LOL! I'm not the least bit upset, just exasperated with Tim Apple's Pipeline of Wonders.
Yeah the pace of change is amazing, hard to keep up with, definitely. I feel your pain. Tim Apple has introduced so many iPads, Macs, iPhones and Watches over the last few years, it would be nice if he’d take a little breather. But it looks like there’s no end in sight :(

Apple has already priced me out of the market :(

I opted for a Lenovo X1E, the configuration that I opted for cost me 2260 (with incentives) - 4k/32GB/1TB 3 year extended warranty, had I bought a MBP with that configuration it would have run me 4,600 dollars.

Hmm... this is a weird one, I would have rather bought a 2-3 year old MBP instead of a windows laptop. macOS is still the king

Not me, Apple has been selling 2015 refurbs in the 2k range, that's 4 year old technology. Instead I spent 2k on a brand new machine that faster and more expandable.

macOS is still the king
Windows has it own advantages, both platforms have their set of advantages and disadvantages.

I don't want to derail this thread on a windows vs. mac discussion, other then state that Apple's premium pricing effected my purchase decisions

f the 16” just replaces the 15.6”, I’d expect it to be around $2,399. If it’s still 16GB/256GB base, anyway.
In all honesty, I'd be surprised if they price the 16" at such a low level. I think what will happen is that they'll keep the base 15"for 2,400 and offer the 16" as the high end option. I'd say it will start off at 2,999 and go up from there

Outside of a slightly larger screen, and new keyboard what do you think the new MacBook Pro would have? Do we think they will go silver only for this line?

I think they will most likely keep the space gray option, its very popular. Outside of the screen and possible keyboard change it will be a spec bump.

The recent Apple cycle:
  1. Be smart and spend 3 years saving up a ton of money for a new MacBook Pro so that by the time your current one is obsolete, you can afford a new one
  2. However, new MacBook Pro turns out to be terrible, with unusable keyboard, and the last good one is the one you already own and is obsolete
  3. Hold off on buying new MacBook Pro, wait for redesign
  4. Redesign costs more, you don't have enough money
  5. Save up for another year
  6. MacBook Pro price increases again, not enough money
  7. ...
I don't know how regular people are affording the current one, let alone the probably even more expensive redesign. I mean Macs have always been more expensive than other brands, but regular not-so-well-off people like students and artists could still afford them. Now you'd have to be some kind of top 1% millionaire rich person to buy a Mac, especially if you factor in that you'll have to keep spending a lot of money on getting it repaired (which usually means replaced since these things are only designed to break, but not to be repaired).

I don't get why prices aren't going down. Tech is becoming more affordable over time, yet prices are going up. Why?

I just want a fast laptop that runs macOS. I don't need a touch bar, I don't need TouchID or FaceID, I don't need it to be super mega thin, and I sure as hell don't need it to have a dead keyboard. Keep the price reasonable and let normal people continue to use Macs.

You hit the nail on the head. I am taking good care of my 13 inch Early 2015 MBP. With each sticker shock revision, Apple is juicing customers because they know many of us are holding onto older gen products longer.

Late 2021 is looking like the year I upgrade. I am using it as part of my last generation of Apple products I buy. After that I will take things slowly and switch back to a very cheap Linux or Windows notebook and Android smartphone; putting behind the increasingly expensive Apple ecosystem than it already is.

At end of the day, aesthetics and macOS is why I still prefer it, but coming from a Windows background and using Linux regularly for while back, I should fit right in.

As for pricing, I expect this new 16 inch to easily start at 3,299. I hope Apple at least bumps the storage to 512 GBs at least.

I think it actually makes a ton of sense to make the display in the “educational” iPad model 10,2” if, and only if, that doesn’t change the overall chasis of the device. That would mean every cover or accessories made for the current and 5th generation model still works in the new, bigger display iPad. Even more important, it would reduce costs and maybe it can stay at the same price, quite cheap IMO.

I bought a new iPad 5th generation for less than 230€ for my mum and another one for around 260, 6th generation, for my aunt. They are basically the only technological device they really use fluently and doesn’t give them any headaches, is just a wonderful device with incredible value for the money. I hope they keep making this entry-level device, slowly improving it, for as long as the iPad lineup exists. The 10,2” with iPadOS just looks perfects for my little cousin as her first computer and creativity device.

I really don’t see a MBP lineup of 13”, 15”, 16”. Apple’s pricing is driven by their BOM cost, and I don’t see how a slightly larger screen could add very much cost.

I think it’s more likely just a bezel shrink, with slightly larger screen in a slightly smaller physical enclosure. I expect the 13.3” to become a 14” when it gets the new design.

re: the Lenovo, if one doesn’t care about MacOS it seems like a decent machine. Back when I was in corporate IT in the 2000s we used to buy tons of ThinkPads (though it was still IBM then); I much preferred over Dell Latitude with no other alternatives seriously considered.

that's a good

question: what would we actually like to see added to the current models?
And no, not the easy answer as (back to) SD-card reader, USB-A, Ethernet, etc. Already have that on my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012 ;-)

Honestly, is there anybody really super happy with the touch bar, as in using it a lot/can't live without it?
Does it really makes the difference between pro and non-pro?

what about expandability? like being able too later on add RAM (which has always been insanely expensive but one had to buy the amount needed/thought to be needed in the future, when buying the new machine.

I also do not really mind if it's a bit thicker, if that would be required for additional items, but have no idea what I am missing other than a floppy drive and DVD player :D

• Memory upgrade prices are atrocious.
• Starting at 128Gb for computer is a joke.
• If something breaks then it breaks like a disposable toy. No chance to replace HD or RAM yourself. And it’s good if there’s an Apple service nearby. But what if not? Not to mention the cost of the repairs.

People say they replace their new MacBook keyboards for 2nd time in a year. Considering all that I can’t imagine how such machine at such price can be considered a usable computer at all, especially a ‘Pro’ one. Steve certainly wouldn’t be happy.

10.2"? How many g-d different sizes is Apple going to **** out? 12.9, 10.5, 9.7, 7.9 and now 10.2. Why not add 11.65 and 12.376 and 8.9999451 while they're at it?
GAWD really! I am a heavy iPad user and have 3 of them now and even I'm confused!

You can get a brand new MacBook 15” 2017 for £1700 or the 2018 for £1800 on eBay from reputable sellers.

$299 iPad 6th gen 128gb at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago will last my daughter at least 3 years or longer (A7 2016 processor)

iPads are commodities. Apple is just gonna to drive its own price lower and lower for 90% of the population that doesn’t want a pro model. . But people are gonna to keep them longer.

Honestly I think the iPad Air 3 is the best value right now. I got it $389 military discount no sales taxes. Great value.
A10, not A7 but yeah, great price for the 128GB; easily 3 years of life. Agree re: the Air 3. Few really need the Pro models, including me... but I still want one :)

My goodness, it seems as though there's an updated product coming out every 6 months now. You buy a product and before the warranty is up, it's already outdated. Technology sure is moving fast. I wonder if all these "upgrades" are really necessary and worth it.

You should consider moving to Windows. You can get a brand new, malware infested POS that will last you two frustrating years with no customer service for $399.

You can get a brand new MacBook Air for $1,200. Not sure why you think Mac is “1%”. Really should not take avg person 5 years to save for that

The thing is, I need the performance of the top end MacBook Pro for the video work I do, I like macOS a lot and really don't like Windows. I have always been okay with paying more for a Mac than for a PC. Using MacOS saves time as it requires no maintenance (no more lost days/weeks reinstalling Windows or messing with drivers every year), and time being money, it's worth it.

However, recently, the amount of price increases to Macs is too much for me. The work I do pays enough to buy me a new Mac every 3 or so years. That is, until now. While Mac prices have nearly doubled, my pay hasn't (and it wouldn't be realistic for my pay to double in just a few years). Therefore I find that the prices of Macs are unfair towards those who have gotten used to them and who have been loyal to the brand, as now people like me are outpriced.

In addition, Apple creates a tight ecosystem which is designed to keep people from leaving. That's fine as long as people can afford to stay. But keeping people from leaving while increasing the price more and more is not right, they're basically punishing people for being in their ecosystem.

Also, historically, Apple has usually had fairly reliable and repairable products, so even if you bought an expensive Mac and it broke, you could get it fixed and continue to use it without having to buy a new one. Today, unless you're within the ridiculous, sub-standard 1 year warranty or you paid extra for 3 years of warranty and are within those 3 years, you can't repair the computer for any reasonable amount of money. This means that you cannot budget towards a new computer because there's no way to know whether it will last 1 year or 6 years. Saving up this much money takes time, and if you just spent money on a computer a year ago, you may not be able to afford another one just yet.

Doubt they will be debuting a completely redesigned MBP with just a spec bump, especially if they try and command ridiculous prices.

Pretty sure this will be the MBP we have all been waiting for...new design, bezel-less screen..10nm...LPDDR4..Navi etc especially if they ship in Q4

Lol I disagree but we’ll see. With what you want in it it would be $3500 for the base model.

I still think that the 16" would be nice but since it is the first iteration of its kind, it's prone to more issues. Plus the pricing will be interesting to see with the specs they give.
I'm guessing above $3,000 for 256GB SSD lol
