I just got back from Maxfields. I got there at 10:15AM and was handed the 79th ticket. They handed out 81. The security guys walking around said they only had 42mm Space Grey watches and 38mm sports watches in white, blue and green. They didn't get any stainless steel or editions in, and he said he hasn't seen any that weren't already reserved for preorders.
They only had one register open, so the line was moving extremely slowly (roughly 10 people an hour). The rule is one watch per person per day, with a maximum of 6 lifetime. Within 30 minutes of the store opening they were out of 42mm watches. That means that of the 81 they had in stock, less than 10 were 42mm.
Virtually no one in line wanted a 38mm, so it became a queue with the sole purpose of preordering. I hung around for a little longer and finally left because the line was moving so slowly. I may go back this weekend and place a preorder.
Key points:
1. If you want to get a popular watch, get there before the sun rises. There are people camping out every night and they get the best selection. One guy sold his space in line for $150.
2. If you are going to preorder, don't bother showing up before 2 or 3PM. You can preorder until the store closes at 7PM and so far the orders have been filled within two or three days.
3. Once you have your ticket, you are free to leave and come back. However, if they call your number while you're away, you're SOL.
