The tape is only there for peace of mind, but is not necessary

On the stock DVD drive there is a small black bracket attached by 2 screws to the rear of the drive. This is one of the points where the drive is secured to the body of the laptop
You can take this off the DVD drive and put it on the back of the caddy and screw it down to keep it in place

This pic shows where to attach the bracket

It really is a very straightforward process

I have one that I haven't tried to install yet

As regards to the aforementioned faceplate, it looks like he removed the faceplate (as you can see from the picture, and then flipped it over.

Isn't that right?

Also I noticed that the speaker is not there (at least there's one on the MBP 13)

Can't you fit that in?

details-we need details :D

note: this newest model looks a bit nicer inside (cleaned up) or maybe it's just my imagination; (it certainly is an improvement in other ways)

The speaker is probably under the optical bay recess, I dont remember seeing it

does this fit in the 13" uMBP?

I read the whole thread and unless I missed it, I do not think anyone answered....but maybe I read too fast.

If I had to take a wild guess I'd say yes.

I mean - does the MBP 13" read the same size DVDs than the 15 and 17" versions? Well, yes it does! So chances that the DVD drive - which is an industry standard 9.5mm drive - is exactly the same in those machines is very high.

i didnt think the 17" used 9.5mm drives, i thought they were 12.5mm.. unless they changed it in the newer machines..

9.5mm drives arent THAT standard, they arent used in all machines - the 12.5mm are much cheaper and the budget companies tend to use them alot more. but please, correct me if i am wrong - i havent researched this much.

regardless, as my optical drive is dead i will most likely be purchasing one of these EBay el-cheapo drive caddy things :D

The original opitbay fits all the models, so its safe to assume the newmodus one as well

Thanks all

I am thinking of getting an 80GB boot and regularly used apps on SSD and data nad less frequently used apps on my internal 250GB which I will move to the optibay. I have used the DVD burner once on this thing so I am not going to miss it.

Once the SSD is in stock I guess I will pick one up and post pics.

Yes please do. I am waiting for the optibay adapter, and then probably more waiting until I can get my hands on the SSD over here.

Spare yourself the hassle, This one will work 100%.

thats a bit out of my price range, and postage will be WAY to much..

the ebay one (here) should do the job, i dont see why it wont.. do we have any confirmation on it working on an old 15" MBP>?

no there not, unibody's have a slimmer drive in them

slimmer then 9.5mm? i didnt know there was such a thing!!

$42 is out of your price range but $25 is not? Hmmm... Ok then!

As for postage, it's very reasonable. I just ordered one of these things, and shipping to Thailand is $8.50. That's downright cheap, IMO, considering that Thailand is pretty much exactly halfway around the world.

me neither... all the newmodeus are either 9.5mm or 12.7mm.

there are a number of considerations here that are effecting my decision.
1. i am a uni student
2. the exchange rate isnt that good
3. i am in australia, even more half way around the world then you are
4. im a uni student ;)

thats decent, but a bit too much. $60Aus (or there abouts) isnt worth it to me. i want this to be a non-costly solution.

all optical drives are either that size too! so if it fits into a 9.7mm drive, then it will fit in all MBPs.

the ebay one says its has the 9.7mm "dimensions", i have already bought it! i sure hope that it fits haha. i shall post my results :)

they are 9.5mm...i got confused when i was posting.

i was trying to say 12.5mm enclosures wont work because it wont sit in the cavity without putting pressure on the ribbon junction to the board.

the newmodeus.com enclosure is perfect and works awsome.

Oh, well then, nuff said. I was a student once. I remember modding my 486 to the very max. Standing in a one hour line in a shop with garbage service to save $10. Oh yes. The good old days :)

Student: More time than money
Working: More money than time
Kids: Neither! :D

Wow guys he goes out of his way to show us something he did and is proud of and you dog him for doing it!! It is just refreshing to know that people still have the balls to do these kinds of things!!

Keep up the good work!

(in response to the first couple of comments) :)

good luck.

Let us know how it works out. I've been waiting for someone with a 13" MBP to do the mod. I'd like to install a 80gb X-25 SSD boot drive in the Newmodeus adapter (or the eBay adapter ordered by DoFoT9) and leave my 320 gb in the stock location for my iTunes and iPhoto files.

I purchased that same one a few days ago, im waiting for it to arrive. I will post my results when i install it :) what is your mac?

13inch MBP.

I am planning on doing the ssd, HD combo but I think I am going to put a 500gb hd in the optibay and an 80gb intel ssd in the normal spot.

ok great idea, i have a 500GB currently installed, for the mean time ill be putting a 120GB HD into the optical drive until we figure out how to put two partitions onto a RAID0 to allow an increase in read/writes for both bootcamp + OSX..

im not sure about the accessibility that there is with the newer unibodies, but i guess you will find out. im doing mine on an original CD MBP 15". :)
