Sunk cost fallacy. I’ve spent so much money I may as well spent more. Casinos love this logic

I see it more as “in for a penny, in for a pound”.

Apple's ecosystem is designed around people that easily spend money. It's a common trope around here that Apple gear is overpriced (which I disagree with, for most part) but given that, and their financials which are unlike any other comparable company, you can only conclude that Apple buyers spend money - a lot of it.

I'm end-to-end Apple gear. I don't want to dick around with cobbling some system together, deal with any more accounts than I already have (200+ passwords in my 1Password), or deal with security issues. And at this point in my life, I want things to be easy more than I want them to be cheap.

I am Apple's target market, unapologetically. Is Apple Music lower quality or more expensive? I literally don't care. I just want to be able to pull up a song on my watch and stream it to my airpods no matter where I am. That's it. I'll pay more for it. I don't have to install an app. I can airplay it to damn near everything in my house.

This is what Apple does. They rarely beat competitors on the bullet list, but when it comes to 'look at your phone and everything is unlocked', they're unbeatable. They play the system integration game better than anyone else, and if it costs a few bucks more, I'm happy to pay it.

I would really love a clean bedside charging setup like this. Single wire, charge phone and watch. MagSafe built in. But it just has this feeling that it’s more of a portable device made for travel. Wish it was something a bit sturdier / heavier.

Makes me wonder if it was designed as a travel charging solution, before the pandemic and travelling taking a big hit.
The puck can be pushed up, so that's nice. I already have a 'flip up' Apple Watch charger, and a Belkin charger in my Delta First Class Tumi cheap plastic box in my carryon, which is collecting dust and cobwebs at the moment.

It does sound like a good idea, but for a hundred thirty bucks? When I have it covered already, probably cheaper than this. Hmm...

And every now and again, my Apple Watch takes to beeping during hte night. No idea why. I will bump it, and reposition it, and it just keeps beeping. GRRRR... But anyway...

This looks sick and I can’t wait to get a few. I love how people act like Apple is making you get this or something, if you don’t like it then don’t buy it. It looks compact, made very well, and it’s optimized to work well with iPhone and Applewatch. I don’t think 129$ is too high..... I guess if you’re cross shopping on Amazon and are willing to risk it with those crappy $29.99 - $40 looking “chargers,” go for it lol
Don’t forget to also purchase the latest 20W charging brick. This doesn’t come with one.

I was super excited about the idea of this when it comes to traveling... until the price was dropped on us like a crappy Skrillex dub step song.

Right there with you.

And there lies the problem. Apple continues their outrageous pricing strategy because people will still buy it even though it’s double what it should cost.

This white elephant actually costs more than $129. For most people, you need to add the additional original cost of your current, perfectly adequate and more ergonomic charging solutions, that you’ll now feel compelled to obsolete.

Literally has no standout feature, either in design or functionality. Be honest, remove the Apple logo and this is one of those 3-and a half star $19.99 products you’ll find on Amazon. This isn’t a luxury purchase, it’s just a stupid one.

I like the execution, but I wouldn’t pay $129 for this. But there’s a lot more competition for far less of a price. I know Apple makes quality products, but you can still achieve similar results by spending a lot less money. For me, I probably would’ve preferred the Airpower if it had actually launched. (<—Mainly I really liked the concept of placing the device anywhere on the mat, not having specific alignment.)

Love the portable design. It reminds me of the time when traveling was still an option.

Go Anker, do your Anker magic and make a cheap 40€ knock off. :)

Do you think Apple gets a cut from accessory makers for MagSafe just like they did for lightning.

Well said and I fully agree. Unfortunately, the problem is not what it does but how much it costs. For me and I suspect many others we just can’t afford it without a second thought about the cost.

I love how the person who made this video failed to do the one thing I actually cared about seeing them do, which was attempt to pick up the phone one-handed without holding down the charging base.

That convenience is what makes wireless charging so appealing to me: just drop your phone on a charging disc, then grab it again when you need it. When MagSafe was first rumored, I thought Apple had come up with a clever way to make the magnets "grab" (and align) your phone when you dropped it on the charger, and then somehow use NFC communication between the devices to "release" them when you started to pick it back up. It would be like regular wireless charging, but more foolproof and reliable--adding that infamous Apple polish to something we'd all thought we had to accept as-is.

So when the standard MagSafe puck proved to be completely bereft of any such cleverness, I figured Apple was just saving the easy grab-and-go user experience for the Duo Charger. But from looking at this thing, I don't have much confidence that it too wouldn't just lift off the table if I tried to grab my phone from it. I like the design of the Apple Watch half of it, but that's about it.

In general, I feel like the Duo Charger suffers from the poor combination of looking cheaply made while charging a high-end price. Even if it's eventually shown to offer that grab-and-go convenience, I doubt I'll jump on it for the price they're charging. (Frankly, for that money, it's beneath contempt that we don't even get a $20 power adapter with it.)

Guess I'll stick with my existing charging gear for a while longer and see if the market can bring some third-party MagSafe accessories to the table.

Go full Sony and make iPhone charging proprietary (which it sort of already is). Don’t give us a block or a cable and make MagSafe the only way to charge. If you want to charge your new phone, force the consumer to purchase this $129 option. Oh, and spin it that it’s actually cheaper if you think about it because it can charge your watch too!

Please, Daddy Apple, I’ve been a bad boy!
