Don't need to do anything...

This is probably a bit dense. But can someone who has got their me.com account working just fill out a bit of info on what they actually did. I can get my me.com email working if I set it up as a mac.com address using new account etc and using all the same info regarding mail servers as mac.com, however if I send an email to me.com it then appears in both mac.com and me.com mailboxes. Someone mentioned setting up with mail.mobileme.com as the mail server. Has anyone done this and does it work? I tried it and it doesn't work for me. Says there's no such server.

Is mobileme email going to keep using the mac.com mail servers and you just have an email address that says me.com even though the mail server is still called mac.com? Or will the previous mac.com server change to me.com, or will both be running simultaneously. Or do I just not know what the hell I'm talking about?

All I did was to send an email to name@me.com instead of name@mac.com.

The email then showed up in my dotmac inbox in the Mail.app.

You shouldn't have to do anything to set this up.

Note: I am guessing that there will be several software updates just prior to the mobile me release. We are likely to see iTunes, Quicktime, System 10.5.4 and 10.4.xx as well as an update to the Mail.app in 10.5 and 10.4. I say this because the "Add account in Mail preferences doesn't auto add for an email with an @me.com extension like it does for just about everything else. It (as of this writing, requires you to input both the incoming and outgoing mail servers which is not the case for current dotmac or even comcast accounts).

Edit:

The system prefs pane and iPhoto apps will also have to be updated to include the new mobileme badges. (Watch the Mobileme demo at Apples website and you'll see what I mean) Also, I hope Address book gets updated to include the Alphabet headers (listing for A...B...C...etc.). I expect iCall.app will also see an update too so that the stand alone apps will look a bit more like the Mobileme apps.

FWIW, I'm in the US and I just signed up for a .mac account a few minutes ago and the @me already works.....if anyone cares.... Anyone?..... Anyone?

me.com is working for me. I think I'm going to stick with mac.com though. Nostalgia, plus I'm not really warmed up to me.com yet. Still sounds cheezy.

Lifo?

Sounds like they may be going LIFO (last in [newest members] first out [first to get .me.com e-mail addresses). If that's the case, it'll be a while for me since I've been with .Mac for the entire time.

I use my own domain for my professional e-mail as well. In fact I got several different domains/addresses for different purposes which I have been using for years. One I use to sign up for accounts with, one I use for purchases, one for potential spam, one or business, etc.

I have all my addresses forward to my .mac account though, so that way I have ONE place to check ALL my addresses.

Anyways, I just checked my name @me.com and it worked. I will probably continue using .mac.

I know that Apple said people can still use .mac in addition to .me, but I wonder if they have a phase out plan. Like will .mac always work or will they phase it out in a year or two and force everyone to eventually use only .me?

Not the case, I got mine the day .mac came out and my .me is working.

Actually, as stated already, you get both .me and .mac as addresses. You can use .mac as your business address, and .me as your personal address. I'm just testing to see if my .me address works yet. Next question will be whether its possible to filter incoming emails by .me or .mac. One folder for work, another for personal.... if one chooses to use .mac and .me that way.

Wont' work as there is no .mac or .me in either email address. There is mac.com and me.com

The .mac is the web address of the service www.MAC.com

Soooo.. maybe I'm a total dolt, but...

In Entourage, I tried setting up an account for .me (with all the same settings as .mac - except where .me should go) Entourage gives an error when I check for new mail in .me. So, the .me account isn't available yet.

However, I do receive .me mail when I send to the address that will be my .me account, but through my .mac account - I think.

So, I guess one can send mail to .me and it's delivered through .mac right now. I guess at some point we will be able to set up a separate account for .me. Does this seem right?

Sorry if this is obvious or already discussed.

Thanks

edit: ok, as the above post points out, its not .mac and .me but mac.com and me.com, but you get my drift, no?

Why bother? mindspring.com is still a legitimate email address for earthlink customers that were originally mindspring customers.

And it's me.com and mac.com. Not .mac and .me.

I don't know if I like @me as much as I like .mac, but it makes sense now that it is going to be a cross platform app. I guess if it isn't well received it can be changed with the next major upgrade. I really can't think of anything better though, @me is a pretty good description for what it is going to be.

I am far more curious to find out where .mac is going though. I know that Apple has had grand plans for .mac since it was launched all of those years ago. It seems like technology had to catch up with the grand design. All in all, I am a lot happier with .mac though, it is starting to work really well as a package, I just wish it were more compatible with most cell phones, though now there is an iPhone, I don't see that happening.

I'm sure it is going to be worth the wait though, I was about to give up on .mac all together because it was hard to convince myself that I was getting $100 worth of satisfaction from it. Hopefully my patience has paid off.

I would recommend signing up now for a .mac address on a 60 day trial.

It will automatically be upgraded to me.com in a week or so and so in effect you get over a month of trial push e-mail which I think is a great idea.

Just head to mac.com click on the "log in" and then click on the register new account and make sure you click on the trial button and not the sign up one!

I just registered and my .mac address works with me.com as well.

Works perfect on all 5 accounts in my .mac family pack only after I created new aliases for each to go better with the @me.com address. Think creating the aliases speeded up the process.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Is anyone else all of a sudden having issues with the iPhone not downloading the .mac email inbox properly? There is email in my .mac inbox, but all I see in inbox on iPhone is either a weird "blank message" I can't open or the "Loading More Messages" message which if I click does nothing. This behavior started all of a sudden since my .me addy started to work.

I just reactivated my account i had 5 years ago when i first came aboard .mac
i just prefer having username@mac.com over username@me.com. from what i was told anyone who signs up after mobileme rolls out wont have the choice of getting username@mac.com and only be able to get @me.com names. All five in my family pack are working great and also able to send to username@me.com. now if i could just figure out how to sync my contacts from my contacts app

The 10.5.4 system update will easily take care of all that until the whole app requires a major overhaul! I hope you do remember how the time machine menu bar icon and ical fixes among many others were updated by 10.5.2/3
