I was hoping with the launch of @me.com i would be able to get a nice new email address, but it seems they have ported over even long since expired @mac.com address's. So i guess if the name i want is not available as a @mac.com it wont be available as a @me.com. :(

Don't Know how they are doing this....

well i dont know how they decide what order to change the emails, but two days ago, and yesterday, my @me.com email was always bounced back, but its working this morning

You could check by trying to add your desired name as an Alias to you current .mac email address. If it doesn't work, the name is unfortunately unavailable and probably already in use.

Think first!

If you create an alias email account, you WILL NOT be able to use it a s primary account.... EVER!

Think about it before you play around everyone!

Thats true, but you can set an alias to be your primary email in Mail and on the iPhone. Thats what I do. But it wont work in ichat or for iweb domains and other logins.

I am guessing that there will be several software updates just prior to the mobile me release.

Does anyone have any info about what will happen to the mac.com mailserver when mobileme is activated? At the moment .mac email is serviced through mail.mac.com. After 11 July, will it be serviced through mail.mobileme.com? If not, does that mean that Apple will be keeping two mail servers (ie mac.com and mobileme.com) running? If the server is changing, does that mean that emails of the original xxxx@mac.com factor will effectively become an alias of mobileme.com? If they are getting rid of the mail.mac.com mailserver does this have any implications for the long-term future of mac.com addresses?

PS Thanks for the response Mambodancer - my problem was I was trying to set up an account so I could send @me.com emails. Although originally sending an email to xxx@me.com didn't work, it does now.

since mac.com remains apple's proprietary (addon or parked) domain and it's not going anywhere, no changes has to be made whatsoever. both mail.mac.com and web.mac.com will continue to work for as long as apple.com is alive.

Just kicking in my n00b opinion (MBP owner/.mac subscriber since Penryn), but I don't like the me.com address, or the whole "MobileMe" campaign. It makes my skin crawl, actually. It's too sugary-sweet, and reeks of SoCal marketing. Dotmac is fine with me.

I just got a .mac account - been toying with the idea for a while, and the whole 'cloud' thing pushed me over. However, I specially got one now, so that I can have a .mac address - something about the @me.com that does not sit right in my mind.

My point being...

Hence thats it's called an Alias.:p

Once an alias is used, you CAN NOT use it as a primary account. This could be important for business'. If you create an email address that you really like and want to use as a primary account, you will NOT BE ABLE TO!
