We will get a 64GB iPhone this year?

AFAIK, Toshiba is the only one that has confirmed having a 64GB chip.

Alright, here you go.
Samsung: http://www.iphonealley.com/current/samsung-announces-64gb-flash-chip-ready-for-market
SanDisk: http://www.sandisk.com/about-sandisk/press-room/press-releases/2010/2010-02-15-sandisk-doubles-storage-capacity-for-mobile-phones-and-portable-devices-with-introduction-of-64gb-inand-

To your credit, Toshiba was the first. Toshiba unveiled it in December, Samsung in January, and SanDisk in February

Thanks.

Find a price on any of these? Curious compared to last years cost of a 32GB chip @ launch.

I'd probably pay $400 for a subsidized 128GB iPhone. Maybe even $500. I have about 100GB of itunes library and keep maybe 8GB of apps/podcasts/videos on my current 16GB 3G. My current 80GB iPod frustrates me, who knows what I might want to listen to on any given day! ;) A 128GB iPhone would be a perfect "convergence" device for me. (Especially if the camera is decent)

Keep dreaming. At this point we'll be lucky to get a 64GB model. 128GB is out of the question (based on what we know about the hardware and Apple's history of releases and hardware builds.)

Yeah that would be nice, but I agree with Geckotek. My prediction is top of line model this summer 64gb for $399 (new contract price). Then, in summer of 2011, unchanged design and body, maybe a few revisions but 128gb for $399 and 64gb for $299. We're still waiting for that technology though (128), and when it comes it'll be very expensive.

I'm well aware we'll be lucky to get a 64GB model at $299 subsidized, I'm just pointing out what the market may support. (Or me, at least)

Not necessarily. iPhone 4 could have things that the 3GS can't or simple wont be able to do on 4.0. You know how Apple does things like that.

This is true, however what I'm thinking is that new features would be hardware related similar to the way the 3GS has a compass and the 3G does now. However, both of those phones can run the other aspects of OS 3.0 like Copy Paste and what not. The 3GS can multitask and so will the new phone whereas the 3GS cannot make video calls and the new phone can.

The 3GS runs every aspect of OS 4.0 whereas the 3G does not.

That is flat-out wrong.
Steve jobs said at the 4.0 preview, "the 3GS runs most aspects of 4.0, whereas the 3G will run many things."
Not his exact quote [since I don't want to go and watch the keynote again], but that is what he said.

If you skip ahead to 58:30 Steve says that the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd gen "will support everything you've seen today."

I wouldn't rule out iPhone HD only features in OS 4.0 like the 3GS has in 3.0 compared to the 3G( ie: compass and voice control).

Apple has to make the iPhone from components that are currently available on the market and which they can purchase about 20 million of over the next year. As far as I know, the only 64 GB NAND flash memory chip currently announced is Toshiba's -- and they announced less than two weeks ago that mass production would begin "this summer." Does that sound like they have a couple of million lying around? Besides, the price of such a chip is likely to be too high to satisfy your price requirement.

If such a chip is not available or is too expensive, the only way to double capacity may be to add a second memory chip.

Your assessment to the issue is definitely spot on.

But now I feel a bit depressed and disappointed. The only thing I'm looking forward to now is the better power management of the SoC partnered with the bigger battery. Every thing else is just the OS4 which the 3GS will be getting as well. Better sensor, not much difference I reckon. Front facing cam - will probably be using once a year.

His assessment isn't spot on. In Toshiba's press release, they stated mass production of the 64GB NAND would start by March at the latest. Toshiba isn't starting production "this summer", they began production two months ago at least. Then there is Samsung who probably has started production of 64GB NAND as well by now.

Yeah, everything you've seen at the preview event. They're obviously not going to show things that are exclusive to a phone that hasn't been announced.

Just watched it, and you're still wrong. He never said they will run everything seen today. He said they will run "pretty much everything."
Watch it from 58:50, right after saying the developer preview will be available at developer.apple.com.

What is your problem? He did say that, listen harder.

Obviously the older models will not have the new features and will not run that software, the iPhone 3GS will run almost all, with of course the exception of new hardware. Duh. Anyway the point is I believe the iPhone 3GS will be the low end model similar to the iPhone 3G now.

And? You're original statement was that the 3GS will run every aspect of 4.0. You were wrong. Get over it.

I think the 3GS will only be the low-end if there is no 16GB 4th gen, the redundancy wouldn't make sense. Kinda like when they stopped making the 1st gen when the 3G came out.

so make a removable battery!! you can sugar-coat more colors on the phone but can't design a replaceable battery compartment??

By sealing in the battery, you can have a larger battery since you won't be wasting space with the battery compartment frame.

Besides, it's not very hard to have an external battery pack, and these will likely work with future iPhones as well.

Carrying around a spare batt and an ext battery pack are equally cumbersome to me, but the Ext battery pack is easier to charge independently and I can have a larger battery sealed in my phone, so that option is better.
