves/parts....just a slab thats easy (cheap) to make and pick apart.

Thats not necessarily a bad thing but i'm just not feeling the design personally, and that smaller screen size is a big no no.

so I was watchin a video from a channel I subscribed to and they said the screen is smaller but higher reslution.... sorry I'm not very up on these things but I would have thought smaller screen smaller resolution?

Goodbye awful rounded edges!

I think the design is wonderful, and shows that Apple may be coming back from the awful form over function model it's been using since the switch to Intel.

The hardware specs are something special, and actually put the phone back on top with the rest of the competition. It's no Evo 4G especially since it won't be using LTE at all, but it's nice to see Apple with PSUEDO multitasking, and a phone with hardware specs from 2010.

Verizon!

I have been wanting the iphone for ages now, but there is not a chance in hell that i leave Verizon for AT&T just to have it. Man, I really hope this one is headed to Big Red. :D

Couldn't agree more. If it actually 'fits' in my hand and doesn't want to slip out like a bar of soap I'm all for the redesign. Plus I hate the chrome around the face and glad to see it going away.

By removing the curved backing, Apple has taken away ergonomic considerations, something they were careful to champion when the first iPhone and even the iPad were released.

Maybe Apple wants you to use the camera up front with iChat then talk like a phone. So you won't have the phone in hand to your ear but rather hand and block form is easier to grasp? I've seen a lot of calls made by people push to talk walkie talkie style or speakerphone where they just hold to the front of their lips.

What this means is that the previous volume rocker made it clear that the top was volume up and the bottom volume down. These new buttons, perhaps to Apple's benefit, are no longer as strictly defined.

Unless you are holding the phone upside down... I don't see that much a difference. The top button volume up and the bottom button volume down and who knows just like double clicking the home button to bring up multitasking open icons, maybe if you puch the home button and a easier to detect and push volume button gets you??? Who knows? The Shadow knows...

What???

Apple decided to make a phone, instead of these "toys" they've been coming up with the past few years. I've simply refused to buy iPhones because they simply look like jokes and playthings, not to mention that ridiculous backside that does not enable a proper grip, but a mere "grasp" of the phone. Never understood or cared for all that prior design, it looked cheap anyway.

Will definitely be buying this. The iPhone finally grew up.

Toys? Jokes and play things? Try highly functional products with modern design. Wait, I apologize. I must be either a child or some "artsy" loser to appreciate these toys. I may have an old Motorola brick phone in a box somewhere. I'll ship it to you for free. It will look great in your late seventies station wagon.

It's been said before but...

..it can be repeated. It looks like a Zune. First thing that popped into my head actually.

Not that this is a bad thing - I think it looks better than the old design. Assuming this is actually the design of the new iPhone...

If you are correct, Engadget's reputation that they are headstrong in maintaining that this IS the 4th gen iPhone will be blown out the water and their posting of such future materials will be highly questionable more so then it is today.

Yuk. It goes against all the styling cues Apple has been working towards in the past several years. Curving ergonomic shapes, simplicity of appearance, no lines. If it is produced by Apple it is a generic case used for field testing.

News Flash

Apple loses spin the iPhone in favor of more accurate bubble leveler apps.

Anyway, it's not just the design of the system, it's the functionality, it's also about iPhone OS, and all of the apps! Sounds like they've added a lot of functionality that has been asked for, and looks like it matches the MBP, iPad and iMac now. Would be cool to see an "aluminum unibody" on it. Maybe it's just me, but I think a "slightly" larger screen (edge-to-edge) would be nice.

I guarantee that this is only a "mock up"-shell used for testing the hardware and OS.. They don't want a shell that is difficult to break open/change battery in when they test different hardware stuff, antenna placements.. .etc
