I'd say it is one of Apple's poorest designs. They usually pretty much nail things like user interface and aesthetics, but the MagSafe is clunky looking and inconvenient to use.

I'm not bitter about needing to spend extra money. If Apple come out with an attractive "easel" style vertical charger for their new phones I'd gladly pay them $70 for it - especially if it had selectable slow and fast charging!

I’m really not convinced MagSafe is going to mean the death of the port. At least it’s far longer off in the future than people think. I can’t see this happening for many years. Would Apple really want to make devices that can’t fast charge, or even normal cable charging speeds? What about users of things like DJI drones who need to plug them into a controller? No direct high speed data transfers? Will people want to carry a charging pad or MagSafe everywhere? Will Apple put a MagSafe (even without the power brick) in the box with each new phone? I think they would have to for a few year to begin with. No way is MagSafe the solution to a portless phone imo. Not in it current form anyway, it needs to be much smaller, faster and support data.

i think that MagSafe is the way that Apple wants to take wireless charging with all their devices. They will develop, refine and improve it year on year

MagSafe was not ready...leaving ring imprints in cases and even on the bare phone is absolutely unacceptable. I would embrace MagSafe if it worked without damaging cases. That is total BS. Apple should be ashamed. Fanboys can convince themselves all they want that this is the "future" but until Apple can correct for the imprint issues (and it is an issue, not a "feature") MagSafe cheapens Apple's reputation.

I don't disagree. Imprints on the case and phone is not acceptable and its annoying as hell but this is a gen 1 product and I am sure it will improve. It wouldn't surprise me if the rumoured redesign for the 7th generation watch switches to QI charging with a smaller magSafe puck.

Oh, if they fix the imprint issues, then I am all in for MagSafe. It just kills my how people will apologize for shotty work from Apple. There was another user in a different thread that actually called the imprint part of the MagSafe "experience." That is just ridiculous.

The marks on cases is bad and first night using MagSafe duo it left a mark in my silicone case but takes a few secs to wipe it off but yes not a thing you should expect

I will admit I was quite disappointed with my Magsafe charger for mainly two reasons.
  • Puck wouldn't stay in one spot, flopped all over desk/nightstand
  • Extremely short cord which you can't replace
I can't fix the 2nd one, but I did fix the 1st with this: https://kerfcase.com/products/magsafe-charger-dock?variant=32558071021642

Very happy with it and it has made the charger useable to me as opposed to being something that kept falling off my desk.

It’s nice, but ends up being very expensive in total, and should not have been a problem in the first place. Just seems a bit crazy having to buy an expensive wireless charger, then paying fix it. I realise you had the MagSafe already, to its a good solution for you, but I would rather wait for a third party to come up with a cheaper MagSafe charger like this.

I totally agree, it feels like an unfinished product. I do enjoy it now though with this thoughtful addition. I main thing over a regular wireless charger is that I feel like it's going to charge for sure and I won't knock it over accidentally.

I agreed with you and additional to your comment... if they can fix the heat issues (it generates)... I may go back to it...

Has anyone actually seen many third party MagSafe charging desktop pads (not requiring an Apple MagSafe charger to insert), other than Belkin?

Seems strange to me that so few companies have got behind it. Do they not have confidence in it? Or just think normal wireless is ‘better’ and are sticking with that?

Likely takes time to develop it. Guessing they weren’t aware of it pre release..belkin were

Out of interest, how easy is it to take the puck out, should you want to charge it in your hand?

The only justified place to use the MagSafe charger is on the night stand. It's quite convenient for you to just put the phone at an approximate location over the puck and then it will align itself and start charging. This is especially useful when you want to charge your phone in the dark. However, I tried to use it on my work desk but the cable is too short.

Completely agree. Can’t believe Apple released a product that damages their own (not inexpensive) cases.

Well the silcone cases you can just wipe the mark off. My duo does cause a mark on my silcone case but a quick wipe removes it

I can’t remember the last time i plugged my iPhone into a computer, so a port free phone isn’t an issue to me from that point of view.
The thing is I don’t believe magsafe in its current form is a good alternative to wired charging, hopefully it is improved with future releases.

Can’t be bothered to read the diatribe, title alone is enough to comment. Disagree wholeheartedly. MagSafe works great as does my B&O QI charger which I use nightly cause I’m asleep and don’t care how fast it charges. If I need to charge up quickly I use the MagSafe.

I like the idea of selectable slow and fast charging. As for the easel style, there are several "stands" available that hold your Magsafe puck (much like many Apple Watch charging stands). Sure it would be nice to have an OEM option, but I kind of like the flexibility the "puck" design gives.

Except you aren't "fixing" it. You are adapting it to your preferred use case. My wife always refused to use QI chargers, because she likes to occasionally pick up the charging phone at night to send a quick text or whatever and didn't want the phone to stop "charging" while doing that. She LOVES the fact the puck stays put.

Contrast that with me, I want the puck to stay on the table and NOT come with the phone. Frankly the MagSafe puck design allows for both use cases which makes it IMO better. On my side of the bed, I could have just used a .20 cent piece of dual sided tape or "command strips" to achieve my use case. I opted for a cheap Ali-express weighted base.

In my car, I just used 3m dual-lock fasteners to put the puck on my dashboard. One design fits 3 different use cases...something that other designs would not be able to accommodate.

As far as I now the only reputable 3rd company that currently has a MagSafe (integrated magnets) design is YooTech

At 19.99 it ain't a bad option for nightstand use.

MagSafe .. Use a new chorded product to substitute with another. Mind is blown.

I have the 12 pro and I’m likely going to stay away from anything MagSafe for now.

Can I ask why does your wife not just use a long usb cord over mag safe?

Exactly. Its the exact same thing as using a lighting cable except its slower, damages the leather case, and heats the phone up. What a superior product by Apple!

Several reasons:
  • I bought her the Magsafe puck... so she uses it. She really doesn't care either way much.
  • She damaged a past iPhone charging port (iPhone 6 I think?) by forgetting it was plugged in and walking off with it before it bungeed back.
  • She does like the ease of just dropping the phone onto the puck in a dimly lit room without fumbling for the cord.

Well she doesn't have the leather case. I actually do and have not seen any damage on mine... but she uses silicone case. As for heat, we have not noticed any excess heat issues yet.

Point is... it allows for two types of wireless charging use cases unlike our old-school QI pucks which she refused to use, and I had problems with over the years. I get you may not like the product... but there are people who do.
