what about the white Macbook?
do you think the Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy would fit in my macbook (mid 2007)

Thanks in advance,

no sorry, the 2007 one has a diffrent connector, you must have a optical sata connector, yours has the older OBHD connector you will have to buy one from newmodus.com which is cheap....$40.

yep, I'm going to get 2 SATA2 HD for replacing my old HD and optical drive, I just got a response from newmodus.com and they say it would fit which is OBHD9-SATA-B, do you think they are right?

Following attachment shows the interface at the back of my optical drive

Thanks for that,

I am so interested in this mod.
Will all these modding fit/work with MBP 13?
I guess the size and shape of optical bay drive is all same across MBPs?
My CD/DVD usages are very minimal so I am thinking of getting 500GB HD(data storage) and 80gb SSD(bootup disk).

How to optimally use the OptiBay

What are people's opinions about which drive, SSD and HDD, to put in the OptiBay, and which drive to leave in the regular place? Better to have SSD in the OptiBay because of better connection?

Also, what are the most important things to put on the SSD? Make it the startup disk (is this possible if it's in the location of the optical drive?)? Put the Applications Folder on it? Anything else that's critical for making the computer run faster?

Thanks!

I'll usually place the SSD in the optical bay. Because there's no moving parts in the SSD hence I do not have to worry if the SSD falls off or something.

I boot up from my ssd that is connected to the optical bay's sata port. As for my harddisk, it acts like a storage for my songs and files.

What's really cool about it is that one only needs a relatively small SSD if one has a second hard drive in the same computer. 64 GB should be plenty. This way one can buy higher quality and faster SSD. Do you agree? Seems like such a waste of money to buy e.g. a 500 GB SSD instead of the main drive (for those who leave the optical drive in).

im wondering, whats the point of having SSD if your stuff on HDD is going to be crippled by the HDD speed?

Itunes files, some rarely ran apps etc can be placed in the HDD, they play no significant impact on speed.

It's all about managing the files.
IMO there's no need for a high capacity SSD. The real world performance gap between a SSD and HDD opening up a app isn't that really significant, yet I suppose.

I haven't seen anyone ask this yet, so here I go. Will said bays work in a early 2008 MBP? I notice that everyone is talking about UMBP. I was thinking of getting a ExpressCard SSD for my torrent downloads, but this is an interesting idea. More storage capacity and minimal change in power usage make this look like a better option.

Sadly, since I have AppleCare, this will have to wait until it expires not going to take change of voiding $200+ warrenty just to get more storage).

I think the idea is to store files on the HDD, and store applications on the SSD? For example, have iPhoto on the SSD, but the Pictures folder on the HDD? I'm not sure how much having to read the pictures from the HDD slows down things though. I'm guessing not that much? Also, how do I tell the computer where what is stored?

Put your photos in your any of your favourite/desired location.

Before importing them, head to iphoto -> preferences -> advanced -> uncheck import to my library.

You can do this to itunes as well.
With this settings imported files will not be copied to your Pictures Folder.

Hope this helps.

do you guys know if the chinese branded optibays are just as good as the 42 and 120 dollar bays?

Ok, I've got the Newmodeus for a MBP 13". (it's the right one)

I've read that there's some mod you need to do to it. It looks pretty much straight forward but I'd rather not totally F**K everything up if I can avoid it.

Anyone want to help me out here?

BTW( I've been using the SATA cable HD/DVD mod swap but decided to clean things up so I know that part of it. I just need to know what part of the case needs trimming, if any)

do not modify it,

just screw the 1 screw in it, and a small peice of double sided tape on the top to make sure its not going to move around.

i would not modify the newmodeus adapter at all.

hope this helps, i can give you pictures on my install if you like, bugout already posted some great ones in this thread.

Great! Thanks.

Didn't sound like much fun

It seems like a well made item. If it fits ok i'm glad I bought it.

Funny though, even at around $50 it's a bit expensive (forget the Optibay)
