Since this is my first Mac, this is a pretty good deal. That said, I am not too impressed with the MacUpdate site, as it by default puts all your info in your public profile (can be disabled in the privacy tab in preferences) and auto-renewal.

I also removed as much personal information as I could, just in case. I highly recommend you do the same if you have no plans on continuing your subscription.

Yikes, didn't realize profiles were public by default. Thanks for the heads up.

gotta love bargain bin junk most people don't use anyways!

Ok wait! Are these 2,,

- DVD REmaster Pro 7 ($49) - Convert DVD movies to iPhone or Apple TV
- Mac DVDRipper 2 ($9) - Copy DVDs to your Mac

Good/not worth using??? Or are there better/cheaper alternatives?
I just got an iPad, and taking a trip next week,,, what's the easy way to save a few movies to it???

From what I can tell, these are regular licenses, so whatever the normal license/upgrade policy is, applies here.

These are both great Apps - Using them at the moment to rip dvd's to my iTunes library for Apple TV and Ipad. Does not take long for Mac DVD Ripper to rip the DVD's, and you can then queue up several movies in VDV Remaster to re-encode for iTunes to run overnight :)

I use both of these all the time to convert DVDs to my iPad. Both are nearly effortless to use and do a really nice job to boot.

You can use the free program Handbrake to do what DVD Remaster Pro does, however, I find that I spend way too much time fiddling with settings and often times end up with sup-par or mediocre results with it, whereas DVD Remaster Pro does a consistently good job with almost no screwing around.

There are 3 or 4 great apps in that suite. I already own the ones I'd want but if you don't have Parallels or 1Password...you are missing out. Just google some reviews and you'll see what I mean.

WARNING!

Only one other mention among these 100 posts so it should be repeated --

Buying this package automatically gives you a 6 month subscription to MacUpdate which will AUTORENEW and charge your credit card!

BEWARE!!

You must go and manually turn this off.

Dirty trick in my book, since I never intended to use MacUpdate.

That said, I got the package to get a 1Password for Windows license that I can use on my work machine. I currently have the Mac version. Also the upgrade for Parallels which will probably only be useful until Lion comes out if past OS upgrades have been any indicator.

Frankly, this does look like a very good package, except for the MacUpdate trick.

Yep, exactly...despite being an excellent bundle, it's nonetheless a sly move by MacUpdate - after creating an account, you must go to your settings and deactivate auto-renew.

What pisses me off most is the fact that I CANNOT delete my credit card information there. Can anyone do that?

A bit of a scam and scummy

Beware, when purchasing this MacUpdate bundle:

- not all software is current version
- MacUpdate signs you up for an auto-renewing subscription

In my book this is deceptive. MacUpdate - you need to be honest and upfront with your customers.

Thanks for this. Although I got a good deal from this purchase, that's the third strike for macupdate (auto-recurring renewal, public privacy options, misleading "hurry buy now" advertising), so I won't be buying from them again.

Mac SuperBundle

Did anyone buy the mac superbundle deal? I am not familiar with Nova Development and wonder if I can trust them with CC information.

app store?

sadly, there seems to be no way to import those software licenses to the app store, which really bugs me. or is there any update on importing existing licenses?

Odd, all I did was copy the folder to my HD like the readme said and ran the executable. Worked fine for me, I didn't see an installer (although it did ask for my serial #, so maybe that was it's form of installation).

diamond.g, what was the name of the file that you downloaded?

From the MacUpdate email, I clicked the link and downloaded Civ4_1.74.dmg which only contains an installer. Running the installer results in the error message that other have reported. Am I missing something?

Hmm, I am not at my Mac ( :( ) but when I get home I will look at the DMG I downloaded. I wonder if they changed it part of the way through...

EDIT: I think I clicked the link that was on the page after purchasing the bundle, not the one in the email.

EDIT #2: Looks like what you downloaded (because that is where the link sent me) was a patch, good and bad...

Thanks for your reply diamond.g

Turns out that the problem was that I 'gifted' Civ IV to my brother in law. His notification email did not contain the link to download Civ IV, just the patch. When he tried to install the patch, surprise surprise he received an error message.

The link for downloading Civ IV is located in the email titled "Your MacUpdate Promo purchase receipt"

Greatly appreciate this information.

MacUpdate bundle dishonesty

A few things for everyone here to chew on.

I asked the MacUpdate people to clarify on their site that they are selling old versions of software. They said no. They will not clarify or make it obvious that they are selling old software.

The only possible motive for this deception is profit. They would sell fewer bundles if they noted old versions as old.

I think it's useful for the public to know that not only does MacUpdate (a site that specializes in telling you if software is out of date) forget to tell you the software they are selling is out of date, they also sign you up for a recurring subscription to their service. Your credit card with get auto billed again in 6 months.

Once again, not making the auto-billing for their service obvious can only be motivated by increasing revenue at the cost of honesty.

The majority of people buying the bundle will think they are getting current software, when that is absolutely not the case. The bundle would still be a good deal for the majority, but honesty in letting people know they need to upgrade to be current would go a long way.

Personally I think this is grounds for a class-action lawsuit, especially considering the function the MacUpdate site provides.

app tamer

I can't believe nobody thinks app tamer is worthwhile, having tried it out for the past week it seems to work nicely and actually WORKS

thanks for this... hopefully your info will be read by others. i did a previous bundle and got jammed on the parallels version...had to spend more to get it to current.

i held on the latest bundle since i already had purchased the heavy hitters individually (1password, etc.). glad i did even more so now...
