Wait, you think having been on a forum longer is an indicator of age? It is, in no way, a better machine - at any price. It's not even what any reasonable person would call portable. How you miss this with those 5 extra years of forum wisdom is beyond me.
It's beyond your basic math skills that 13 years ago I joined the forum and you think I'm still in highschool. And I guess I'm not reasonable either 'cause I'm just so strong lol

You're ignoring what a bunch of people has said, like programs that are mac os only. So the price is only better if you define it for a use case that you've decided. I can think of a handful of professions that this update today is great for, and they would never dream of touching an alienware computer.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the MBP, I just think the first post I quoted, the people who think like that are doing themselves and others a disservice by being condescending while being completely wrong.

Are you just talking abut something do not understand, or do you actually have a touchbar MBP? I have one, and I like it a lot.

Glad you like it. I have one. I don't want a machine that requires me to "wake up" a touchbar, open the media controls, and select what I want. What used to be one keystroke with a dedicated key is now three key strokes. I've spent a lot of money on iTunes and I constantly play music in the background. I don't need extra steps added for no reason. Touchbar is a gimmick that adds nothing.
I'm glad you like it. Not for me. And if Apple would just make the non touchbar version with the same specs as the touchbar I'd buy it. But they don't. So, I don't want their new machines.

If I mistook you, my bad. I in no way wanted to be snarky. I just find it frustrating that so many people are missing the point of what these computers are for, or that they're a bad value. I'm hugely annoyed about the computer keyboards still (I'm not a fan) but I'm glad apple's at least keeping laptops going.

If it didn't have the touchbar, I'd give you the money. :)
They could even leave in the (rest of the) TouchBar, if they made the damn Esc key a real key again. I want to be able to rest my finger on it without activating it, and tell by feel that my finger is in the right place. I want to be able to press the Esc key without looking and with tactile feedback several hundred times a day.

First off, I've been here 5 years longer than you. You're clearly extra butthurt today lol
I do plenty of work on my MacBook Pro and my Alienware PC, but tell me more about how you do this real world stuff. Oh wait, wrong thread. This thread is about how you added a still, even better feature to the Alienware 17, a 17" 2160p anti-glare screen, a feature I think a lot of people here desire for a Macbook Pro, and it came out to ~$100 more, and then you said those small price differences mean nothing. Ok. It's still a far better machine for the price. For. The. Price.

Edit: I don't know what you did, but it's still $50 less than the MacBook Pro w/ the better 4K screen lmao

So you lug around a 17+ lb carpet bag everyday to and from work.
10 lb Alienware pc
It’s 2.5 lb power brick
4lb MacBook Pro plus it’s powerbrick
and whatever else you might need.

That is dedication.

I use to have a time capsule drive connected via ethernet and then wirelessly accessible via my other computers but it was a slow experience but I'm sure its all come along way since then.

Are you saying with a synology NAS I could ditch all cloud services, even dropbox and keep all computers in sync with it? would Mac OS photos library live on the NAS and work with multiple computers i.e. a shared family photo library that my wife can access on her laptop?

is it also accessible if I was working away from home?

sorry for all the questions :)

Absolutely. I am a total convert. Been a Synology fanboy for the last 5 years. Here's what comes built in no matter how much storage you put in it:

  • Plex Media Server (stream all of your content to the Plex App on AppleTV)
  • iTunes Server (you see all of your music in any iTunes or remote app in the house as it broadcasts itself as an iTunes Home sharing server)
  • Office 365 / Google Docs replacement (collaboration and web based document editing
  • CloudStation, works on iOS, Mac, Windows, Android and is a 100% DropBox replacement
  • Photo storage accessible in an app or browser w/ machine learning so it can name people, detect certain objects similar to photos for Mac / iOS
  • Built in antivirus that's free
  • 100% compatibility with Time Machine
  • SMB/AFS drives so you can mount on your mac
  • lots of collaboration features for people who you make users on the NAS
  • Remote access via VPN or an open web-socket (they call it QuickConnect)

...and a lot more!

You can do a ton of side-loaded applications as well like an RSS reader that can read Bittorrent RSS Files then a torrent client so when a new show is posted you love, it auto downloads, moves to your Plex folder and boom it's on your AppleTV.

Lots of NASes out there but Synology is the most turn-key for people who aren't server experts.

Oh and there's no subscription. Every Synology has these features. the only thing worth spending extra money for is one with hardware acceleration to transcode video for Plex. The nicer Synology boxes will transcode video for you which is nice.

How much did you pay for your 4TB nVME SSD, 32GB DDR4, i9 4.8GHz 6 core laptop with 4 thunderbolt ports?

Is there even a laptop that powerful on Windows?

Thanks for insulting us.

Check out the Dell Precision 5530. You can spec it pretty close but I only see 2TB NVMe. That puts you a little over $4K.
Are we complaining because Apple gives a select few people the OPTION to spec their machine to this price point? There's a lot to complain about, but I think we want Apple to provide options! If I had the need, I'm glad I could get 4TB of SSD storage in my portable computer. I don't have a need for that though. If they had a 128GB of RAM option, I'm glad that the people who need it could spend $20k to get one.

For the rest of us who need a Macbook Pro there are other options that will likely fit our budget for this kind of computer.

You've been around here a while. I'm sure you've seen all the braggarts who always buy the top spec. Apple is turning the screws making them feel the pain!

I think the options are awesome! I don't need all of them together but I know I can put together the perfect BTO getting everything I want and less of what I don't. I'm at about $3500 for what I need / want.

So its all down to personal financial stature. What is wrong with this world today. If you can spend a fraction of the money and achieve the same results then whats the big deal.

Probably the same reason people don’t like to be told what to do with their money or how to raise their kids.

You could but they have a choice so what’s the big deal.

It's more expensive.

2TB, with Dell prices costs $1,456.84

That's without the CPU, without the tree TB 3.0 ports, without many things from the MBP.

Apple could be just picking here at which would sell better at the huge price tag.. Macbook Pro 2018, iMac 5k, or the 2013 Mac Pro (would be last on the list)

going by price only

and for that money, I could buy a nicely specced mid-tier 2017 27” iMac and pay for two semesters of school.

I get it that it’s state-of-the-art SSDs and RAM inside, but Apple also like to fill their pockets by increasing the cost lately. If the machines and software were rock solid stable, I wouldn’t mind as much.

"two semesters of school." LOL!!! Where are you attend Udemy!

You forgot to add the price for the dongles!!!!

For $6699 you can't download from an SD card, plug in a ethernet cable, connect to HDMI, connect any legacy hard drives, etc etc.

You can't put cart wheels on cars, either.

Plus an additional $379 for AppleCare to get a 3 year warranty, which should come as standard IMHO.

It does in Australia :)

Seriously... what is Apple smoking? A $7K laptop?!?

It's called reality, and that certain prosumers/professionals require certain capabilities.

I swear that I have pure disgust, from an intellectual standpoint, for at least 80% of the commenters on this forum now. Vacuous is a charitable description for them, imo.

I thought (by reading all these forums) that everyone here wanted updated Macs.
Now that we have them, everyone is birthing about them...
What gives..? Get life.

I honestly believe that they lack the level of consciousness and sentience required to get one, at this point.

I'll wait till 2050 when B&H sells them for $9
put some masking take over it

Most PeeCee users think a Levonvo i3 is the same processor as i9 Six Core

I AGREE
that said there was enough space above the keyboard they could've left the function keys and still done the touchbar
So my vote is for that
