Playing around and decided to put on a bumper. The naked back does not work all that well with the MagSafe puck. It holds but will likely pop off when going over a big bump as I was gently jiggling it and with a little extra force it pops off the MagSafe. View attachment 1674228
I have a metal bumper on mine also, the charger I bought off of Amazon doesn’t stick very well. That back is just too slick, I should be getting a a matte skin from Slickwraps in on Monday. I’m pretty sure that should help a bit. I had put the clear sticker that you would put under a metal plate and it actually stuck to the magnet better. However I didn’t like the look and only used it to experiment.

Got my belkin magsafe holder today. Feels pretty firm. I will let you know after a few days of driving.

The good news is most of these chargers use a standard sized mounting "ball" to connect the vent/cd/dash/windshield mount to the actual charger. You can search for a "Garmin ball mount" on Amazon as Garmin's GPS units pretty much standardized the size of these mounting balls.

Point is, no matter what form-factor you buy, you can often buy a CD mount or other styles that terminate in such a Garmin mounting ball... hence giving you infinite flexibility in the mounting method.
Examples:

CD-Slot mount: https://www.amazon.com/APPS2Car-Hol...eywords=Garmin+cd+mount&qid=1605796875&sr=8-3

Vent Mount: https://www.amazon.com/APPS2Car-Hol...0&sr=1-1-5e875a02-02b1-4426-9916-8a5c26cd5a14

Flat Plate to be taped or screwed onto things: https://www.amazon.com/Contains-Uni...words=Garmin+ball+mount&qid=1605796995&sr=8-2

Weighted Friction mount: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-1...=Garmin+dashboard+mount&qid=1605797033&sr=8-5

The options really are endless, provided your charger accepts these "balls"

This is great, assuming there is is a magsafe option at some point with a ball mount to use with the CD slot

It is a game changer to just throw on a magnet and drive rather than snap on. I'm so used to it with my old iphone/magnet stuck inside the case

One thing to note:

Magnets are much stronger in one direction. If you try to pry to magnets apart in a perpendicular fashion, it will be very hard. The same strong magnets can be "slid" apart (parallel to each o there) much easier. This is where the Magsafe cases will help. Both the silicone and leather will provide added friction that can prevent the "sliding" where the magnetic force is less.

I believe that's why Apple added that "orientation" magnet below the circle array of magnets. It's there to help hold the phone when in car mounts, etc..

I wouldn't buy any magsafe car mount if it does not have that orientation magnet.

The ESR HaloLock doesn't have the orientation magnet and with an Apple Silicone Case, very solid hold without rotation

Is the ESR HaloLock a stronger hold than the Magsafe puck itself? Till they come out with a fully Magsafe compatible 15w charger, I was just gonna use my puck taped to the dash. Time will tell how well the phone holds.

I don't have an Apple MagSafe puck but the hold on the HaloLock is quite strong (and black works better with my dash, and probably most people's, than white)

Yeah, black would look better. Let me know how the 7.5w charging does while you are using GPS and streaming. I realize it won't fast charge, but so long as battery level doesn't go down, and hopefully goes up a little, I'd be ok with it.

Before the 12 Pro, I was using a Scosche Magic Mount Charge (also 7.5) as a wireless charging mount and found that it would still charge even with GPS + streaming.

As a side note, the HaloLock hold is stronger / more reliable than the Scosche (used magnetic plates for back of phone)

I'm building my own MagSafe car mount with parts from RAM Mounts

My dashboard has a flat panel for the suction cup mount... and I'll attach the MagSafe puck to the circular plate.

The MagSafe puck feels very strong when attached to the MagSafe Silicone case... so hopefully it will be strong enough to handle bumpy roads. We'll see!
