Check this out. I think it’s a good idea and it’s cheap.

It’s a car holder for your EXISTING MagSafe charger. Instead of you trying to work with all the magnets and fittings yourself.

talogca Air Vent Phone Holder for Car, Car Charger Base Stand for MagSafe Wireless Charge, Adjustable Car Smart Phone Cradle Car Mount

Only £5 from Amazon.

Only problem is the MagSafe charging cable is fixed, so to get the cable in the slot of the rim you’ll have to physically cut the rim. But it’s only a fiver so...

Sort of looks like the MagSafe holder is silicone or other potentially stretchy material, so potentially you needn't cut anything. Rather, thread the cable through from the inside and it stretches over the connector. I may be wrong of course.

Nothing to prevent phone rotation within the mount though, so it will be interesting to see how that works in practice.

The desktop stand variant seems perfect for affixing to the dash with VHB tape, as is done with some other mounts. Not all vehicle have compatible vents... and I will assure you that here in the SouthEast US in July, I need all the air conditioning I can get. Not gonna block up a vent. :p

I don’t have a MagSafe charger yet, mine delivers from Apple at the end of the month. If you put a MagSafe charger at the back of an iPhone 12, does it rotate around easily?

But yes this looks like it relies on the gravity of the cable going downwards to try to reduce spinning on the ball joint.

I presently own neither an iphone12 nor a magsafer charger, so I cannot answer the first question.

As to the second - if this is built like the various other ball mount holders I've used, the ball socket tightens down and prevents the mount from turning. The question would be more whether the phone might "walk" its way around with the minor bumps and vibrations during travel.

Pure speculation at this point. We shall see what the reality ends up being.

glue a magnet to the bottom of the cable piece so it doesn't spin. or get a thick enough shrink tubing and wrap it around that section where the lower magnet would be.
Or just get a holder that has that magnet built in. I only see the apple charger good if you are home and its not bouncing around like in a car.

This looks perfect for what I'd want. I'm not having any luck finding it on the US Amazon site. Might be UK only?

Closest I could find was this one, but not a vent mount and not available until January

My HaloLock car mount arrived yesterday. It definitely holds the phone solidly enough and the mount sits nicely on the adjustable foot, but it has one big issue - there is nothing to keep the phone from rotating in the mount. I have the Apple clear case (which is VERY slippery) and the phone tends to "spin" on the mount while I'm driving. I think it would work a lot better with a silicone case. It needs something to create some friction between the phone and the mount.

Other than that, it works fairly well. I'm going to see about getting some thin rubberized tape or something to put on the mount. Hopefully that will help.

Well, I finally got mine and my 12 Pro in an Apple Silicone case does not rotate and the magnetic bond is rock solid. Time will tell on the connection between the mount and the vent (which is very dependent on vent type and can change over time as the mounting mechanism loosens, etc). This thing is big!

Well I have my magnetic mount figured out now. I'll wait to stick it onto my radio bezel until after I can get the blue/black Pitaka MagEZ case for my iPhone 12 Pro Max. So far mounting it like this appears like I will have full access to the touch screen and vent, with the phone somewhat blocking the volume/power knob, so this is perfect. I'm actually going to return this Pitaka mount to Amazon since it is the old design. Pitaka said their new design will hold the phone better due to a bit of a redesign.

Their old magnet geometry was definitely different than that of MagSafe. I have their old case from my old iPhone XS Max and the MagSafe puck does not properly center on there because of the different magnet dimensions.

For me the standardization of magnets is probably the best thing about MagSafe. Right now it looks like there are no full power car chargers out there. I may just use 3m dual-lock fasteners to stick the MagSafe puck to my dash for now. I did some testing with the puck and my leather case and I'm confident it will hold it plenty strong.

Yeah and I have changed my thinking about a Mag Safe mount to just a good quality magnetic mount. I like the Pitaka cases a lot so I'll give them a try. If something cool comes out for Mag Safe mounts, then maybe I'll hop aboard the bandwagon next year with the iPhone 13.

This is what I currently use. Do you think a magnet mount would be more secure? Honestly I've always felt something like what I'm currently using is better because the phone is more clamped and secure versus simply a flat magnet.

Also do the new iPhones work will all magnet mounts or do they need to be MagSafe specific?

I have the Apple magsafe silicon case and an air vent Scosche mount. It grips but as i drive, it slides off. Was considering maybe putting a plate in the bottom half of the case.. It will be a pain in the butt because I think my MagSafe charger might stick to the plate, but I need a solution for when im in the car...

or I just give in and buy the Belkin one ($40 for a car mount with not charging!!!)
I’m considering taking apart my Scosche magnet mount entirely (seeing as there are strong magnets arranged in an X shape inside, definitely enough to repurpose into a MagSafe-compatible solution. I’m less concerned about charging since I’ve got to plug in for CarPlay.

Otherwise, whatever junk “MagSave” is trying to sell people for $45-60, you can 100% the same thing on AliExpress for 1/3 the price. Haha. Not even going to mention how little I’d trust that stuff charging anything properly, especially in my car. I’d use any of those products only without their charging capabilities.

I like this one but is there any way to make it a dash mount instead of a vent mount?
I’d straight up rip/cut the ball joint mount piece off and secure the mid/lower section with 3M tape to some sort of ProClip or similar solution... but that’s just me.

That’s pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Cutting and filling down the extra bulk in the back. There appears to be enough space at the bottom to attach a metal plate for the magnet to bond to.

For those of you who used double sided tape to rig your mounts to your dash... put bubble wrap on your lower center console to soften the impact of your phone once the tape breaks loose!

ProClip just posted the first of many MagSafe accessories for the iPhone 12 Pro: https://www.proclipusa.com/product/magicgrip-wireless-charger

Now if only they’d release a magnet-only non-charger version for those of us who used wired CarPlay!
The listing doesn’t mention “MagSafe”, only Qi, and nothing about magnets.

Is it really a MagSafe holder? Primarily I’d like to see confirmation of 15w charging if they’ve certified this against made for iPhone.

It's not magsafe anything.

ESR responded to my email this morning and they said another 2 days UGH! Is the rotating really bad?
