I got mine and purchased 2 black exec. field cases in hope that at least one of the cases would fit well, and I was right. As some have already reported, the edge around the volume rocker may stick out a bit and you can clearly see a gap between the phone and case. Case 1 displayed this issue significantly where as case 2 was close enough to a snug fit. There is only a very slight gap near volume controls so i am keeping case 2.
Even before fitting the cases, I held the 2 cases up and compared them side by side and i could see that the mould of case 1 was not quite right and already sticking out.
I recommend purchasing these instore so you can inspect yourself or ask the online retailer to do an inspection themselves and ship a case where the sides are not sticking outwards. The sides should be fall straight down or curve inwards. Curving inwards should be a non issue as after installing the phone, the case would conform to the shape of the phone.
Finally i agree with all the positive ratings of this case. The biggest positive in my opinion is its slim form factor. It has good grip & ever so slight lay on the table design but its enough.
I haven't tested out camera, headphone jack or docking sections yet.
Just make sure to get a case where the sides don't stick out and most customers should be happy![]()
Does anyone have any tips on how to fix the mould if they have a case where the sides do stick out?
viewfly recommended that you roll or work the sides in when the phone is not in the case. I tried that and it helped a little. I also noticed that this case seems to break in after some use. The buttons are actually getting much easier to press and are getting a nice clicky feel. I also noticed that if you remove the case to clean the back side of the phone it seems to weaken the case in the area that was used to pull the case off the phone. My bottom corner started to show the same gap appearance like I have around my volume buttons. I found that the trick of pushing the case back in that area does help to close up the gap that formed. On another note, I never received a reply back from Magpul about the case having the gap by the volume buttons. That's a little disheartening seeing that they don't respond to customer inquires about an issue. I do Tech/Customer service for my company and not responding to a customer inquiry be it good or bad is a serious issue. I will continue to use the case as it is still pretty good compared to the other cases I tried. I wound up putting a Black Carbon fiber skin on the back to avoid having to take the phone out for periodic cleanings.
