Why are people saying the 8/Plus won't sell because "It's basically the 7/Plus with a few minor updates" ...

Wasn't the 6s "Just the 6/Plus with a few minor updates"
Wasn't the 7 "Just the 6s/Plus with a few minor updates"

In reality, it has many updates... don't judge just because they aren't ones you can physically see....

I’m coming from a 7 Plus and getting the 8 Plus. The 7 Plus is great and getting wireless charging, clean-glass design, faster processor, better cameras/features, true-tone display, better speakers and Apples new in-house GPU will make this a welcome upgrade. I don’t get the people hating on the 8 but are pumped about the X. Literally the same phone and specs minus a couple very minuscule things. I guess people really just want the attention of “I have the new iPhone!” And the 8 Plus doesn’t do that from a design perspective.

Having placed my order for the Series III ceramic Apple Watch just after midnight; I'm looking forward to the added convenience of cellular. This truly is a great step forward in the Apple ecosystem.

Even so, I can't help but be a little put off by the keynote with its typical antics that make me feel somewhat embarrassed. The CEO has managed to find a way to blend cheesy with corny in such a way that's truly – oh, let me think – epic! Yes, that's about as original as the phony 'whoo-hoo' sounds that come from the audience. I mean really, who does that? It's like listening to a Homer Simpson cartoon episode.

When the camera pans across the crowd, we see a rather conservative and business-like group of attendees, and I'm hard-pressed to believe there can be that many ‘children’ blurting out ‘whoo-hoo’ on cue with the applause. Never once does the camera capture anyone in the audience performing the whooping. Even when a simple, unremarkable tag line is mentioned by a presenter, with no real visceral impact, we are to believe this stimulates a group of whoopers.

For example, at 25:38, the presenter announces; a heart study, which is commendable but seemingly not worthy of a yippee-ki-yay whoo-hoo, yet it's there! Does the CEO believe we’re that stupid and that we believe this contrived antic is real?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't believe for one second there can be that many adolescents in the audience doing this silly stunt unless they're being paid to do so. In my opinion, it is disingenuous and unnecessarily cheapens the brand.

Umm, don't these Apple Keynote events consist of a large # of Apple employees in the audience? Why shouldn't/wouldn't they "whoop whoop" it up at the slightest thing? There were probably teams in the audience that worked on the watch so why shouldn't they be proud if it's being used front and center in an important study...

I think the pre-orders for 8 will be luke warm [by Apple standards] because a) it's basically the same as the 7 with a few, mostly unseen bells and whistles and b) the "hard -core" apple supporter will wait for the X.

Ultimately, I don't think this incarnation of the X will sell in the numbers of a usual Apple flagship, because in the main, the man on the street, who doesnt take an interest in tech, but just likes the latest trinket will be alarmed by the price of this and others, e.g. Note 8 etc. £1000-1200 for a phone is insane.

I spent sometime playing with a Note 8 this morning, whist I have no intention of buying one, it is a very nice looking phone, but to be frank, I can buy my wife and myself a pair of GS8's for the same number and get 90% of the features. I think folks will consider the same maths when the X is released.
You are right. When I moved to S8, for a few weeks, I had a buyer's remorse. But now I don't feel anything. In fact I am pretty amazed sometimes when I look at the screen.

With the bezel less design, it's now hard to differentiate iPhone and Galaxy. Of course besides the notch. So I don't know how much cool factor Apple is holding now or will be holding when all the phones looks almost same.

I think the screen and form factor are massive things to consider, though.

The iPhone 8 has huge ugly bezels and its design is tired and dated. I think people are sick of that when compared to what other companies are offering for the same price or cheaper.

I have a 6s and I would sooner by a 7 because I see no value in the 8. I would love to get the X at some stage because I really like the design, the screen is big and beautiful, and it offers that much more to me. Granted it's very expensive and I'd have to see if I can even offered it as a graduate.

iPhone 8 is not enough for me to upgrade from my 6 and the X is way too much money for a phone. I don't want to unlock my phone with my face...
I had a 6. The 6S is night & day faster. I was never impressed with the 6. 6S felt worlds ahead.

2GB RAM helped a lot

The 6S single core score in Geekbench was a 63% improvement over the 6.

If you're still happy with it that's great, but you're lying to yourself if you don't think anything that's come since is a huge improvement.

I'm not at all surprised that with the iPhone X coming in a month+, that the typical early morning slipping of new stock has not been the usual case with the release of the iPhone 7 (Glas)S and iPhone 7 (Glas)S Plus edition phones, aka iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Yeah...just like many others have said, I really don't care what people think of my purchasing a new iPhone 8.

1. Every iPhone I've ever owned has been reliable as hell.
2. I currently own a 6, and the body is about the ONLY thing that hasn't been changed in the last 3 years.
3. Getting a $200 credit from AT&T for this, dropping the actual cost of the 8 to $499.

Those are good enough reasons for me. *shrug*

I did not update because to me the 8 Plus is a minor update to the 7 Plus. It does get more features but had this not been an anniversary year the additional updates given to the X would have been on the 8/8Plus. My guess. I won't say dont upgrade because there are many new things. I am saying I did not upgrade because it was not enough for me. If I had anything older than a 7 Plus I would have done it.

Glass back and wireless charging are not a draw for me. I use a case and I can add wireless charging to my current phone. True Tone is the same display being actively color managed. I do think its nice but not a draw for me to upgrade. Each year we get a faster processor, that is a draw for me but at the moment not enough because I use my phone right now without ever wishing my processor was faster. Again, I would not tell someone not to upgrade but I personally did not want to part with money for what was offered. I might go for the X just because it is new but then again I might just wait until next year. This will only be the second time since the original iPhone I sit out for a bit and see how it goes.

Imagine adding another 2-3 months to that wait time and that's likely what lies ahead. :p

I'm a little surprised, a little not, that the 8 series preorder went as smooth. I wonder if there were no X, what 8 ship times would be looking like this morning.
Hopefully I can get my order in pronto :D

I imagine the 8 would have been a lot like the 7 if not for the X (apart from the whole jet black debacle). I was too late to preorder so I went and got it on release day from a local Verizon store, but I had to go with the 256GB since the lower models were sold out (I don't regret this at all now though).

Yeah...I'm confused as to why the 8 isn't seen as a decent upgrade when it's getting almost all of the upgrades in the X.

The main reason is form factor. It is the same form as the previous three years. New internals but same external. It used to be a new design every two. Not saying I mind, just answering the question with my best guess.

This. Coming from a 6, I'm getting

- double the RAM
- better screen
- FAR faster processor
- more reliable Touch ID sensor
- water resistance
- newer BT
- wireless Qi charging

And that's just the stuff I can think of. I mean hey, don't get me wrong - I'd like a spiffy form factor and better screen as much as any nerd/geek might, but I'm sure as hell not gonna pay a grand for it. I'm not even paying $699 for it; paying $499 (after $200 trade-in credit with AT&T).

I believe that the iPhone 8 models will be one of Apple's poorest sellers in years. I don't say that pessimistically. The 8/8 Plus model are essentially the iPhone 6 (from four years ago) in terms of design, and they offer only slightly marginal improvements over the 7.

The real seller, of course, will be the true flagship of the crop, the iPhone X. The people wanting the latest and greatest are going to purchase the X, not the 8. It'll cost you $200-300 more; but come on, that was the plan all along. ;) Increase the average selling price of the iPhone and you increase revenue, even amidst lower sells. Same strategy adopted with the iPad Pro models.

And when we’re playing all the same AR games as the X boyz, we can do so while holding our phones with a decent grip without obscuring the screen. That’s the benefit of bezels, you don’t need pincers to hold the device.

I just ordered a 256G silver 8+ for delivery by the 22nd. Surprised at the availability. I should have gone black, but figured that I didn't want to risk a sellout trying to get black, which I would imagine would be the hotter selling color.

Oh, going from a 6+ to the 8+. Looking forward to a battery lasting more than 24 hours.

Hope you won't regret it. I did the exact same thing when 6s was released and absolutely hated the white front. It is distracting when consuming media, especially video. I think you'll still get your black one when you order it now. You should probably even consider just ordering the black one without cancelling silver.

Yeah...I'm confused as to why the 8 isn't seen as a decent upgrade when it's getting almost all of the upgrades in the X.

I may be wrong but after reading the spec sheets on both, the X has dual OIS and a slightly better aperture. For me, there will be no noticeable difference. Oh, and the portrait front facing camera for those who so desire lol I’ll take the tried an true design of the 8 Plus and continue to enjoy Touch ID.

Let me confirm your concerns.

After seeing what they released, I'm hoping to making it through 2018 with my 6S from Oct 2015.
Ayo! I kept my iPhone 5 for four years. There's a certain appreciation you get for a device after owning it for that amount of time. You look down at it and think "we've been through a lot together." Haha. That sounds ridiculous, but you get what I'm saying. It's kind of like a car in that regard.

He's not wrong, I had to look it up and on Google Trends it's all about Nike, with the most searches coming from the Philippines and Ukraine (sneaker-happy places).

It's been a word since 1941, but usage has picked up in the last 3-4 years, likely due to Nike.

Color is a fine word - no need to pick up this usage.
True. When I hear colorway, I think shoes where the official color is actually a combination e.g. Obsidian/grey/white or Red/anthracite/white.
iPhones are just Silver, Gold, Space Grey: one color.

Does this mean that supply was better this year? Perhaps it could also be faster on-demand manufacturing? I have no doubt that the iPhone X was going to steal market share from the iPhone 8 which would boost Apple’s profit by quite a large margin due to the price difference. Apple Watch Series 3 however I’m only seeing mild shift in delivery dates at this time and Apple TV 4K is practically available.

Thats probably because. Everything is fundamentally flawed. iWatch has 18 battery. aTV is twice the price it should be and the phone is exactly the same as it has been for the last 4 years and if you want the X SAMSUNG DOES IT BETTER.

I have to be honest the Galaxy S8 is the first android phone that made me question my loyalty to Apple. For the first time ever I did not pre-order an iPhone since the first gen and I have not even considered the X pricing being my main reason as I now have other priorities. They want $999 for the entry level X and could not even offer it with 128GB but offer a 256 for $1149? I might have considered it if the $999 price was for 128GB but 64? This is the first time I will go without a yearly upgrade and who knows. Some people can justify any purchase based on "I just want it" but for me this is the time where I don't seem to justify the cost.

People want other people to know they have a new one. Somehow a $1k phone makes people feel like they’re rich, and they want people to notice. I just laugh at the “the 8 isn’t different enoug.” What they mean is, “it doesn’t look different so how will they know I upgraded?!”

Not surprising - Apple shot themselves in the foot this year.

Who wants an 8 that looks identical to a 7? The odd person that appreciates 4k at 60p? Everyone else will appreciate the price drop in 7 more or go the full hog and cough up 1k for the X...
Has wireless charging and new colors and more stuff under the hood....
