The Griffin Video Display Converter works flawlessly. The only thing you need to do to get the audio set-up is system preferences>Sound>Output>(Your TV Model Here). It's got great picture, great audio!! Not one complaint so far. :D

Just need to find me an HDMI switcher so i can plug my Xbox 360 and Macbook into the tv and when im ready to use one i can switch it over instead of constantly plugging and unplugging these dag gone cables... lol :apple:

Any Recommendations on HDMI switcher for under $100??

I got my MDP to HDMI cord but I can't test it out since my MBP is getting repaired

this is frustrating!!! I don't see what's wrong with my set up! If video is working fine, howcome audio isn't?!?!!

Edit:
Got it to work after changing the sound output preference in Plex, then all of a sudden audio works in VLC, and youtube ETC

WHY? What piece of hardware is at fault here? Why does it only work sometimes?? Doesn't make sense.

I've used the USB+mdp to hdmi on pre april mbps and it works great with no hassles. Just pick USB audio out and enjoy.

I bought the wire adapter as well, but it is not working for me. The adapter I had before was the simple MDP to HDMI and when plugged into my television was automatically detected and made visible on the TV. Now with this new wire from Monoprice including the USB my television says, "invalid format." Do you know why this might be or how to fix?

I haven't gone through this 11 page thread for my answer and I apologize... but I have a quick question. Can you get 5.1 through the HDMI with a MBP and if so, what forms? PLII, DTS, DTSMA?

You can bitstream DD/DTS with Plex/VLC, but there is still no way of bitstreaming/decoding DTS-HD MA and TrueHD. Even if the software supported it, nobody yet knows if Apple has enabled the PAP necessary to bitstream HD audio through MDP/HDMI.

So:

SD surround audio ----> YES (AC3 audio commonly found in 1080p MKVs, and so far carried to our A/V receivers via miniToslink to Toslink)

HD/lossless surround audio ----> NO (i don't use it anyway, mostly found in bags of hurt)

Good. 1 less cable. (miniToslink to Toslink)

I can also confirm that the griffin hdmi adapter works great... the only question i have for you guys is that when i connect my mbp the resolution is off. I have tried changing it but can't get it perfect. The best I can do is have a little bit of the screen be cut off at the top and sides. This is annoying because I like to connect my mbp to the tv so I can watch movies. With this current setup, I end up missing a little bit of the movie... mainly the top bottom and sides of the picture. Does anyone know how to correct this?

So is there a cable converter for a mid (June) 2009 13" MBP with audio out through mini display to hdmi ?

or is audio through the mini-display port a new feature in macbook pro's released from April 2010?

thanks

I'm kinda of pissed right now. Got my adapter from meritline today after waiting like 2 weeks and I'm not getting my TV to show up under sound settings. Not happy at all especially since OP said it worked and it's clearly listed on the packaging AND on the website as supporting audio out.

Which one did you get again?

The NewerTech one from OWC worked for me.

I would like to know this too. Will my 2009 13" 2.26Ghz MBP support audio via mini display port??? Or only on the 2010 MBP???

Definitive answers on which cables/adapters will pass audio on 2010 MBPs?

I bought my MBP as soon as they were updated in April and got burned on two different cables/adapters that did not pass audio. I bought the mdp to hdmi cable from monoprice (before they updated to specifically state that the cable would not pass audio) and an adapter from amazon (apparently bought from one of the many sellers on the same page that does not pass audio). After striking out twice in a row, I decided to wait it out for a while before trying again.

Now that the dust has settled, can anybody say definitively which cables or adapters will pass audio (other than the griffin one or other $20+ options)?

  1. Can anybody verify which Amazon sellers of this item have the adapter that passes audio?
  2. Are there other cheap options out there that others have found to work that I might not know of?

And yes, I did read through this forum before posting. Definitely some good info on which ones DO NOT work but it was tough to gather which ones DO work.

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Mine works. I bought the one from Meritline. It passes audio and video and stops the sounds from coming from the mac speakers. I can post a photo of the actual adapter if you like.

I just bought the meritline one it is still in the mail.

There is only one that meritline offers correct? If so I am going to be very happy if I actually bought one that passes audio!

The one from meritline says directly on the bag that it comes in that it supports compressed and uncompressed audio (LPCM, and DTS Digital, DTS-HD and dolby true HD)
