I bought a cheap MagSafe charger off on amazon, the magnetic pull isn’t the greatest, does hold the phone but won’t make it over large bumps. However my phone did do the MagSafe charge animation. I was under the impression only real Apple MagSafe chargers did that.

Interesting to hear that. Do you get a different animation with a regular Qi charger? (I don't have a 12 yet).

@cannono was quite sure that only Apple-approved devices with a special NFC chip would charge any faster than the 7.5W max on Qi. Do you have a battery app that'll tell you charge rate in watts or in milliamps & voltage?

I haven’t tried it with any other wireless charger yet, so this has been my only experience with one so far.

I get the regular charging screen (battery only, not the MagSafe circular graphic) on the ESR HaloLock and my desktop Qi cradles (Belkin and Logitech)

Was really hoping someone would have mentioned a CD slot mount option by now. Will never go vent again

I got this a couple years ago and used the 3M back to cover the CD drive since I never used it. Front is nice feel rubber full of small magnets. You can stick an iPad mini or 2 phones anyways you like on it and MagSafe sticks on the mini 12. I’ll use the MagSafe metal back to stick to this bar or will stick a metal plate to back if MagSafe to easy clip to this bar and move it anytime I like. The black bar blends with the car and people think it came like this. I couldn’t stand using the vent mounts.

Great idea! I wonder whether there’s something like this that is made to be inserted into the CD slot and doesn’t take use tape

If I use the MagSafe charger to charge my 12 Pro Max, and then plug the lightning cable for the car's stereo, will the wireless charging continue? Or the iPhone will switch to wired charging? The car's stereo provides very little charging power through the wire, but it needs the wire to play from the iPhone. Thanks.

There's been a variety of phone mounts which insert into the CD slot. iOttie and others.

Whether a MagSafe one will show up rather than the standard Qi remains to be seen.

The good news is most of these chargers use a standard sized mounting "ball" to connect the vent/cd/dash/windshield mount to the actual charger. You can search for a "Garmin ball mount" on Amazon as Garmin's GPS units pretty much standardized the size of these mounting balls.

Point is, no matter what form-factor you buy, you can often buy a CD mount or other styles that terminate in such a Garmin mounting ball... hence giving you infinite flexibility in the mounting method.
Examples:

CD-Slot mount: https://www.amazon.com/APPS2Car-Hol...eywords=Garmin+cd+mount&qid=1605796875&sr=8-3

Vent Mount: https://www.amazon.com/APPS2Car-Hol...0&sr=1-1-5e875a02-02b1-4426-9916-8a5c26cd5a14

Flat Plate to be taped or screwed onto things: https://www.amazon.com/Contains-Uni...words=Garmin+ball+mount&qid=1605796995&sr=8-2

Weighted Friction mount: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-1...=Garmin+dashboard+mount&qid=1605797033&sr=8-5

The options really are endless, provided your charger accepts these "balls"

I know there are a lot of CD slot mounts out there but I haven't seen the strip of magnets shared by @FilmIndustryGuy
Yep. This is a cool implementation. I don't like the CD mount slots as they can damage the CD slot, crack the plastic on the dash.

I'd love to know how well @FilmIndustryGuy 's solution works with the MagSafe cases. I don't want to have to put a metal plate on my phone.

@FilmIndustryGuy ‘s solution isn’t actually made for CD slots specifically (nothing goes into the CD slot), he just put his over the slot with the adhesive

Something like this looks nice

I wouldn't order right now because of no reviews and I've never heard of the brand, but this style I think would work best for a secure hold. I'm sure Belkin/Anker/etc will come out with one like this and charge $99 for it

There is a black version on AliExpress I might try. I don't trust the QI charging function of it, but I can determine for myself how strong the magnets are I might just use this type of thing, coupled with a better Garmin-ball mount. For now I'll stick with my old Pro-clip USA (aka Brodit) phone holder

You can try something like this:

Universal CD Slot Magnetic Smartphone Car Mount Holder compatible with all smartphone up to 6" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KT786O0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_lQQTFbYBCNACA

I’m using the dashboard version of this with an Apple MagSafe charger and Apple Silicon case and it’s a strong magnetic hold between all of the products. No plates to glue or put behind your phone.

I ordered this one off of EBay for $25, it’s the closest delivery time I’ve been able to find for one like this which is November 30. I’ll give a review on it once I’m able to spend some time with it.

I can confirm that the MagSafe magnetically locks onto the magnet bar tight. No need for sticki a metal plate to MagSafe. Magnet bar covers many magnets with front rubber meterial. The back is 3M tape included and stays in place like superglue. Too bad MagSafe isn’t black. Also ordered an Anker 2 PD cigarette adapter. One port outputs 30w and the other 18w at same time 48 watt total I’ll test in this soon. This option can be moved around since all magnetic.

Have similar set up as others. Usually have metal plate and attach to a magnet bar. The MagSafe puck attaches to the magnet very firmly and I have an Apple leather case that attaches to the puck. So far so good without any drops while on the road.

Playing around and decided to put on a bumper. The naked back does not work all that well with the MagSafe puck. It holds but will likely pop off when going over a big bump as I was gently jiggling it and with a little extra force it pops off the MagSafe.
