Great! Thanks.

I don't want to do any mod if I can avoid it. I just thought I read something about trimming and sanding (and hacking .drilling, etc. :) )

Didn't sound like much fun

It seems like a well made item. If it fits ok i'm glad I bought it.

Funny though, even at around $50 it's a bit expensive (forget the Optibay)

yep, the optibay is a rip off....just huge markup on a 10-15$ item.

there support sucks also, shipping is slow and expensive.

hi, I'm interested in one of those ready-made cables, would you ship to Italy? I can pay via paypal.
thanks

So did you guys (SSD+HDD ones ;)) sort the "start up issue" ?

- to start your SSD automatically, when it sits in opti bay.
- and does your HDD (in it's rightful place) spin down when not accessed?

any response to the cheap chinese optibays or the dell/toshiba bays in ebay thatll work with the unibodys?

Start up your macbook as usual on your HDD -> go under system preference -> startup disk -> change to your SSD.

Restart.

Once you restart you shld boot from your SSD.

In your SSD go under energy saver preference -> put hdds to sleep when possible.

that's all.

how much faster would a RAID 0 setup with 2 HDD be compared to one intel SSD? read/write?

thanks!

Not. RAID 0 with hard drives increases your max transfer rate, but doesnt do very much for the random read/write speed which is where SSDs blow HDs clear out of the water. That's because small random read write is limited by seek time, not transfer rate, and seek time doesn't improve with a RAID 0.

RAID 0 with SSDs is better, you do gain in small random read / write as well. Perhaps because seek is very close to zero on SSDs. Not sure, but tests show significantly faster small random read/write on RAIDed SSDs.

the fact that there are no moving parts tends to make the seek time very low :p SSD is good for random read.writes such as booting up, opening programs quickly etc. in RAID when compared to HDD's though they are just about the same if not worse, so hardly worth it (both for price and storage size!)

Call me crazy, but on my nearly $4k laptop I'll take option 2.
Option 2 is also much smarter because electrical tape and heat are not a good mixture. Anyone ever leave a roll of electrical tape out in their hot garage, or in the car, or, say, get into the dashboard to do any car audio work and deal with this stuff? Goop-city. The OP is asking for a MESS inside his MBP after a while. The adhesive on that tape is going to be transferring everywhere it touches. Take Option 2, everyone. You will be much happier you spent the tiny extra amount in the long run.

Nice try....the laptop especially in that particular area will not get that hot...and i have run this in 25+ degree sunny weather at 55-60c while in mexico for over 6 months and i have removed it with very very little residue.

i researched and tested this well before i decided to offer the idea to others.

Spare yourself the hassle, This one will work 100%.

How does it fit when the picture shows a Dell with a "pop out" CD Drive slot? Has anyone personally tried it?

Optical drive out and Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy in.

I, amongst many others, did it personally. Did you even search these forums for the Newmodeus Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy?

I know it was mentioned before in this thread (and a dozen or so others), but I was just trying to be nice to DoFoT9 as he/she obviously doesn't look before he/she posts.

he, and why are you blaming me for it?? i never asked for a link.. i only quoted that one because it is cheap and will get the job done.

The faceplate must be removed in order to fit the newmodus caddy into the MBP
It is held in by 2 screws, too easy
Once removed, the caddy drops in, it doesnt slide in like in the Dell

Here are some of my pics

Smacky,

Does the newmodeus adapter come with any screws? Or does the ones you took out from the superdrive fit in any of the slots?

I noticed that you put some electrical tape to secure it down.

I have one that I haven't tried to install yet

As regards to the aforementioned faceplate, it looks like he removed the faceplate (as you can see from the picture, and then flipped it over.

Isn't that right?

Also I noticed that the speaker is not there (at least there's one on the MBP 13)

Can't you fit that in?

details-we need details :D

note: this newest model looks a bit nicer inside (cleaned up) or maybe it's just my imagination; (it certainly is an improvement in other ways)

Nevermind. I just received mine in the mail (literally a minute ago). I don't have the faceplate that you are talking about. And mine did come with some screws.

actually...you do

i can see it in the picture...you have to remove it.
