We will get a 64GB iPhone this year?

We have had more information leaked about the upcoming 4G iPhone then any Apple device in history, but yet I STILL have not seen anything even as a credible rumor about the CAPACITY of the device. I wonder why this has not been leaked anywhere.

I was REALLY hoping for a 64GB iPhone this month, but given the fact that there are no rumors / leaks whatsoever about a 64GB phone, I now find this very doubtful. I assume they will still be at 16GB / 32GB capacities only.

Thoughts?

Tony

Since 64GB chips are not yet cost effective, and the iPhone doesn't have room for two 32GB chips. I doubt we will see one this year.

My opinion as to why we have not seen a 64 GB model leaked is for 2 reasons

1. The 64GB model will be next years upgrade

2. Apple does nit have to test capacity for a device.

Just my opinion

Agreed on both points. But in the past, what kind of sources did we have pointing to larger capacities? The same that we have this year; reports from the NAND manufacturers that they have the chips.

However, this year is different in that NAND prices didn't drop like they did in the past.

So while possible, I'm going to say it's unlikely. I'd say 70/30 chances w/ 70% being that it's not happening. And if it does, the price will be higher.

I think we haven't seen the leak for a 64gb iPhone for the same reason we haven't seen the leak for flash support on the iPhone...it doesn't exist.

I'm definitely inclined to agree with you, even though I would love for there to be a 64gb version. Just a question for those with more experience in such matters: when field testing the devices, would Apple test the entire spectrum (8gb, 16gb, 32gb, etc) or just the minimum capacity version- or even a random selection?

I'm hoping we'll be prooved wrong and we'll see one. Hopefully since the phone is flat they can fit 2 chips in it.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but it looks like no new iPhone for me this year. I'm waiting for 64GB.

I do wish they'd offer a higher price model for those who want higher capacity. I know Apple is dying to get rid of the iPod Classic, and the ony way they can do that is to release a 128GB Touch in September. That may happen, and hopefully it's possible that they will uncharacteristically also release a 64GB iPhone in September at the same time at a higher price point. I think that's possible, since that it is also uncharacteristic the Apple would not double capacity SOMETIME this year since they've done it eery year over the past few.

I'm just hoping.....

32GB is by far the most storage of any cell phone device has on the market.

What's the highest an Android phone ships with 4GB? 8GB?

As other posters have stated, 64GB for one iphone slot is very expensive at this point.

We will see it in the 2011 iPhone model but no way in the 2010 model.

And the ipod touch as 64GB cause it has two slots (one of the iphone slots is already used up for the cellular GSM chips)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't we ONLY seen a 16Gb G4 iPhone? The rest all haven't had their capacity listed. It would be a bad move by Apple to not up the capacity for 2 years in a row, too. They should still over a 64Gb version, even if that means upping the price point to $399 with a new contract ... they could still over 16Gb $199, 32Gb $299 and then 64Gb $399.

Not sure how the phone being flat helps. It's 33% thinner.

Also, have you looked at the PCB and the size of NAND chips? The PCB is exactly the width of the NAND chip and about 3x as long. You still have to fit several power amps, radio chips, the SOC, etc... I don't see any way of getting more than one chip on there.

It's not uncharacteristic, they did this with the original iPhone. The 16GB was released in February. So I'd say that they won't release one @ launch, but we might very well see one before Christmas.

If they skip an increase this year, it won't be 2 years in a row. The 32GB was introduced w/ the 3Gs.

If the pattern were to continue, this launch would not increase storage.

1st Gen - 4GB & 8GB...16GB released later (increase)
2nd Gen - 8GB & 16GB (no increase)
3rd Gen - 16GB & 32GB (increase)
4th Gen - 16GB & 32GB (no increase) ????

Intel and Samsung both have announced technologies to shrink the size of NAND chips by 15/20%

I guess it would just be how soon it makes it to market.

I want 64gb or I may not upgrade.

No, that is way too techy for me. I was just hopin' I'd be wrong!

15-20% isn't enough. It would need to be 50%. But in all the press I've read, the process allows higher density, but I've not seen them state that they actually sized down the chips.

I hope I'm wrong as well.

+1, if there is no upgrade to 64Gb ... I may not either.

1) No 4G
2) No capacity increase
3) No (important) software updates that ONLY will run on G4 iPhone

Basically, I really have NO reason to update other than my contract is up in 7 months, but I'll just renew and save the upgrade.

It is a new iPhone, and since Jobs said we won't be disappointed, maybe they developed a way to fit 2 chips in the phone? I hope so :)

They don't need two chips. Just one. Everyone keeps saying cost will prevent 64GB but some are clearly forgetting the the phone is subsidized and the real cost to carriers for the handsets are $5-600 and up.

Can Apple put Toshiba or Samsung sourced 64GB NAND in a $600 handset? I'm sure they can.

Some people in other threads are saying that the price is high because the manufactures have few chips, maybe Apple has bought them all?

I do think there will be a 64GB iPhone.

Yes, but ALL Android phone have microSD slots that can possibly increase capacity ANOTHER 32GB, so their capacity is greater than a 32GB iPhone. Obviously, you'd have to pay more money, but I'd love to have the OPTION to pay more money for more capacity, which Apple is (probably) not going to give to me.

If I recall there have been no leaks for any storage on the iphone.

We HAVE seen a 16GB leaked 4G phone. Which means if there is a 64GB phone, there would have to be 3 tiers of 4G phones which Apple has never done upon initial release of a new model.

Tony

16GB is huge for a phone right now. Most phones start out with 8-16GB. 32GB is excellent for a phone.

Read my response above. The iPhone has no capacity for an external storage microSD card, which can be as large as 32GB PLUS what you get in the phone), so it HAS to have more internal storage to compete. There are other phone with 16GB internal PLUS 32GB microSD, so they have a potential of 48GB storage in the phone at once, whereas the iPhone tops out at 32GB. Heck, if you carry extra microSD cards on you (not difficult to do), the non-iPhones can be considered to have a LOT more than even that.

If there isn't a 64gb iPhone, hopefull apple will have iTunes stream your library OTA.
