Do you think that they still have any 42mm Space Grey in stock?

Just called. They do have them. However, they are at capacity and not taking any additional people today and will continue tomorrow. As far as how many they have left, I have no idea, but I was told they will definitely have them tomorrow. The crappy thing is they open at 11am, so that's one long camp out if anyone decides to do it.

My Morning at Maxfield thread should have been a long post...

On April 10th, I placed my order for a 42mm SS watch w/bright blue leather loop. I thought it was curious when the screen blinked from an early shipping date of 4/24-5/8 to 5/13-5/27, but no matter, I'd go for it anyway. I kept my fingers crossed for an early shipping date and had a bit of hope when I received confirmation of my order at 12:02am PST. Alas, most of us are now aware there very well may be a problem with leather loop orders, and my band choice was one of the most unfortunate where luck and "earlyish" shipments were concerned. Oh well, I'd just wait it out, even with a bitter taste slowly developing around this launch whenever I thought of the procession of celebrities brandishing their watches for all of the regular people (now, apparently, second-class citizens) to lust after. An extra dash of poor planning, poor communication, and the hint of customer disrespect didn't help matters. But I have thick skin, and after all a corporation is just that; they are neither family nor friend and they don't owe me anything other than what I pay for.

Fast forward to April 23rd, yesterday, when I heard Maxfield in Los Angeles (an 18-minute drive from my house) would have stock available starting at 9:00am today. Reports varied regarding the breakdown of the inventory, but it seemed like something to consider since canceling my pre-order after a successful brick and mortar purchase would be easy enough. The potential line around the block though...that was just not my scene at all.

Last night, I couldn't sleep. Too many visions of reluctant bright blue leather loops too shy to be seen wrapped around the wrists of the common man and woman ricocheting inside my head. I woke at 4:37am; slipped out of bed lest my wife confirm what she's always suspected, i.e., I'm just too geeky to share a life with; slipped into some warm clothes; put together a haphazard waiting-in-an-Apple-launch-line-bag filled with headphones, iPad, water, and snacks; and drove over to Melrose. The line waiting for me stretched around the building, but after a quick headcount, I guessed I was probably around the 100th to 120th person waiting for "my precious" in the darkness.

To keep this from turning into the longest post ever (please don't let it be), I'll speed through what happened next: after seven hours in line and only about 60 people ahead of me having already purchased their watches, a rumor started to float that all 42mm SS watches had been sold out. I'll say this again in a different way. The only store in the United States where Apple made the decision to have stock available to the masses ran out of 42mm SS watches after 60 customers! And, surely, not all of those customers chose stainless steel watches as the majority were bubbling about their sport purchases while they walked past the lowly legion of losers who had just spent seven hours of their lives they'd never get back for nothing. Suffice it to say, I gave my ticket (yes, they issued tickets for order) to a fellow sufferer and left the line empty-handed. By the way, tickets in my position were selling to a sketchy band of Russians for $100-$300 a pop!!! The world has gone crazy.

Well, it's not necessarily true that my wait was for nothing. I met a truly warm group of people during this time. From the Filipino-American psychology student; to the brother and sister duo respectively taking a break from his day at the advertising company and her J.D/M.B.A studies; to another young man from Guangzhou, China two years into his American adventure; to the ex-bookstore owner who years ago realized her business was doomed when she was playing with her iPhone and ended up on Amazon and considered purchasing a book there; to the 20 or 30something year-old Floridian pastor one month from becoming a father and who had travelled with a group of friends from West Covina; to the tall "Parenthood"/"Californication"cameraman.

They made the last seven hours memorable.

Apple, on the other hand, has seen better launches and my fingers are crossed (again) that they return to celebrating the process regular customers experience purchasing their products and give it the same import and priority as they seemingly have for the celebrities they shower with aluminum, steel, and gold. Have fun with your watches!

Fit and finish, however, is a little tiny bit off. I can see a small peek of ribbon cable on the top right of the display as if the screen is, like, one degree off of perfectly mounted. It only shows up in bright sunlight when the screen is off, but definitely something that wasn't present in the try-on models and may be something I can swap it out at the Apple Store for. I'll try to get pics of this tonight.

Perhaps that's why it's in short supply. They don't want fit and finish to be off. The Stainless Steel I have is flawless.

They had 38mm of pretty much everything all day. It was least popular I think.

When I went in, they still had 38mm stainless milanese and both 38mm sport finishes.

I don't get it. The 38mm looks great, and I'm happy I went with it. It looks more like a watch on my wrist and less like a "smartwatch." That's what I want. It's easy to read, too.

I ordered on April 11th (42mm space grey sport) and got the June time window because we were basically told it was unlikely any stores would have stock. Why are people able to get them at ONE boutique in California instead of people who preordered? Have there been people who got space grey sport 42s in the mail today? I still think it is bogus that they sold them at this boutique before fulfilling PRE-orders. Sure I may not be "entitled" to one on launch day because I pre ordered a day after it went live, but if anyone who ordered in the first five minutes doesn't get their space grey 42 sport that is a major fail. And actually, if I pre ordered, how come someone who didn't gets one before me? Not a fan of this system.

Yeah, its not perfect, and I'm assuming they're having lots of issues manufacturing to the tolerances required for a perfect watch. Or the tolerances are crappier on the sport?

It all depends on wrist size. The 38 looked okay on my wrist, but the 42 was a better fit and it comes with better battery life to boot. I couldn't settle for the 38.

I mean, there were probably 300 watches total. It's not a massive impact to preorders as they decided to sell watches at a single store in the entire country.

I agree this launch is pretty ****ed up, but I'm not sure a batch of ~300 watches for boutique purchase in a fashion-centric city made a massive dent in preorders. And we worked insanely hard for our purchase. 14 hours from getting in line to out the door with a watch, and that's for me in 84th place. I'm sitting at work now barely awake.

I don't disagree. You certainly earned your watch. However, this is just another example of Apple playing favorites to those in the "rich/fashion" world - not saying you're in that group- and not allowing all of us a same chance to get one if we wanted to also camp out. Yes it is probably about supply but their website also says orders are "exclusively online". Oh so their excuse will be that the ones purchased at max fields today we're not orders but on the spot purchases. Whatever. I love apple products, I'm just a little peeved at the moment. Haha I should have pre ordered without trying on first and returned it if I didn't like it. That being said, some people ordered at 12:08 and aren't getting this watch today.

Apple decided to give the finger to their loyal customers and instead cater to the crowd they want to be a part of.

Offering watches at a shop like Maxfield Los Angeles may have pumped up Apples ego, but it did nothing except irritate the Maxfield staff. The average gross profit per sale, even if only a single item is dramatically more than any model of Apple Watch.

Furthermore Apple Watch is nothing more than a slight curiosity to the uber wealthy that are Maxfield regulars. The store gained nothing from this arrangement, nor did they even realize what they were getting into. The average person that doesn't live at this level of the stratosphere is clueless and that is NOT a criticism. Not at all.

Of course Maxfield customers bypassed the line and walked right in. These are highly coveted patrons that never stand in line anywhere for anything. Nor did they come in today for an Apple Watch. In the event it ended up being one item of many other items, it's only because they discovered it..after..they entered the store. Most being mega millionaires and billionaires their business makes Maxfield what it is.

Apple got what they wanted... Headlines.

Ive never heard of them either. Its great marketing for them, but do you think they paid apple to carry the watch?? How much could a boutique pay to influence a bohemoth like apple? Even 20 million would be pennies for Apple.

Respectfully had you read my post, you would have noticed where I stated, those who don't live in the same stratospheric level as Maxfield customers are clueless.

They don't want or need mainstream business. They don't care that you've never heard of them. The customers that matter already know about them.

Their customers walk out having spent $50,000 or more without a second thought. You can't possible understand or believe the lifestyle they lead.

Your post proves it.

This wasn't for Maxfield's benefit. The stuff at Maxfield's cost more than some of us make in a year. This was for Apple's benefit. They wanted the watch associated with high end boutiques, because they're positioning it as a fashion item. I'm certain that Apple paid Maxfield's for this arrangement, not the other way around.

Before this thread turns into another war, I just wanted to post an update. I just got off the phone with them. They are done for the day. Not sure what they're doing with the people still there, but THEY WILL GET ANOTHER SHIPMENT TOMORROW. They can't verify what models they'll receive, but they will definitely have stock tomorrow. Also, they were certain it will be a zoo again like today. The rep sounded EXHAUSTED.

Retail, AFAIK.

I'm not sure Maxfield's will continue to get supplies of the watch after this weekend while inventory is so limited. I think this was more of a publicity stunt than anything.

is anybody still actually there, waiting in line in advance for tomorrow?
anyone plan on camping out??

Having done it, I'll say that that the camping out part is super pleasant. I would almost do it again. I had nothing bad to say about the 4am to 9am I was there this morning. The part that IS truly insufferable is watching the painfully slow and often disrespectful way that things start happening once Maxfield "opens". The line works at a trickle.
The line will go a half an hour with NOTHING happening.
You will watch the privileged regulars be ushered right past you and see them leave with bags of watches and bottles of Maxfield water.
If you ever do get to the front you WILL get to experience how weird it is to go from a being treated like a pathetic nobody to getting the royal treatment from the staff once it becomes all about you. It turns on a dime.
I just kept thinking about how great retail giants like H&M and The Gap know how to keep a line moving quickly. This is like whatever the opposite of that is and I understand the LAST thing Maxfield wants to be like is (eye-roll) H&M.

If anyone is there - PLEASE let us know if there's already a line forming! You'll be my personal hero :-D

Do you think this might have been an eye-opener for them and they'll handle tomorrow differently?

Do you think this might have been an eye-opener for them and they'll handle tomorrow differently?

I tried talking to some of the Apple guys when it was all said and done and explained my frustration to them. Their response was "Unfortunately this is not an Apple Event. This is a Maxfield Event. They are a retail partner but this is not an Apple Event."
I disagreed and told him so, explaining that if there is a team of Apple people brought in to handle the Event, and Apple publicizes the Event, then you can't just take credit for the good and soak up the publicity and write off all the bad stuff as being Maxfield's fault.
The one eye opening part of our conversation is that when I brought up the Russian Mob that was putting a real damper on the day he explained to me that this is something they have to contend with at every launch event. It was bad here but nothing like what they've had to try to solve with China and other international markets.
I can see that they are up against some persistent folks.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the day, other than the nice people I met, was observing the Russian ring and discovering how much bigger it was than I first suspected. There was an obvious group of loud young guys, nervously pacing up and down the line buying people's spots and convincing people to buy them watches... But in the shadows were several generations of not so obvious shot-callers, with cars parked on both sides of the street, and back-seats piled with Apple Watches by the day's end.

It's a trip. If anyone goes tomorrow, I'm sure they'll be back.
