If you read the transcript again, SJ makes it clear that they won't be giving out free bumpers - instead, it will be a choice of case sourced from other sources.

Get off your high horse, if you don't except the refund apple won't know you trying to save their company, and a free $30, why would you say no, just think of it as a late price cut to the phone or the bumper
I probably won't get a refund either. I was fine paying the $30 a few weeks ago so why should I want it back now? I might get a free case though depending on what they look like. If I don't like them, I'll buy one somewhere else. I'm fine paying for a case elsewhere.

Even if you aren't having problems, why not just take what Apple's giving you? I already have a case, although I never had any antenna problems, but I figure hey, a free bumper. Why not?
Apple isn't going to lose much by giving them away. They can only cost a few cents max.

It's the principle of the thing and the message it sends.
Apple isn't discounting the iPhone due to competitive pressures. Apple isn't offering a coupon as part of a promotion. Apple isn't offering a free case for taking a survey.
Apple is offering a free Bumper for the iPhone as a forced apology for something they didn't do wrong.
That's why I do not want and will not accept a $29.00 credit to my Apple ID.

listen BJ...I 'thanked' Apple when I bought the phone. Apple should be thanking us (the customer) for our patience since they decided to take almost a month to address this issue and now only offer a mere bandaid to cover up a huge oversight. True - the iPhone 4 is amazing. But it could cook me a steak dinner and give me a dry HJ before bed...and I'd still hate it if it couldn't reliably make/receive calls. I'll take the rinkydink $29 stocking-stuffer refund that cost 14.5% of the total cost of the phone and be on my way. Good day to you sir.

The site (and the press conference) stated that one of the options would be a Bumper, but it's going to be driven by stock ultimately.

I dont want a bumper so I'm thinking about going buy one now and then get my refund for it and then just buy a much better case at probably the same price or just a few dollars more.
I think I read that we can't get the free bumpers until the end of next week so my refund should still be good if I do buy one today. I just gotta find one now.

After getting my free bumper in today, I can't believe ANYONE would pay $30 dollars for it. I really can't. It just screams, bend me over and give it to me hard with no lube. Pretty sad Apple would charge that much for a piece of rubber and plastic.
