can someone please answer this for me. i have a 2010 macbook pro hooked up to external speakers and an external monitor.

if i get the monoprice mini display to hdmi will i get audio on my external speakers when i play things on my external display? im confused what they mean when it says it doesnt support audio?

It means the adapter will not pass the audio through it to the HDMI device. In order to get audio you will have to use a separate audio cable hooked into your audio jack or use one of those USB audio adapters. This is from Monoprices site:
*NOTE* This product does NOT support audio for the 2010 MacBook that outputs audio through the Mini DisplayPort.

I don't think it gets more clear than that. Take their word for it. Here's the link, I stole this link from the OP of this thread:

Here's another vouch for the Fry's electronics adapter. I went to the local Fry's retail store in town and they had 5 or 6 of them on the shelf. I plopped down my $14.99 +tax and it works perfectly. I've watched about 5 hours through it and the video and audio work perfectly.

I ordered the Dr. Bott aswell, because I was expecting to be using it on the TV in the living room, however I haven't yet needed it.
I just found out that, when using Plex for watching videos, you can actually watch it in full screen while using the MacBook Pro.
When I plugged in my Dr. Bott HDMI to MDP in the TV, it doesn't show up in the sound preferences :/ But I can't be bothered to get a replacement.

For those who may want pictures:

This, in my opinion, is epic win. I love being able to watch movies, and still be able to use adium and whatnot.
I do this as well...I just don't have the 23" Samsung mirrored and it becomes the extended desktop...I drag the player (usually VLC) over to the Samsung and it frees up my MBP desktop for whatever else I want to do...:)
(i am not connected via MDP-HDMI however as my Samsung has only one HDMI input and I use that for my HDDVR, so I am using a Apple MDP to VGA adapter to the Samsung with a line output to the monitor on the "PC" input and it looks quite brilliant)...

oh yes.

I just got my MDP to HDMI adapter from Meritline and it works perfectly!

I got worried at first because the sound was coming out of the macbook but then I went to Preferences; Sound; Output and switched the sound from the speakers to SAMSUNG DLP.

I find using your TV as an extended desktop works better than mirroring because I experienced resolution problems when mirroring with a 17" MBP. When you want to play something on the TV just drag it to the right outside your screen and it will show up on your TV. You can even maximize it there and it will do it correctly. This test was done with a 2010 13" MBP.

is there a seperate thread for hdmi cables, monoprice has so much to choose from. i don't know where to begin...

Just got this adapter from OWC for my 27" iMac:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer Technology/CBLMDPHDMI/

Both the video and audio work with my 47" LG HDTV but the audio occasionally skips out for brief periods (1-2 seconds). Anybody know what the problem might be?

UPDATE: Returned the above adapter for a refund because of the audio issue mentioned above. Ordered the Griffin one everybody is raving about, and unlike the one above, it's certified by Apple to work with audio. Will report back when I try it.

I can confirm that this adapter (M05-199) from Micro Connectors DOES do audio out. I received it today, hooked everything up, played a movie saved to my hard drive with VLC (and remembered to set Audio-Out to the HDMI device), and it worked perfectly :)

iMac 27" MDP Audio Out

Hi

Just talked to Apple, and they confirm that no iMac 27" has been shiped with the modifyed Mini Display Port who supports Audio out. So don't waist you money on buying MDP to HDMI adapters. In later productions batches it will include audio out, but all iMac 27" on the marked today is produced late 2009.

The following Apple support document says otherwise:

On top of that if you read my post above you'll see that audio was working for me with the OWC adapter although it did cut out briefly every so often. If it's not supposed to work at all then how was I able to hear anything? Plus I've seen people say they been doing this successfully, with audio, on their 27 inch iMacs since as far back as last December.

In any case the Griffin video adapter, which is certified to work with audio in the Apple support document, that I ordered will arrive today and I will report on its functionality as soon as I get to try it out on my 27 inch iMac. Then this should be settled once and for all. :)

The Griffin video adapter has arrived and I can confirm that the video and audio work perfectly with my 27 inch iMac and my LG 47 inch 1080p HDTV. You just have to remember to set your TV as the sound output source in the System Preferences. The audio does not cut out at all and it sounds great!

Save yourself some money by getting this adapter from Amazon as it is much cheaper than buying it from the Apple Store.

Enjoy!

Ugh - no delete feature (or I'm missing it somewhere). Ignore the last post, because I'm a doof, and didn't scroll down far enough in the listing :p

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CK8TZ8

bought this one, audio not working. In system preferences it says that "The selected device has no output controls."

Any ideas? It's a Sanyo Vizon TV

That only means you can't control the audio from the computer. You have to use the TV remote to control the audio. But since it's showing up in the sound output control panel the audio should work.

I just posted the amazon link to the griffin one.

I tried making the TV louder with the remote control, it didn't work. Would I have to make it to max volume before I hear anything? Because when I switched it back to cable, the sound came blasting out fine...

I'm distressed because the Griffin adapter is said to work by users here so I can't find anything on Google that would help me. Would the resolution have anything to do with the sound?

I'm using it on extended desktop because when I switch it to mirrored, the resolution settings has problems.

Also, what happens or how do we know that the other adapters don't support audio? What indicator shows?

You know audio works if your TV shows up as a source in the “Sound Output” section in the “Sound Preferences” control panel.

I think you need to have it in the mirrored mode for the sound to work through your TV. Extended desktop mode is merely an extension of your Mac's desktop, therefore the Mac, or whatever speakers you have connected to it, is still the sound output source.

Yes, I know it has to be selected, I select "SANYO LCD" as the sound output and still nothing.

Also, when I do mirror mode, the TV just has white noise. Is that mean that the resolutions are incompatible?

Why does it have to be mirrored mode for sound to come through the TV? Even if I have the SANYO LCD selected as the sound output source?

Try going to the "Aspect Ratio" setting on your TV and there should be a setting called "Just Scan". Select it. Now try Mirroring Mode.

I can get the picture working, but only occasionally. Any ideas? Bad cable? It displays sometimes, and most of the time there is only white noise.

No sound whatsoever.
