Website started in Feb 2000. It started with an early version of PHPSlash... which was a PHP port of Slashdot.

The code wasn't in a very advanced state, and limited comment support was added... but in the end vBulletin was used and implemented in 2001.

I started MacRumors... and it's been a hobby site since it started. I'm not sure what details you're interested in.

The purpose of the site when it started is basically the same as it is today. To track/follow rumors/news on Apple. Lots of rumors appear in non-traditional rumor sites -- mainstream sites, patent applications, etc...

I guess I was the first member.

It's not run on servers in a basement, it's run on four dedicated machines with a lot of RAM - but they're linux based.

Money is made to support MacRumors from the advertising on the pages, and also through contributing.

I wouldn't have thought anyone would get paid to do an interview on a news channel, but that's just my experience talking. I'm just speculating, but I expect the US networks are the same when it comes to news - nobody getting interviewed gets paid.

Do all the moderators work for Arn? or do they all work full time jobs and just post as a hobby?
Well BV answered that :)

Who is Jelsoft Enterprises?
The company that make VBulletin, the software that runs the forums.macrumors.com site.

And the rest of your questions, I can't answer at all...

Does someone literally sift thru the Internet all day long looking for any info on the Internet regarding Apple News/Rumors?

Does Arn have direct access to people at Apple?

I just think MacRumors and its origin is very interesting and exciting!

Arn, would you care to give your members some history about MacRumors and how it all began? Please?

However, this last bit is answered in a forum post. I can't find it, maybe someone else can. The stages of MacRumors, or ages of, or something like that. I bet the other demis know what I'm on about.

A little bit of history as to some of the older and more prominent posters was revealed via "interviews" from Q starting with this post. (Click "View Entire Thread" to read the following relevant posts.)

Also, Revenues generated and costs of running.

Bigandy, I know which thread you're referring to, but can't for the life of me find it right now. Argh. Er... so a kind demi pointed the way to the thread but as per forum rules, I can't post the link here. But yes... it exists. Teehee.

Yes! I found it! HA! Here it is-- a glimpse into MR's past.

yea im also interested in all the stuff about MR, particularly how the server operates and that. like how much storage do you guys have? that would have to be a hell of alot. i cant even comprehend how much youd have.

you should do tours of MR HQ :p i so would come to america just to see that!!!

Yes, but how many of those 4,000,000 posts are actually worth reading? These days it seems most posts are useless "me too" or "I'm getting out my credit card" posts...

Me, too!

I mean, ditto, Rush!

I mean, er ...

I pressed negative, just because the post was a self-congratulatory pile of garbage. I hate it when people give themselves a pat on the back for doing their job. And I'm an ass. Nice graph, fellas. What do you think this is, a keynote? Save it for your sponsorship kit.

my son just asked, "why is this the only mac site you go to?"
seriously, he asked this as i clicked on the macrumors bookmark...then i find this thread and i realized...

this is the only mac/apple site i visit regularly anymore. i used to have a bunch that i checked daily.

but macrumors gives me everything i need in a mac site:
rumors
news
buyers guide
a community/forum that is fun and lively.

congrats and keep up the great work.

Ungrateful swine. This is not a job for moderators, it's a hobby. I have been a mod on forums in the past, (max size about 500 active members), and it is often thankless and you get nothing but abuse whenever you go against a popular member or group.

If you don't like this opinion, don't visit this place or better still, set-up a rival site, try to build up a sufficient membership that will contribute, gain advertising revenues and the respect of your members and peers running other sites. When you fail, as you would almost certainly do, return here, apologise and have a little more gratitude to those running and helping out this fine forum.

Some of us are interested in knowing about the 4 millionth post and the competitions that are associated with it. While it is inevitable that this topic would turn into praise for the moderators and admins, how often does that go on around here?

I didn't want to say, but I knew you'd find it. I was going to refer to you as googilot or something, to highlight your incredible (and slightly worrying) macrumors searching ability :p

That's the exact one I was thinking about, thanks :D

<bookmarks to avoid another incident not being able to find it>

It took MacRumors 3 years and 4 months to reach one million posts, 1 year and 4 months to reach 2 million posts, 10 months to reach 3 million posts, and just over 9 months to reach 4 million posts. We attribute our rate of growth both to MacRumors' increasing rank among Apple-related sites on the web and to the increased interest in Apple and its wide range of products.

Congratulations on 4 million. I really enjoy visiting this site--both for your stories and for the comments generated by them.

And just to be a nit-picker, you're above statement could be stated better. It would be more clear if the word "another" was placed before the numbers 1, 10, and 9. (Sorry if this was a repeat, I didn't read the previous 90+ posts.)

I'll check back again in another 4 months when you're celebrating 5 million posts :)

Many contragulations MR, whilst I don't contribute often, it is my number one source for apple related information and advice/hacks (loosely) on the web and since "switching" 2 years ago I must frequent at least 3-5 times a day for updates.

No thanks to the staff and community that support it, and myself whenever I have a problem.

Thanks again, and please don't stop whatever it is you're doing to support this wonderful resource.

I have a serious question.
....
Arn, would you care to give your members some history about MacRumors and how it all began? Please?

I think much of this has been hinted at above.

MacRumors started as a hobby site in February 2000, out of personal interest. I frequented the rumor sites, news sites etc... and back then there was a much greater gap between the two. Mainstream news sites would avoid any rumor-related topics, and rumor sites were more focused on their own sources. There was a fair amount of content that was interesting/relevant that didn't get reported on, and MacRumors consolidated all that.

MacRumors is owned by myself. While it is a business entity for financial purposes, there are no full time employees. Everyone who works on the site, including myself, have full time jobs outside of MacRumors. Money is made on advertising, and while none of the mods/volunteers really have salaries, they are compensated in various ways when we can.

Answers to other questions

- We rely a lot of user submissions for interesting tidbits news/rumor hidden on the internet.
- We don't have any direct access with Apple. We don't get invited to their media events etc...
- Jelsoft writes the forum software (vbulletin).
- I don't think anyone gets paid for CNBC/news appearances
