OS X Lion for free?

Hey guys,

don't you see the big bug? Let's see..

I buy OS X Lion with one Apple ID and download it. Now get the .dmg-file and install it on any machine, each registered with a different Apple ID at the App Store.

You know what? It works. App Store on each machine says "installed" for OS X Lion, but it's not listed in "purchased"-section - same as if you would install it from a USB stick you bought at the Apple Store in August.

So, why should my family and my friends buy Lion again?
Either updates aren't working for some reason or somebody should meet Steve jobs inside the elevator ...

Any knowledge about this?

Stuck on startup and won't download

I bought mac os x lion from app store and are a boot disc for my brothers mac.. when i try to download it on my mac it won't download, we turned off my brothers computer and put in the disc and now it is stuck on startup with the gray screen and apple logo..
it doesn't go further then that no matter what we do, we have tried to take the disc out and leave it to see if it got further but it doesn't! what should we do?

Let's say that I don't want a clean installation (want to keep my apps, files, preferences etc..), can I just drag this .dmg to the desktop of my other computer(s) and run to upgrade to Lion?

Also, is there any DRM on these? Not that I plan on pirating it, want to know if it'll throw a hissy fit if I try and install it on another family member's iMac who isn't using my iTunes/App Store account.

You bought it with ONE Apple ID. Only using that Apple ID that you purchased Lion can you use it to download it again. Even if they register with their Apple ID, unless they bought it with their own Apple ID, it will say Installed (provided it is installed), but if they want their own copy, they need to buy their own using their Apple ID.

No. You simply put the Lion installer.app that you downloaded from the App Store on the desktop. Sure you could drag the .dmg file to the other computers, but you can also drag the .app!

No DRM. No activation. Just use ethics, respect the developer (Apple) install it on your own personal computers, or one you use.

I purchased Lion on my 15" MBP, then burned a disc, inserte:confused the disc in my 11" MBA's external drive and hit install. I then saw a window saying it was downloading additional components (from where I do not know). That took a few minutes then I got the grey apple splashscreen with log and a spinning beachball...after about 15 minutes I did a force shutdown on the Air and restarted and it installed normally...
Works perfectly...

btw, "AirDrop" is nice to use for transferring files from my MBP to my MBA...gosh, that thing is REALLY fast...transferred a 3.5GB file in about 4 minutes over a 5GHz N connection...Me likey! :D

Yeah, I wiped my hard drive (did a clean install) I wasn't even connected to any router (so no internet) and it "downloaded" components. Strange!

So once Lion is released Apple will do 1 of the 3 choices:

1. Provide a Lion DVD Backup
2. no DVD backup but provide some code to dl Lion from the app store in order to make your own DVD Backup
3. No DVD backup, no dl code. Some new Lion utility to create OS backup.

Which is more likely? I am hoping for option 1.

you can have option 1 if you agree to pay ann additional fee. Nothing from Apple is free.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But isn't (Lion) just released as an update, not full version? I mean, even though it might be possible to burn it onto a disc, you won't be able to perform a clean install using the Lion disc on it's own, skipping snow leopard...?

Just to post my experience:

I'm currently installing Lion on a Macbook that was running TIGER after making a bootable USB. You can't update if you're not running Snow Leopard (the installer will say something like "Can't upgrade from this version of OS X") but if you reformat the drive so it's blank with Disk Utility, it'll start the install process on the drive just fine.

So this would be the equivalent of a clean install for me.

If I copy it to 5.25 floppies, how many will it take?

I've notched them, so they're double sided, if that helps.

LOL. Let's see.. with ProDOS formatting, you get around 140k per side. (DOS 3.3 could also put 140k on a disk, but unless you jumped through some hoops, a copy of DOS would be on there taking up some of the disk, so the usable space was lower. With DOS 3.2's format there was even less, but I don't remember the exact amount)

So given the size of the disk image (4,175,591,424 bytes) and assuming 280k per 5.25" disk, you're looking at 14,564 disks. But since each side of a 5.25" disk is considered a separate disk (Apple's 5.25" floppy drives were single-sided) that's actually 29,127 times that you'll be swapping disks. Have fun, and enjoy the grinding sound. :)

But... you could do the same with CD/DVD of Mac OS X. Buy once, use unlimited copies on as many machines as you liked. No tracking, no activation. Apple still sold hundreds of thousands of family packs.

It works on the principle that most people are decent and will do the right thing.

Wait, so if i buy this, and put it on a disk. Can i insert that disk into my brothers computer and upgrade his to lion? or do i need to buy it again on his computer?

I did the same thing lol...Go to the purchased tab in app store, hold down option and click on the osx lion install button, it will re download for you

All I get is a message :
A newer version of this app is already installed on this computer.
If you want to replace it with this version, move the existing app to the trash.

what do I do now to get the dmg image

Thank you.

I have had a tough day… thank you for making my headache worse by forcing me to laugh really, really hard. If I had been drinking milk at the time I read this...
